Like the title would suggest, what are some of those truly special games that have the tendency to stick with you even when you aren't playing them?

Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect 2 are some examples in my opinion. Can you name a few?

Oblivion, Bioshock, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Uncharted 2 come to mind.

Unfortunately, when I hear certain songs, I get pretty vivid images brought back of leveling my Mage in WoW. Other than that probably Fallout 3, because it is maybe my favorite game of all time.

Persona 3 ... Braid ... Resonance of Fate ... Ico
I mean, kind of emotionally sticking with me, making some kind of impact, rather than just 'yeah that was a really great game' kind of sticking with me. Although all those are that too.

Persona 3, that ending left me depressed for a few days :(

Recently though, L.A. Noire's ending has stuck with me. It wasn't a very good ending, but some of the events that happen in the last few hours of the game are all kinds of fucked up.

This is just going to be a list of everyone's games of the year. That said, Far Cry 2, Bioshock, and Brutal Legend I will never forget. It's not always the great games that stick with me; it's the ones that have an unfulfilled potential to them. Halo: Reach is a fun, well-produced game but I forgot about it ten minutes after beating it. Same with the CoD series of games; because they were paragons of their genres. They came out shiny and enticing but took no risks.

Mafia II and the Assassin's Creed series are the two that first spring to mind for me. By the end of Mafia II I had grown to appreciate everything about it and was gutted. Then there was DLC and I was happy for a bit. Now... I want a Mafia III.

It varies with time.  It's been 25 years since I played InFocom's Trinity, but I still think about it when pondering old favorites.  I've had dreams about Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Unreal Tournament.  Persona 3 really moved me emotionally.   WOW took away two years of my gaming life, so I can't help but include that in such a list.  I miss it occasionally like I miss smoking cigarettes.

Definitely Assassin's Creed. I absolutely love the entire universe and story.
Mass Effect 1&2. Even though I don't like the character development in ME2, I still adore the ME universe, and I can't wait for the 3rd installment.
Oblivion. Even though I haven't played it in over a year, I remember pretty much all of the quests. I actually tried to play it the other day, but had to give up because of that.
Zelda & Mario. I grew up on these, and still remember every single game.

And while I have already forgotten parts of the game, Captain James Donnelly from L.A. Noire is still fresh in my mind. God, I loved the things he said.

New Vegas has a lot of gameplay resonance for me, same with Oblivion and Deus Ex, just thinking about the nearly endless ways to spec a character to dramatically change how you play and affect the story.

For games that just plain make me happy to think about, stuff like, Persona, Arkham Asylum, WindWaker, any story driven Valve game, as well as all four MGS games. Every core Pokemon title too, since those are the only games where, no matter where I was in life, all of my friends were playing them. I have no friends that play Call of Duty, but everyone swaps Black and White stories and why we all hate Ghestis.

Tie Fighter, Elite and the original Wing Commander: Privateer have stuck with me for decades now. Maybe because there are so few great space sims out there anymore.

I'm going with Rogue Galaxy, Valkyria Chronicles, God Hand (for its craziness), Demon's Souls, Diablo, and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Those are the games that popped into my head that I would actually be interested in playing again and have thought about recently. I'm playing Nier right now, and though I'm very early on I'm really digging the style, it might stay around too.

Mirror's Edge the way the city looks and the music is very peaceful it always put me in a better mind state especially thinking back to the first time I played it I remember it was a sunny day out in the spring that time it always stuck with me when I think back of that game.

Fallout 3 and Borderlands are my two most fond games this gen. To me, they are the pair of open world/action rpgs where I spent a year playing each when they came out. Fallout is full of war stories that only YOU could experience because of nature's randomness, a tale of a lowly level 1 wandering the wastes until his retirement at level 30, and unforgettable experience.

When I hear the A7X self titled album, I think about my time spent in Tabula Rasa.
When I hear the Killers, I'm reminded of my time spent in the Wizard101 beta.
Because the Nier OST is nearly constantly playing, I am always thinking of Nier.
When I think about how to make a game better, I think of Valkyria Chronicles.
When I listen to the Strokes, I'm reminded of my time running time trials in Mirror's Edge.

Nier, after listening to my favorite Podcast that I was a guest on and hearing the praise it got there I had to suffer through it again, then replayed it and all of a sudden the game just stuck with me for some reason.
First time through it was teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrible though.

Fallout: New Vegas, Red Dead Redemption, The Darkness, Uncharted 1 and 2. Arkham Asylum, The Witcher 1 and 2(Fucking insane difficulty is... insane! And I'm doing another playthrough! ON INSANE >_<)
those are just some of the games I could easily think of right now but there are a tooon of other games too

Mass Effect 2 resonated with me for a good while after I had finished it.  Just in how incredibly invested I felt in the universe after all was said and done and how I was already yearning for ME3.

Halo CE really stuck with me after I finished in the first time.  As a console player I had just never played anything like it.

Shenmue kind of showed me what direction games were going as far as fully realized worlds go.  I was absolutely blown away by it all.  Still a game I highly enjoy jumping back into every once in a while and it still impresses me.

Pool of Radience on the C64...that was my first "real" D&D computer game. I never want to play it again because it will only ruin the awesomeness I remember as a kid.

That and Gauntlet (original) and Golden Axe (again original)...just classics. Never want to see or play again, but classics.

The Legacy of Kain games have a really amazing story and a lot of great lines of dialogue.
Mass Effect and the Witcher are two more recent ones.

I had several nightmares with Mass Effect 2..  for some reason collectors scare the shit out of me

Other examples:

-Fallout 3, was such a memorable experience
-Portal 2 , Glados best character ever
-Half life and Half life 2, great plot love the universe they create
-Uncharted 2: No material for deep though or anything, but I have play the campaign so many times I recall all the memorable action sequences like if it was yesterday.

A game that blew me away recently and set the standard for 'sticking in my mind' was Nine Hours, Nine Doors, Nine Persons for the DS. It almost, I don't know how to put this........ 'ruined' a week of my life, I was in work and just constantly thinking about the characters and decisions you make along the way - it's a game that digs its heels into your emotions and totally doesn't let go of them.

I even read a forum topic online somewhere in which a guy said he 'wouldn't want to play it again' because the whole game was so stressful on his emotions. Having said that, I just think it's a game that's living proof for why video games can be so amazing and have now become, in my opinion, the best media platform for storytelling.

I also think Final Fantasy 7 is a contender for it's........'scene at the end of disk 1' - shall we say? Playing that as a kid really stuck in my mind and definitely will not forget that.

Final fantasy 8 stuck with me, I think mostly because it was the first "big" game that I've ever completed. Also Dragon Age: Origins which is my favorite game of all time.

The most recent in my memory is Demon's Souls.
The minimal grimness of that world really stayed with me well after I was finished with it.

Oddly it's not the great games or terrible games that stick in my head, it's the average, mediocre ones. Heavy Rain, FFXIII, Mirror's Edge are recent examples of games that have been on my mind. I don't know why.

Mostly games from back in the day, when most of me and my brothers were playing through the classical RPGs. Whenever I hear Move a Little Closer by Guano Apes, I think about the New Reno storyline in Fallout 2. No clue why, but that song and that place stuck together for me. Planescape Torment needs only its own OST. Also, because Riddell said it: Guild Wars. That game saw a lot of play and was such a cool new experience for me, I'll always remember the early days of that as some of the best gaming moment I've had.

I hate to sound like a broken record over this game, but, Demon's Souls.
