The time has come, my friends. The full soundtracks have finally been revealed for each game. Now it's time for us to choose sides! In this blog, I'm going to copy and paste both full soundtracks, and highlight all the songs I look forward to playing in bold letters. I'll probably even leave comments about some of my favorites. Then, after going through each list, I'm going to tally up the total number of songs I want to play for each game, and determine which game has... THE ULTIMATE SOUNDTRACK.

I encourage you guys to participate and follow by my example if you choose. Either way, I'm interested in what everyone's thoughts are on the two soundtracks.

Just to clarify, there's going to be plenty of songs here I don't know, or think I don't know, maybe even by bands I like. I'm not going to look any up and listen to them for the sake of this blog. So I won't really know about all of the songs until after I get my hands on both games and play each of them thoroughly. Maybe later in the year I'll make an update and see if my initial choice prevailed overall. Until then, let the battle begin!

*** For the sake of encouraging you guys to participate, I'm just going to post the full soundtracks by themselves, and then my reply will feature my picks. That way you can copy and paste and not have to make changes to my choices or remove my comments.  ***

To be honest with you, my interest in these music games is on the decline too. I get excited about them when they reveal their soundtracks, but it's getting to the point where I quickly grow bored with the gameplay, regardless of the songs. I'm feeling kind of burn out. I thought The Beatles was a nice change of pace, though. Sure, it wasn't drastically different by any account, but I really loved the presentation of it all.

I'm gonna rent Guitar Hero because that's all I know.
I am AFRAID to get Rock Band for fear of getting hooked again and spending 100 bucks on DLC.

Might as well end it with Warriors of Rock.

Logic is flawed. Two more songs on GH disc is not better than a library of 2,000 songs on RB.

I guess I'm just saying that this is a moot point. Rock Band is going to have the better overall soundtrack regardless. Granted you have to pay extra for most of Rock Band's expanded library, but still. I'm personally already invested, so it makes a billion times more sense to go for Rock Band regardless of what the on disc songs are.

Guitar Hero has Soundgarden, Megadeth, a lot of Rush, Sabbath (way better than solo Ozzy in general, and especially better than Crazy Train), and has a story mode.

Rock Band 3, meanwhile, doesn't have much that interests me. Also, the fact that they're going in more realistic direction, and adding keyboards, just seems like a way to sell more expensive controllers to me. Guitar Hero, meanwhile, let's you play as Gannon. Or the non-copy-right-infringing version, anyway.

@stringbacon: Rock Band 3 has John Lennon. Thus, Guitar Hero wins.

Yes, I just equated Mr. Lennon to Nickelback. Feel free to hate on me, Lennon fans.

Also, I wish people would stop all the Nickelback hating. No, I'm not defending them, as I'm not a fan of them, but the inclusion of one song in Guitar Hero (and historically, these games never force you to play every last song in the game) does not instantly make it bad. Plus, so far as Nickelback songs go, that one isn't that bad.

@MooseyMcMan: You're saying the inclusion of one John Lennon song makes Rock Band 3 bad, and yet the inclusion of one Nickleback song does not make GH: Warriors of Rock bad? I agree with the latter part, but I'm a pretty big fan of The Beatles, and I think it's ridiculous to count out RB3 just because of one song you dislike. Anyway, dude, you're out of your mind.

I'm going to disagree for one reason. Dude... downloadable songs are ridiculously overpriced, so that's what makes the on-disc selections important. You're getting a lot more songs for way cheaper. Plus, you know, a whole new updated game to boot. I just said "to boot". I hope I never say that again.

Honestly, I feel a lot of regret over the RB DLC I've purchased. I end up spending money for songs I practically never play. On the other hand, I just ended up getting Rock Band 1 and the AC/DC Live: Rock Band track pack for $10 combined, which is like 60-70 songs for $10. If I was buying DLC, I could have only got 5 songs for that price, and that really makes me cringe.

@TheGreatGuero: Wait, are you saying that on-disc setlists are more important than downloadable songs? Because I think I'm going to have to really disagree.

As I said earlier:

I guess I'm just saying that this is a moot point. Rock Band is going to have the better overall soundtrack regardless. Granted you have to pay extra for most of Rock Band's expanded library, but still. I'm personally already invested, so it makes a billion times more sense to go for Rock Band regardless of what the on disc songs are.

Obviously not everyone has a ton of DLC like you or I. I still think that the existence and sheer size of the Rock Band music store is the biggest differentiator between RB and GH though. They already have so much on there and still no end is in sight. I mean seriously, it's nutty god damn bananas how much music (spanning many genres) they have in that store. Sure $2 per track seems like a lot, but when you think about it, it's about right. Songs on itunes are 99 cents and require very little to be put up for sale. RB tracks on the other hand require hours and hours of time per track to put together.

I've kinda lost the point of my whole post.... I really don't know what to write...

I guess my point is just that in my eyes, the RB Music Store has superseded anything that comes on disc at this point. Sure there's some great songs on disc, but when I already have both albums 'Moving Pictures' and 'Ten' (+ like 300 other tracks) on my hard drive from the get go, I care a great deal less about whatever comes on disc.

I don't know if I made any sense.

@JJWeatherman:  Well, I guess we're going to have to disagree then. Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome that they've added such an expansive library across all genres with songs for people to download, but the way I see it, I'm interested in getting the games anyway, so I'd prefer if the on-disc stuff itself is great.

Part of my personal problem with Rock Band's DLC is just that the presentation of the game itself bores the heck out of me now. It just looks so plain and generic. I don't know, maybe The Beatles: Rock Band has spoiled me in that regard. I know Rock Band 3 isn't going to have Beatles-like presentations, but at least it should offer a nice change of scenery. Also, the stages themselves in Rock Band have never been anything exciting or worth even noticing, for the most part. I guess that's one thing I liked about the old GH games, and I just preferred the look of the games. On the other hand, Rock Band's rocker customization is just insanely wonderful. They need more faces and such to choose from, but at least the clothing and hair options are incredibly varied to give the limited character types plenty of life.

I don't mean to discredit the Rock Band Music Store, and at first it seemed like a dream come true, but before long it really seemed like I was just throwing money away. In total, I've probably only purchased like 12-15 DLC songs, and really, since then I've hardly touched the game. I know you're a pretty diehard player, and probably have a ridiculous library of music and lots of people to play with. But right now, I'd really like to see more in terms of game content to really keep me from growing bored with music games. My interest is dwindling, without a doubt. Oh, and I just wanted to mention that not everyone is connected online, so a lot of people still can't access things like DLC. That's another reason why I think it's important for the on-disc selections to rock.

As someone who has never kept up with music games - do they ever release "game of the year" type versions that come with more music on disc?

Well, yeah, I guess. I'm just wondering what everyone's opinion is.

@mosdl:
Not Game of the Year editions, but Rock Band releases on-disc track packs, which are a cheaper way to get more songs if you're not online to download the DLC. As far as I know, all the track packs, except the AC/DC one, consist of songs that are available as online DLC.

Only one of these games has a Dio song in it, so Rock Band 3 is my pick.

Really though, I think Rock Band is more varied while Guitar Hero is pretty much just hard rock and metal. And I like variation.

awww good to know that they are coming out with a new one. i'm done playing guitar hero and rock band games. i've been done with them for a while. i bought guitar hero 2 and i was done. the game is good just they kept on releasing a new one every year.

the songs on both of them seem good. some bands are on both just different songs. i find that to be kind of meh. soon if they keep on making song games a lot it's going to have the same bands except different songs. it's going to be like i like this band but this game has this song while this song is on there.

GH Warriors of Rock

Total: 9

Rock Band 3

Total: 20

Plus my handful of RB DLC, and both "Blue Monday" & "Burning Down the House" are confirmed as day one DLC, which is roughly +7

There's an entire Hendrix album on the Music Store too. Though I think one of the past GH games also had some Hendrix.

GH: World Tour (AKA Guitar Hero 4) had a couple Hendrix songs. The original GH had a cover of a Hendrix song but it was instrumental. I don't think I knew that there was a whole Hendrix album availble in the Rock Band Music Store, though...

Rock Band 3.

I don't own any GH games, bought World Tour and sold it because the guitar broke, got Rock Band and never regretted it. Rock Band 3 might be my last one, Rock Band has taught me how to play the drums at a high level and after being told I'm amazing so many times I've become way too interested in real drums. So Rock Band 3 might be the end.

Technically there is the whole Axis bold as love album on the store, the only song left out was the radio styled intro.

While both of these soundtracks are absolutely horrid and atrocious in almost every way, only one of them has Roundabout by Yes. Having said that, I shake my head in complete and utter disappointment as to how fast both of them started to suck in terms of track lists. Although Roundabout is delicious.

As far as the soundtrack, Guitar Hero wins for me because they have;
 The Ramones
The White Stripes
Phoenix
Muse
Interpol
The Hives
The Cure
Anberlin
AFI
Rise Against
Foreigner
Foo Fighters
Blue Oyster Cult

However, as a video game Rock Band 3 wins.   I'm sure Rock Band will get the songs from those bands on their marketplace plus more eventually.  Also the gameplay in Rock Band is better now and the fact that they're going to actually have a real guitar playable makes it better since I actually play guitar.  Maybe I won't suck as bad on hard at these game now, ha.

Both of those soundtracks need more INDIE ROCK!!!

Guitar Hero has Bad Brains and Slayer, so Guitar Hero wins

Also, given RB3's inclusion of the keyboard, the lack of any melodic death metal seems like a lost opportunity

Quite honestly, none of the Rock Band or Guitar Hero games on-disc setlists beat the original Rock Bands in terms of music. This is obviously disregarding the music store, which  makes Rock Band the winner times a million. Plus I really prefer the art style of the Rock Band games, it has so many shiny things.

ALSO THIS. SERIOUSLY.

Or at least put some more Paramore music up there, if I can't have indie music.

Guitar Hero has it hands down for me, it's just got more of my type of music (metal). Both have some pretty amazing songs though. The only real problem I'm seeing is if you buy all of the Rockband and Guitar Hero games like I do, then your seeing a lot of songs that have already been on one game making it to the other. So several of the songs on each playlist I've already played on the other game.
