I've just come across a really good infographic which shows some really cool video game statistics - in all honesty its not surprising apart from the fact that there are more over 50's who play computer games compared to under 18's..... I've listed some of the points below, check it out and let me know what you think.

-65% of American households play video games and this number is growing.

-Of that 65% of the US population, 18-49 year olds make up the largest percentage of gamers at 49%

-25% of children under 18 play games

-More people over 50 play computer games then children (26%).

-The average age of a gamer is actually 32 years old.

FEMALES

-Females just love Nintendo’s Wii with 80% saying that it is their primary console, or console of choice.

-11%of females play Microsoft’s Xbox360

-9% of females play Sony’s Playstation3.

MALE

-Males are more divided in terms of console preference.

-41% still play the Wii primarily

-38% prefer Xbox

-21% like the Playstation3.

I would like to know when this data was collected. We know that sales trends have been unkind to the Wii, and that the 360 has gained a bunch marketshare recently. I would like to know how those things translate to actual game playing time.

I don't trust these statistics. They must of asked like 50 people outside of a Best Buy or something.

Aye, not even like it's biased or anything though. They're blatantly wrong. PC gamers have been reduced to mere legend now.

I have an issue with that statistic. 18-49 year olds? Really? That's hardly an age range.

The average play time per week is 18 hours? I wish! I'm lucky if I get in 8 hours.

Well the article was posted yesterday so it would be silly of them to release archaic data.....but I still don't trust the source anyways.

That didn't make sense. Are you talking about the high numbers for women? If so, sexist much?

Really? Explain to me why. As far as I know, the 'casual' audience still has a negative stigma associated with it. Tying that tag, which is usually looked down upon, to a gender sounds pretty sexist to me.

@mandude:

These made up numbers had Women choosing the Wii 80% of the time as their primary console. Men chose it 41% as opposed to the Xbox at 38%. So, the "high number comment" doesn't make much sense for men. Even if it were for both genders, how does it make sense to say "a lot of people=casual"? Am I missing something here? The logic doesn't add up to me.

I'll be honest, I'm kind of giving him the benefit of the doubt, but it was the Viva la PC tacked on at the end, that made me think he was referring to Wii players more than women.

I would assume that if something has less of a market share, the numbers that do make it up are generally more dedicated those that make up the larger part of the market.

I don't see the Wii as a casual console. There's just as much simple, easy-going games on the Wii as there were on the PS2. Did that make the PS2 a casual console? This whole thing is fucking dumb dude.

@JasonR86:Except on the PS2 the majority of the games aren't just simple, easy-going games. Then again, I think that all consoles are casual, so it's better off we end this conversation right here.

Are you doing this to get clicks? Your article makes no mention how this data was collected. You are a shitty human being and should be lynched if you really are making up statistics. How did you get these numbers?

The correct answer is all consoles are casual.

Enough advertising your website on Giant Bomb. I think the community's replies have shown that it's beyond annoying.
