I'm curious what you all think. What moments in gaming were you completely disappointed by? What are the most anti climactic moments in gaming? This will probably mean lots of spoilers, so be warned.
First, Final Fantasy VIII, and then MGS4:
First, for me, is in Final Fantasy VIII. I remember going to fight Seifer for the final time. My heart rate was high in anticipation of the long awaited battle. We unsheathed our gunblades, and... then Gilgamesh comes. If I remember correctly, I just turned off the game. I was pretty disappointed. The long awaited rivalry, and it ends like that. Come on, Square!
Next, In Metal Gear Solid 4, I felt the final boss battle was completely underwhelming. Then Big Boss coming back? It just didn't work for me, after being a huge fan of the series my entire life.

MGS4 had the best final battle. With you and Ocelot just punching it out.

The end of Fable II was pretty anticlimactic. I was expecting a big epic battle or something, the story was building towards the end but it just sort of ends with no real bang.

The Gilgamesh scene from FFVIII is hilarious! The epic poem that Gilgamesh is from (The Epic of Gilgamesh) is actually all about disappointment and anticlimaxes. I designed a video game based on the Epic using final Fantasy IV-VI graphics and music. It's on my website, gilgameshgame.com

the ending to any of the mount and blade games, absolutely without a doubt. after dropping in a hundred hours in a campaign, your reward for capturing the final castle is to have a single page of text appear, and then immediately bring you back to the startup screen. no music. no credits.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 was pretty anti-climactic. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember beating the final boss and then the game suddenly cutting to credits after a short cutscene that didn't explain a whole lot.

MGSIV had an awesome 6 endings, you be crazy.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time always bugged me. It seems like every Patrice Desilets game ends with you beating up an old guy. What does he have against old guys?

Also Borderlands times a million.

It was terribly underwhelming, especially in the second playthrough. The boss didn't do any damage to my character, but it had a lot of health. It was basically me, shooting it for around 20 mintues till it died, sitting on the same spot for the whole fight. Poof, game ended.

Nearly the end of any game for me. It takes a really great game for me to see it to the end (Bastion being the most recent, and the last game before that being months apart). I get wrapped up in the story and characters, so when the credits come, it makes me wonder what better ways could have been taken to end it.

The fucking mutated lambent-Brumak from Gear of War 2. It's huge, and even on the hardest difficulty, it still goes down within the space of 20 seconds, give or take...they followed up RAAM with this thing...twas a sad event.

Agreed. Not just story-wise, either. The entire existence of the game was a "that's it?" moment. With a special "The fuck is this shit?" for the Vader battle.

There are a few RPGs out there (I remember one being a Final Fantasy game) where you are forced to grind to insane levels just so you can get to the final boss. But, because of that prudent grinding, the final boss is way too easy.

Halo 2 and LA Noire are up there.

Shenmue 2 had a great cliffhanger ending but considering it never payed off, I'd say that's pretty anti climactic.

Any single "Thanks for Playing!" screen from the NES days.

All those weeks of memorizing patterns and trial and error. Sometimes I even make notes on a spiral notebook and all I get is a "Thanks For Playing!"?

I know I shouldn't have expected much, but I was young and didn't know better, I expected more.

I haven't played Fable III so I can't comment in any detail, but from what I've heard Fable III's ending doesn't seem particularly anti-climactic. It sounds very climactic, it just leaves your world in a shitty state afterwards.

Oh definitely. Fable 3's was fucking atrocious, and the sense of dread and scale that Darkness or whatever was meant to of brought was pathetic.

EDIT: Blarg! I've tried to spoiler this wank twice now and it messed up... OK, what I said was ''And the oh so clearly rushed battle against a possessed Walter' Apologies to whoever would of cared about the story of Fable 3.

Fable 3 is so pitiful for so many reasons, and the ending segments rank near the top for me.

A lot of what I would of said has already been mentioned; Borderlands, L.A Noire, MGS4 during the Big Boss history class clusterfuck. Another that always comes up for me is Psi Ops. It wasn't a particularly engaging storyline, but I loathe abrupt cliff-hangers like that. Oh and speaking of which, Assassins Creed...

For me it was probably the beginning of Metal Gear Solid 2.
The insane love I had for the original was total squashed and I never felt the same about the franchise again.

@Brendan:
Cliff hangers for me generally are awful. I don't mind some loose ends purposely left to leave into a sequel, but something like that that just completely ends just as the story begins to get good I can't stand. Besides I hated everything to do with the original Assassins Creed anywhoo and the only thing that kept me was the story of Desmond, so when there was something that I was beginning to find engaging be snapped right away from me, it sucked.

The end of MGS4 is the only actual climactic finale I can think of in a video game besides for Max vs. Vlad in Max Payne 2.
