I feel that some military shooters could benefit from having some kind of surrender mechanic. I don't think games like CoD would work since it is so fast paced but something like Battlefield might. Perhaps a surrender mechanic which has a 3 second delay which allows for a reduction in points on the players team which surrenders and a punishment on the enemies side if a fully surrendered opponent is killed (on an objective game mode). The main reason I would like for this feature to be implemented is because it seems really odd to be surrounded in BF3 and just go for the best kill before I inevitably die, it comes across as suicidal. I think it could be interesting to have a situation where you could cut your losses or go just go for it.

I'm open to hear holes in my theory or different approaches to the feature, I'd just like to see a reduction on pure kill or be killed strategy when the game is reflecting wars where that is not completely the case especially if the game mode has a focus not only on getting kills but taking objectives.

You should play Army of Two: The 40th Day (It's not that bad, really).

You could feign surrender, to distract / lure out the enemy, and your partner could then ambush them.

With a silenced shotgun.

In instances where a team has been beaten back and spawn trapped, it would be nice to get it over with, but there have also been times where I was able to slip past an enemy line and take over objectives that felt extremely satisfying. I feel like a surrender mechanic where a majority team vote forced a forfeit would eliminate those types of opportunities. Aside from that, how would the game judge when a team has been outmatched in order to present that option?

I'm also one of those people who hates when an entire team of people quits matches when the odds seem stacked against them. I almost always stick with a match until the end unless there is an issue with server stability or the like.

Reminds me of faking surrender or even death in Metal Gear Solid games (probably not what you're talking about though). It does sound interesting in games like first person shooters, Day Z allows that to happen but it's not really a mechanic in that case. Games like DOTA has things like denies but that's more like denying your opponent's rewards rather than cutting your losses (which ends up being the same thing in this case, I guess it's a matter of framing?)

Once a player has surrendered they will respawn (after a certain amount of time) I wasn't imagining it would be the end of the match or the equivalent of quitting and any player could surrender at any point but there would be a delay of a few seconds to prevent players surrendering instantly when under fire.

This sounds kind of abusable for denying the enemy team points. Just surrender before getting murdered. And if you can't do it whenever, what decides the flag for "surrounded"? It just seems like it would be inconsistent.

Also, I kind of don't see the point. But I don't give two shits about military shooters, so maybe there is a good reason.

@TobbRobb:There would be a delay as I said, a few seconds maybe for it to take effect so you cant just surrender instantly and deny points to an enemy mid fire fight.

This is only somewhat related to the OP, but is there actually a concept on here for games that allow you to fake surrender in games? Along with Army of Two, you've also got Hitman Absolution and I Am Alive, among a few others I'm sure, that feature such a mechanic, too. Searching for ''fake surrender'' turns up nothing, and in fact ''surrender'' only brings up a game.
