I thought this would be an interesting topic. With regards to the podcast I don't have a problem with Xrd winning but I would have had a problem with most of the games that were cut after these three:
1. Alien: Isolation
2. Luftrausers
3. Shadow of Mordor
Alright so Shadow of Mordor is a game that just consistently looks excellent. I feel like every 3rd person fantasy/adventure game is just going to look exactly the same as the Witcher 2 in the future (and maybe they already do) with very incremental upgrades. But hey the Witcher 2 looked damn good and the Witcher 2 with larger environments and more interesting combat animations is going to wind up looking better.
Luftrausers looks awesome.
A big part of what makes Alien tick is how it looks/feels/sounds, this is a game with relatively poor gameplay that just works somehow despite that. The incredibly immersive visual style merged with the ridiculously good sound effects makes a mediocre game into one of the best games of the year. Ultimately while it might not have the highest of high points (Destiny on Venus exterior environments) I think it consistently delivers a similar visual experience throughout that dramatically impacts the gameplay.
Aside: Crysis 3 on PS3 looks better than most PS4 games.
