So I was just watching an episode of Good Mythical Morning on Youtube where they discuss the idea of giving yourself the chills and it got me thinking about what things I can do to induce that feeling myself. I know that often certain movie soundtracks give me the chills. Usually big orchestral stuff with great crescendo's and diminuendo's really get to me especially if I can remember the first time I heard the song. I also really love songs that start slow and build to like this massive release. For movies, things like Arrival to Earth from the Transformers soundtrack or He's a Pirate from Pirates of the Carribbean stand out. For games though, there are a few that really standout and always give me the chills when I hear them. For one, something like the Legend of Zelda theme really gets to me. And it's not even just the main theme, but most songs from Legend of Zelda. They just have such an grand feel to them that I can't help but just get the chills whenever I hear any variation of it.

And like I said, it isn't even just the main theme (although that really does give me the chills) but a lot of the off shoot music as well. Stuff like the Ballad of the Goddess from Skyward Sword is quite beautiful, even if it is a little bit quieter.

I just like really swashbuckling style music I think, and so whenever I feel like something has really adventurous tone, it really resonates with me. The Uncharted 2 soundtrack is a really good example of swashbuckling music that gives me the chills (and made the scene in which this played feel 10x more badass.) Specifically the music that starts at around 1.20 in this song. Straight goosebumps all day. And of course who could forget Metal Gear Solid. The soundtrack that can cause a person to get wobbly in their knees every time they hear it:

A good soundtrack elevates a game from being good to being great, and makes it memorable years after its original release. Part of the reason things like Zelda and MGS have endured is because of their amazing goosebump inducing music. There are a lot ways to give yourself chills, but music is a really consistent way to do so, and what better to listen to then some great soundtracks.

Is there anything, game related or otherwise, that gives you guys the chills every time you hear it?

Entire thing gives me chills from head to toe.

As for gaming Silent Hill 2 has many scenes that give me the chills but this letter and the ending credits with the song "promise" just get me every god damn time.

Almost all the time really good rain sound effects will do the job for me. I feel like that might be due to my northern coastal environment than anything a game is actually trying to do though.

The main theme for FFIX, "The Place I'll Return to Someday" is so good. I used to just leave my playstation on the main menu so I could listen to the song.

Nothing does it consistently for me. It seems pretty random. Sometimes predictably something genuinely poignant or meaningful will do it, other times it'll happen during some cheesy-shit moment in a D-grade movie that happens to tickle my fancy. It's largely dependent on my frame of mind.

Uhhhhhh.... depends. I feel that orchestrated video game soundtracks all sound the same. I don't feel the same impact as I do with films, I listen to Ennio Morricone religiously every day and not even his BEST works like random stuff like Danger: Diabolik and Exorcist 2 the Heretic.

I feel more a connection with these because their low end junk food films.

And personally for me, 3DS Zelda A Link Between Worlds didn't have the best score, it had creative uses of instruments which was nice. Every time I hear that opening theme it feels it's a hallow shell of a SNES Sony sound chip.

Off-hand, Zanarkand is the only piece of gaming music that comes to mind that can always give me shivers. It's such a supremely perfect piece of music.

The music from that ^ was made by Two Steps From Hell, which I found out makes music for trailers. Like this one for the 2009 Star Trek that also gave me the chills.

I can't think of anything video game related but if you want confirmation that I'm the literal lamest person to ever live, this gives me chills every time. Specifically the part around 2:30.

There are tons of other examples, obviously. Most of them are music related. This song from 1:30 to the end is the first one that comes to mind right now. It's just so real.

It's a bit obscure, and I'm sure most people on this site haven't played it, but whenever this song is played in Ace Attorney Investigations 2, it really hits home with me for some reason. I think it's used really well, and half the scenes it was used it, I teared up a bit.

EDIT: How could I forget this?

I submit to you the Mass Effect 2 ending cut scene. What a fucking perfect end to an amazing game. The ending voice over, the music choice, just excellent stuff. Some may even call it PRIME.

@sackmanjones: Yeah, almost anything Mass Effect is chill worthy. I still get a chill when any of the Reapers speak. I really want a PS4 remaster of the trilogy, even though I own Mass Effect on everything it's ever been made for... which is PS3, 360 and PC.

@futuretuesday: I've always loved the weird angle of that shot in the Mirror Edge trailer. I always thought it looked like she was shooting herself in the knee.

@liquidprince: Right there with you man. I played 2 on 360 twice then got the Ps3 version after my xbox broke and played it again another few times. The trilogy has gone on sale on pc a few times to where I almost bought it but I too am holding out for some sort of updated version on new consoles. I would love a Master Chief Collection for the game and I would have zero shame in picking those games up all over a game. Definitely one of my favorite franchise's to come out of last gen

Every now and then I watch it just to feel the goosebumps, his voice actress is godlike in this scene. Shivers down my spine every time.

Mass Effect 2.

A conversation with Sovereign. Also one of those things that I watch every now and then, it's just so good and terrifying because a space machine-god of an unknown species talks down on you, a shame it ended up with just shooting reapers in the eye until they die.

This god damn song. It makes me choke up every time, perfectly captures what you've been through throughout the games.

The soundtrack to "Under the Skin" - the recent movie with Scarlett Johanssen. It's got this crazy musical score that all I can think of is to describe it as being decidedly unsettling.

Great movie too, but very strange and I would easily see how some people might hate it.

It may not mean much out of context, but when you have all the buildup of character exposition to precede it, there's such a satisfaction that comes in seeing these moments.

Oh man, same here--the day I hunted down an mp3 of this and put it on a CD was a great day.

Also, this track right here--the fiddle/violin damn near brings a tear to the eye every time.

And while we're talking Two Towers, this one (especially combined with the shot of the mountains at the beginning) gets me all tingly.

Whoever did the sound design for that roar deserves props.
