What will happen to the DS once the 3DS launches? Will games still be released for the system? Will Nintendo still manufacture the DS and DSi systems? Will we see price drops on DS games following the 3DS launch? If so I might wait to get a 3DS because since it is backwards compatible I will still buy regular DS games and not worry about them being incompatible. Hopefully Professor Layton and other cool franchises drop in price severely so I can pick them up for cheap. What are your thoughts on the matter?

There will be a few more DS games, than a shitload of ports of DS games to 3DS.

With as large of install base as the system has I could see it hanging around for a while especially when it's cheapest replacement is going to cost $250.

Things will slow down (they already kind of have) but the DS has too big of a install base to die instantly. I expect we'll see a few more significant titles for it.

Even if new games drop off for the original DS they're still so many good games in it's catalogue that theirs years worth of fun in the system.

I think it will still produce games for the youngest and oldest generations of gamers. Developers making games for the 'hardcore' gamer will all move to 3DS but there will be plenty for a few people to keep a hold of their DS.

Yeah I think Nintendo will drop it very fast and focus people's attention solely on the 3DS. It's not an iteration of the DS, it's a new system. However, I bet the DS will follow the PS2 in having a shitload of software support years after it's replacement.

A Pokemon game will have just come out for it. It'll be fine for quite a while.

And the next Layton is 3DS, along with PW vs Layton.

GBA games were still put for a couple years after the DS launched, so I can definitely see them supporting the DS for a while, although I don't exactly see the games coming out as being top tier stuff.  To be honest, the DS, though having some fun games, has been rather forgettable since Bowser's Inside Story, so I wouldn't really be disappointed if nothing came out after March.  With the exception of Golden Sun, which was a Christmas gift, I haven't bought a DS game in over two years and besides the Layton games, which are all sort of expensive, and SMT: Devil Survivor, which is impossible to find, I have nothing that I really want to play on the DS.

The Ds will be the PS2 of handhelds simply because of the sheer volume of DS systems out there being used.

@Laketown true, because I didn't say in my first sentence that I thought nintendo would continue to support the DS like they did with the GBA, bra.
