I'm like a little kid waiting for his long lost father to come home. Please Gabe, don't let the announcement be my abusive might-be-a-pedophile uncle.
Please gabe, let Gordon come home a third time.. Pease.. :'(

I really couldn't care less about Half Life as I was never a huge fan of it. Would like to see L4D 3, but I doubt we will see one of those any time soon. I would laugh my ass off if the game was just called Three.
@punkxblaze: I remember when, at E3 2003, they said HL2 would be available only a few months later in August or September of that year. And the game hadn't even been revealed up til that point. Didn't work out that way, but for Valve to attempt a quick release wouldn't be unprecedented.

Fuck all y'all, I hope it's L4D3.
sorry but don't THQ have the rights to Left 4 Dead now? I thought this was obvious? Am I stupid or are all of you?
Valve acquired the Left 4 Dead developers (Turtle Rock) while that game was in development, so they own the rights to the franchise. However some of the Turtle Rock guys left Valve to reform their old studio, where they are now working with THQ. I don't think they were able to take Left 4 Dead with them though. You can't sell your company and its properties and then just take them back.

You can say that you'd rather have Portal 3 or L4D3 over HL3, but ultimately their most innovative IP has always been Half-Life. And it's that innovation that leads to more imaginative and creative mods.
Half-life (2)? Innovative? >_>
In some ways- sure... To an extent. At least arguably in terms of story presentation and certain aspects of gameplay... (Physics/Gravity Gun)
But in terms of the core game design- Half-life (2) wasn't innovative in the slightest. You're talking about the modding potential though- so replace innovative with versatile- and now you're talking. :D
As for my own prediction- if this announcement/rumor is at all true- I actually wouldn't be surprised if it is finally Half-life 3 at this point. I HIGHLY doubt it'll be Portal 3- cause it hasn't been that long since Portal 2.
But then again- there was the tiny gap between L4D1 and 2... So we'll just have to wait until E3 to be sure. >_> (That and L4D3 is another definite possibility at this point)
If it is Half-life 3 though, Valve better be smart by showing it off on a brand new engine and not label it as 'Episode 3.' Otherwise, there will probably be a lot of rage from the fanbase. :|
Seems way too soon for a Portal 3. It would be neat if it turned out to be Half Life 3 but, well, you know. It's probably some new franchise with 3 in the title.
I wouldn't mind more L4D or team fortress. The people who currently play both of those games are kind of people I don't want to interact with, so some new players would be welcome.

It won't be Half-Life 3 or an episode 3. People who honestly believe that are fucking idiots.
Why is that
It would be utter madness if this isn't HL3. I don't even like HL, but I at least recognize that this business with never announcing HL3 after ending the previous game on a cliffhanger is lunacy. I feel bad for the actual fans of the series. Honestly, though, it totally wouldn't surprise me if it's Portal 3. Not one bit.
My old Counterstrike clan spent a glorious couple of months playing Richochet when it came out.Ricochet 3.
I actually fucking loved Ricochet. More than humans should.
