i remember that happening on the Xenosaga series way back on the PS2...
The thing I hate most in video games.
@believer258: Do you have a Dynamic Range setting on your stereo? Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and softest sounds that your stereo puts out. If you have a high range then the loud will be really loud and the quiet will be very quiet, but if you set it to low then everything will be at around the same level.
I used to have to watch all my DVDs with my remote handy because I had to turn it up every time someone talked and down any time any action happened. Since I've fiddled with my dynamic range everything is perfect.

Having to continually adjust the volume. I really hate it when cut-scenes are way quieter than gameplay. It totally kills the mood of the game when you have to turn the TV way up just to hear what the people are saying and then turn it way back down because the actual gameplay is much loader then cut-scenes. I hate playing with subtitles on, because you end up just watching the subtitles instead of the game. Messing with the sound options never fixes it either, because everything is turned all the way up by default. It's not just games either ever flip around the channels and hit that channel that's 10x louder than the last one for no reason?
agreed, which is why subtitles

Not all games have the problem but yeah it can be annoying.
The thing I hate the most though is a game where you turn down the sound a little so you still have game sounds but no music and you can listen to like a podcast or something but then a cutscene starts and it's the loudest damn thing on the planet and you can't turn that down ever unless you go to the mixer of course

Not sure how you guys don't have this problem, I have to turn the voice volume up (but realistically, turn everything else down because they're all already at 100%) in nearly every game because the dialogue's quiet and then during gameplay EVERYTHING IS MEGA LOUD EXPLOSIONS AND SOUNDS

@Video_Game_King: Damn, that is an awesome video. I really should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion, shouldn't I?
You should watch it... if you hate yourself.
By the way, that video was awesome, better than the original one.

LMFAO, well played sir (only works with that avatar)
I agree with you. I played The Darkness ( it was released in 2007) late at night, for almost a week last week, and I had to keep the volume on my Television at 12, which is a respectable volume. I had to do that because I live above the lady who supervises the Apartment complex I live in, and she goes to bed early. Even then, it was still fairly loud, although to be fair, the cutscenes were a little softer.
I've definitely encountered this problem a lot. That, and music/sound totally drowning out voices on default settings, forcing subtitles if you wish to understand anything(which I hate). Some things have multiple audio settings so that you can fix that, but not all(such as CoD). But yeah, both are pet peeves.
What is the deal with commercials, am I right? You're sitting there watching a television show, enjoying some popcorn, when it suddenly cuts to some commercial for skincare and the voice over is so loud it startles you so much that you launch your bowl of popcorn across the room. Now you're too busy cleaning up the mess you made to even pay attention to the commercial and the entire message the voice over is trying to convey is lost on you.
Wouldn't it make more sense for these commercials to try the exact opposite sort of strategy? Like they whisper really softly, "Psst, hey you. Yeah you on the sofa. Have I got a deal for you!" Forcing you to strain to hear would have you completely focused on what the voice over is trying to say! Personally, I think it's brilliant.
Wait, we're talking about video games? Oh, well in that case....

You know what I hate even more than that? The fact that washington passed the law to force advertisers to adhere to the decibel limit in each channel. Meaning however loud the show you're watching is, it is illegal for advertisers to go any louder than said show. So on top of being annoyed by how loud the commercials are, it's insult to injury to know it's illegal now and they're STILL doing it.
