I was playing a few of my Gamecube games recently and decided to drag out Starfox Assault. It was whilst I was playing the first level, trying to kill the boss by shooting specifically at at a mark on his hands, that I came to a realisation - traditional pads suck when playing a shooting game.
The Wii has ruined shooting games for me.
The wiimote is the most awkward controller I have ever used and is only good for on rails shooting games and untraditional controlled games (think warioware), as far as FPSs go, it sucks.
The 360 controller is my preferred method of playing fps games then my ps3 controller then my wii. M/K is only suitable for RTSs and MMOs (support the 360 controller better damn it! Crysis treats the analog like the left arrows making driving awful!)
I especially find this slightly weird---> what shooting games on the wii? There's metroid prime.... and then... uh... I guess if you have to COD5 on the wii... but everything else is trash.
I am talking in general terms, anything that requires aiming and shooting. So that would obviously include Metroid, but also Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Elebits, Link Crossbow Training and Battalion Wars 2. It doesn't take a lot of games to spoil you to how easy it is to use and how natural it feels. Trash is a subjective term and not relevant.
Same problem, i tried playing Killer 7 after having beaten RE4 on the Wii. Just could not do it. I could not keep myself from thinking "wow would this have had IR aiming it would have been the best game ever". The "Play on Wii" series is a small consolation though, hope that some of the GC classics get remade with it.
I'm avoiding RE5 for this reason.
Well, I am still not a fan of the Wii's FPS controls, with the exception of the two RE games out, though both of them are not technically "FPS's". Medal of Honors 2 was an OK game that was fun for the few times I played it, and Metroid 3 controlled very well, though I never finished the whole game, but I still mainly play FPS on gamepads anyway so the difference is neglible.
I am hoping to see if the Conduit can change my mind, and I will reserve my opinions of Wii shooters until that game comes out, as it is said to be "the" Wii FPS. As of now though, I prefer my gamepad to the Wiimote. Maybe the new WiiMotionPlus will make stuff better, but any games using that feature will take awhile to come out from now.
I really don't like playing shooting games with the wii remote. You have to keep your hand somewhere that the sensor and pick them up and that gets tiring. I remember when I played Call of Duty 3 on the Wii and there were times when my guy would just start aiming straight up into the air and start spinning around if I tried to rest my hands on my lap for a few seconds. In games where you only have to aim occasionally then the Wii Remote isn't that bad. I just won't be playing anymore FPS on the Wii.

Try getting in a better position and make sure sensor bar is at a centered angle.
"The Wiimote actually was designed as a mouse, which is why FPS work so well in the console."
Not really. The fact that the wiimote has to have an aiming zone and a turning zone sort of ruins all competition.
Can anyone really imagine halo 3 with a wii controller? a game where jumping and complex movement counts boodles?
Only when doing something on rails do I see the benefits of the Wiimote. Otherwise, it just feels clumsy.

The Wii controls on RE4 are amazingly good. Really makes it hard to enjoy the RE5 demo going back to normal pads.
"MKHavoc said:Agreed on the sit down position, I feel really natural playing with my hands a couple of feet apart. As for the shooting games (and some others) I like the immersion of standing up and kind of moving my feet. Being directly in front and a couple of metres away from the television (big screen) really feels right and definitely no issue with the sensor bar. Not being the type that plays for hours on end, I have no problem with fatigue."I really don't like playing shooting games with the wii remote. That will only make it easier to port.
I can still play them prefectly fine but it takes a short time to re-adjust to the normal controls. I prefer the Wiimote though, the controls in MP3 were godly.
