Hi folks,
I need advice. There is an amazon deal on SSDs today. I didn't really engage in the topic of SSDs before. I consider buying a 128 GB SSD, and i hope to get some improvements on my gaming performance (mainly Star Craft 2). Is this a legitimate hope or misbelief?
SSD: Influence on gaming performance?
My understanding is that SSD drives only improve the loadtimes of games, the have no effect on how the game actually runs.
It improves loadtimes and also frame rate stability in games that regularly have to load data during game play, MMOs especialy and APB Reloaded as an example - something needs to bug up for me to get a framerate drop. It only happens when I get system lag due to a fault within the game, whereas people on regular HDs make easy kills for me and they still experience peoples customizations (characters, vehicles) and terrain not loading in time, but for me everything is fine.
It won't do jack for StarCraft 2, but it would make wonders as a system drive and give you a smoother, more comfortable computing experience.
SSD's dramatically increase boot, program / game loading and file opening times (especially with a fast processor). Basically, anything that involves reading data off the SSD will be fast. However, when it has loaded, there will be no difference in performance.
If you like speed and have the money to spare, you should get it because if you install your OS and software on it, it will load lightning fast.
Less pop ups too besides loading, well a bit anyways because level and texture streaming. But I don't use my SSD drive for gaming, I could, I just use it for speeding up the operating system.
You should read up a little on the Z68 motherboards and the SSD caching. In simple terms you can have a small SSD act as a cache for the data on a normal hard disk. It will effectively make everything run pretty damn fast, almost as if everything was on the SSD. It's still kind of early in it's life, but the Z68s are supporting it. The caching seems to work just as good on small SSD vs. large ones too. So anyway, if you can get a good deal on one, it could be very useful to you in the future too, should you upgrade your mobo and cpu.
Speaking from personal experience, a defragged large hard disk (where my steam library resides) doesn't really seem gimped at all compared to my SSD. I have my OS on the SSD, but when I had some games on it... I didn't really notice a difference between the hard disk. I'm not disputing what others have said, I'm just stating that for me, it was really no big deal to move my steam library to a hard disk. I didn't suffer because of it.
