Oh wow. I'd have to say Abe's Odyssey. But I was a kid then. Nowadays, my eyes welt up, that's as far as I can go. Journey and The Walking Dead are the most recent games that have had a big emotional effect on me.

I can't think of one that did.

What's up with the "...have you cried at any games/movies/books/animes/paintings" threads lately?

It's because of The Walking Dead, I think. It got people thinking about emotional depth in games, and how they effect us, and it's spread to discussions about other artforms as well.

Jeeze, I'd forgotten about that moment. ME3 had at least a few like that.

I don't think I've ever cried for a game. I certainly don't remember doing so. But my throat did that weird closing up thing when Mordin starting singing Scientist Salarian in Mass Effect 3. I guess that's the closest example I have.

Definitely this.

I don't think I've ever cried from a video game.. But then again, I don't think I really play any of the games/genres that are known for their emotional storytelling.

Chrono Cross, the game was just beautiful in many ways and by the end of it the imagery just got to me. Also, if you could understand any of the story sometimes it was very sad!

Outcast 2, because it never saw the light of day.

Other than that there's too much shit in the real world for me to get that affected by a videogame. I liked playing the walking dead and there was some emotional resonance, but actual crying? Nah. Not even close.

I don't think I ever cried even though I tend to get really invested in games. I remember that I was really sad when Paulie died in Mafia 1 (even though everybody but me had seen this coming from the very first scene of the game cause....come on, that's how storys about the Mafia work) but I was pretty young then (too young to play the game but whatever, right?)

I'm almost sure it was the ending for Secret of Mana, I don't remember tear drops per se (I was quite young), but I still remember the ending incredibly well and I do remember it having a rather large effect on my tiny child brain.

Walking Dead is the one that probably made me cry the most, nearly 20 years later.

Never cried, but some stories in Lost Odyssey were brutal to read. Also when Sheppard is saying bye to everyone before the final mission in ME3 was touching.

I don't remember crying specifically but I was really bummed out at the end of Earthbound.

But then I started it over again and felt better.

I don't think I've ever cried at a video game... Then again, the same could be said for books and movies. Don't get me wrong, I think video games, books, and movies can all be extremely emotionally effective, I just... I dunno. There are like, maybe two movies that have ever made me cry, maybe like one book, and... I can't think of a video game. I got a little bit choked up at the end of Mass Effect 3, but that was because it was ending, not because of the ending (which was garbage). The Walking Dead kind of just made me want to go lie in bed for a while, but not actually cry.

Man, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "The Body" though? That sure did wreck me. That's probably the most emotional I've ever gotten over a piece of media.

The end to the Walking Dead and no other game really came close at all. Final Fantasy VII was the saddest before that but it wasn't remotely close. That's why I think so highly of the Walking Dead.

In Lost Odyssey just after you meet Cooke and Mack. Meeting their mom was the first time a video game ever made me cry. The Walking Dead was the only other game to make me cry.

Lost Odyssey, towards the end of Disc One. That got me.

So did the end of Republic Commando, of all fucking things, I was a bit younger then, and it was more just getting a bit choked up, but yeah, dude, Sev's a fucking hero. *salute*

In Mass Effect 3, playing as a Male Shepard, I made a choice to not cure the genophage, and because of that, I was forced to kill Mordin. I teared up when that happened.

Goddamn motherfucking King's Quest for the Sega Master System. That game is hard, and I don't mean in the tough but fair modern way. I mean in the bad design and maliciously cheap sorta way. I was maybe, i don't know, 6 years old? 7? Something in that range. Anyway, I had a game going that I was doing fairly well in. There is one screen in that game containing an enemy wizard who will freeze you if you don't have some defense item of some sort. Freeze you for an extended period of time. It looks like it's game over right there as I don't believe the game tells you the freeze is temporary. Or i don't remember. Six year old me thought I had entered a screen and been insta-killed for no reason. I threw a tantrum of some epic proportions. Many tears were shed. Controllers were thrown. IT WASN'T FAIR GODDAMNIT. D;

I expect it to be pretty common but the last sequence before the credits in Episode 5 of 'The Walking Dead'

First time I ever shed a tear, I have played games all my life and have had strong emotional responses to a few but that is the first time I cried.

Final Fantasy X or Kingdom Hearts not sure which one I finished first but it was one of them and those are probably the only two games that have caused me to shed a tear.

Probably something in Metal Gear Solid 1.

But the most vivid memory I have is the end of MGS 3.  You know, when the music swells up and he sheds a tear.  The manliest god damn tear.  It's still moving every time I see it.

As a kid, reading Breath of Fire 3's strategy guide and learning that Teepo had to be killed off made me cry. The ending of Kingdom Hearts did as well.

As for more recent cases... Shadow of the Colossus is the only one that definitely comes to mind.

..... That and possibly Demon's Souls- though I don't remember if that was actual tears, or just an overwhelming sense of contentment alongside the calmness of its good ending- that and the music and boss pictures included in the credits. (I almost never watch game credits to completion if they're skippable- Demon's Souls has pretty much been the only exception that comes to mind for that rule for me)
