The Getaway is a great choice and mine as well.
The Most Disappointing Game Ever?

I bought a PS3 a few weeks ago, with Uncharted 2 being a big reason why. After playing through it, I really don't understand all the praise. It's not a bad game by any means, but it just felt... standard. Besides the graphics, nothing really stood out about it, and even those aren't mindblowing. It's more cinematic than most games, but not much more fun to play. After hearing so much about how great it is, I can't help being extremely disappointed with how boring the game was to me. Also really did not care for LA Noire. That was a pretty big bummer after getting hyped up by all the reviews. Again, these are not bad games, but given how much they were built up, definite disappointments.
My diagnosis is that you're not the type to get involved in a games story very much. Both of those games rely heavily on their storytelling elements and are far more successful in that respect than any other game.

I really wanted to like both LA Noire and Uncharted, but man. Just thinking about it bums me out. I've got no problems with others enjoying them, but neither game came close to living up to the hype in my mind.
EDIT: I just want to say, it's entirely possible that I'm being too hard on these games in comparison to past experiences. I've started thinking much more critically about games and design philosophy in the past few months, and it's not unlikely that if I were to go in fresh on older games with these same eyes I would find a mess of problems to complain about there as well. But I can't, so... meh.
Spore yes, but also Borderlands, ending rather than the entire game, but as bad endings go, Borderlands takes the f***ing cake.Yeah it does. That ending blew my mind with how utterly shitty and anti-climactic it was.
It's hard to think of it straight off the top of my head, but some ones that come immediately to mind are Final Fantasy XIII and Super Mario Sunshine.
Crysis 2 created a new definition for "An abomination of a sequel"I see your Crysis 2.
And raise you Fallout 3.

Not really a fair or logical comparison though is it? Crysis 2 was made directly after the first game and by the same company and team. Fallout 3 wasn't though I can definitely see why it disappointed many of the previous games' fans (including those of Wasteland).
Crysis 2 created a new definition for "An abomination of a sequel"Yeah, this and it's highly unfortunate because it does have some great aspects in it, like the soundtrack, the graphics for the most part are great (but still...), but I hate the voice acting, the characters this time around were bad, and the gameplay wasn't nearly as good as the first Crysis. I just... *cries*.
In the past with these types of threads, I've said Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but I've since replayed it and with my re-tempered expectations, I enjoyed it a lot more. As I explained in the past, I loved the first one so much that the sequel was bound to disappoint in my eyes. I wanted the stars and merely received the moon.
Alpha Protocol was a smaller disappointment since the premise seemed so promising. The games execution was problematic, though.

I've answered this question quite a few times and my answer is still Spore. With the potential of the ideas put into it, the development time put into it and perhaps most promising that it was the post-Sims brainchild of Will Wright it seemed like it could have so much going for it, then when it got here it wasn't a bad game but it wasn't anywhere near as good as it could have been.
Man this is a terrible hard predicament you put me in. If we are talking most recent dissapoint, because I really cannot think of something as "ever." I have always loved the original Paper Mario on the N64, playing it at least 20+ times to completion. I started Thousand Year Door not too long ago, and I am -loving- it just as much, if not more, then the original. However, after picking up the disgrace Super Paper Mario for the Wii, I am abhorrently dissapointed in what they did to this franchise. They took away the turn-based love, any "real" meaning to leveling up, and made going from zone to zone the most tedious venture the franchise has delivered.
I really do not understand why they did this to the franchise, and it breaks my heart. Here is to hoping the 3DS version is turn-based with the RPG goodness TTYD and original were, and not the nonsense Nintendo released on the Wii.
i guess it would be uncharted 2, i wasn't even looking forward to it, but i just got a PS3 for metal gear solid 4 (which did not disappoint even after years of building it up) but because it was so highly praised and i can't figure out why, obviously graphically its fantastic, but the basic mechanics don't feel right, shooting etc, doesn't feel good to play, its passable but not 9/10 material and i hate nathan drake's jump mechanics, he just makes a frog splash jump and then latches onto anything, just felt very frustrating, it and infamous are the games i feel like i'm waiting to press the buttons correctly rather than have control of them myself
others would be far cry 2, red dead and alan wake, dead rising; dead rising only because of the restrictions it put on you annoyed me, they were clever in retrospect because they created a game out of what i would've made which is just a beat em up, but thats all i wanted from that,
red dead is just a boring game with decent gameplay and characters and ironically the only thing i liked about it, travel, was the most boring part to some people, plus marston fucked me off, it didn't feel like going off and doing quests when the guy you're playing constantly complains his main mission is urgent yet still helps people for little or no reason,
i'd played far cry 2 before i got it, but only the editor, which really impressed me but the story was so boring and the gameplay wasn't good enough for me to give it another try, I still go back and play the editor once in a while
alan wake wasn't a disappointment because i wasn't expecting much but people had made so much of the story of the game and it was stupid, and not good stupid just not a good story and made little sense, but the gameplay and atmosphere was good enough to continue and i would like to play a sequel
assassin's creed brotherhood was actually a bit disappointing, i'm only a few hours in but its just the things i enjoyed most about the first one, the way the crazy revenge story unfolded culminating in the biggest mindfuck since the end of metal gear solid 2 aren't really present it just started off like ''yep, you're an assassin now, what want us to hold your hand? work has to be done, get going!" and then doing escort missions etc, which i didn't mind doing in the first one because of the story but here it just feels really apparent its a game
Half Life 2.
Everyone was praising the game for it's story telling and how amazing the game was just overall. I thought it was super boring, i mean the long ass boat and car sequence not to mention all the first person plat-forming. Also i never played the original so i had no idea what was going on the entire game, didn't explain anything they just expected everyone had played the original even though there was a long wait between the two games.
There was a time before I had an xbox 360, a I had not bought one yet as I felt it was an unnecessary purchase, but I was definitely interested.
I had previously put in hundreds of hours into Fable and the BIA series, and while thinking about purchasing a 360 I thought about how amazing their next gen sequels would be. Eventually thinking about these 2 gems pushed me over the edge and I jumped in.
BIA Hell's Highway controlled terribly, had weird 3rd person mechanics and a boring narrative. Fable 2 was a shot for shot remake of the first one, with better graphics but identical gameplay and terrible loading screens.
Thankfully my 360 elite bundle also came with GTA4....purchase justified!
GTA 4. After playing San Andreas, I thought the next GTA game would be amazing. All the mainstream reviews were extremely positive and yet that game is the worst game I have ever played.
Final Fantasy VIII was a pretty big disappointment for me when it was released. Lame story, annoying characters, and a battle system that was too easily exploitable.
I also remember being fairly disappointed with Chrono Cross. Probably due to the fact that I was such a fanboy of the original, but looking at it now it's not so bad.
Of recent memory I would say Metroid: Other M, Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, and Perfect Dark Zero.
Worth mentioning:
Final Fantasy XIII
Getaway
Devil May Cry 2
Star Fox: Assault
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
I don't know about "most disappointing ever", but Resistance 2 was a really hard pill to swallow. If you're going to make 64 player online gameplay, make maps to suit it at least. The Co-op was it's one redeeming factor, but even still, the missions were just boring and generic and I just expected a lot more from Insomniac.
The obvious answer is Duke Nukem Forever though.
Spore. After watching 30 minute youtube video's of what that game could have been, and what it turned out to be. Big disappointment.
Majora's Mask. I know some people loved it, but it was not at all what I wanted from a Ocarina of Time sequel. Plus you had to pay an extra $30 for that expansion pack.

I dunno man, I think Uncharted 2 has one of the most exciting and engrossing single player campaigns I've ever played. The characters all seemed really lifelike and completely fleshed out to me. I loved all of their personalities and was really enjoyed everything each character brought to the game. As far as the game play goes, I've yet to play a 3rd person action title that just handled so silky smooth. It was so easy to slip in and out of cover, run, jump, climb and control Drake. I thought the shooting mechanics were top notch also. The whole game was an enjoyable experience from start to finish, and really the only reason I could never sell my PS3. I haven't found many other games this gen that I've enjoyed as much, or feel that the devs care about as much as the Uncharted series.
