The new systems and games are great and all but I think that the older systems like N64 and super nintendo were more enjoyable. what do you think is better? any specific system in mind
Video games. Classic Vs new age
chances are you think that because you were a stupid kid (like anyone else) and didn't know any better. Everything was awesome back then because nostalgia is a potent thing that allows us to only remember the good stuff, and not the endless sea of bullshit.
And believe me, there was an endless sea of bullshit during that era.
dude like, yeah, but.. i think if someone were to come out of a hypothetical cave they've lived in all their life, a current gen game would be more enjoyable easily, just because it's so stimulating. and i think most parents on here would agree that their kids gravitate towards the newer games. we, us lucky ones, have the gift of being able to enjoy retro games for what they are, and this is something very special i think.
I think making games more accessible has been a double edged sword for the evolution of video games. Sure, having an in game tutorial to teach you how to play and hold your hand until you should be ready can be good for a lot of people, but it's turning into something worse. Now games will hold your hand through half of the experience. Or at least the game will be too easy for too long leaving me bored before I ever get to anything good. I've also noticed things like lack of quantity in terms of game play mechanics. Why can't a game like gears of war have complex systems in place for maybe things like stats and mechanics in for survival blah blah blah etc. Instead we get really good looking games that might as well require a 1 button joystick from days of old.
Meaning I think I enjoy old games more than recent ones. Obvously there have been really great current gen games like Skyrim, Minecraft, Arkham City, etc. that have pushed the boundries forward a little bit. Unfortunately it seems like I can find more fun and complexities in games like X-Com, Nethack, Elder Scrolls Arena, etc.
for every feature developers impliment, they take two more out. The Elder Scrolls used to have everything from climbing to owning houses, throwing weapons and being friends with dragons. They slowing took all that out.
It's still hard for me to consider the SNES and N64 as old classics and realize that they're over 15 and 20 years old. I started gaming in the early 80s and I certainly have some fond memories of the game systems of that era. But for me personally for the sheer nostalgia nothing tops the original NES. I can honestly say I enjoyed far more games for that system than any other. Games like Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 1 - 3, Megaman 1 - 3, Bionic Commando, Metal Gear, Contra. Super C, Rygar, Ikari Warriors, Gradius, Lifeforce, Guardian Legend, Dragon Warrior, Castlevania's 1 - 3, RC Pro-Am, Wizard's & Warriors, Double Dragons 1 - 3, Ninja Gaiden 1 - 3, Pro Wrestling, Ice Hockey, Punch Out!, Legacy of the Wizard, Kid Icarus, Sword of Crystalis... and on and on and on. No other system even comes close.
It's a continuum, and it really does a disservice to the medium to start categorizing different generations as better/worse (especially since it hasn't been around for so long). If you look at film or literature, for instance, very rarely will you find someone championing a certain time period as being objectively better. They all have their merits, and those in the past have been filtered through time: the classics get carried on and most of the junk falls to the wayside. The original NES, for instance, had lots of good games--no one is going to dispute that--but it also had lots of shit on it that were knock offs, bootlegs, or just bad games. They tend to get forgotten, though, outside of features or articles that specifically highlight that kind of stuff. I imagine when we're 20 years away from this console generation, people will view it differently.

Yeah that's just nostalgia. In terms of pretty much everything, today's systems are better. Remember how bad the 64's analog stick was?
I still think that the N64 controller was better suited for FPS games than any modern controller. Though, that may be the months of my life I spent playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark talking ;)
