I find the concept of a backlog (+ue?) a bit ridiculous these days what with the ease of access to 30+ years of games. Is it only games I own? Is it only games I never played at all? Does it include games I played but never finished? What exactly is "finished"? I own a whole lot of games I hope to play some day. There are also quite a few that I don't own that I want to play sometime.

@jduster: Not sure Overwatch can really be on your backlog when it isn't out yet.

The two games I really want to get to are SMT: Devil Summoner Soul Hackers ( almost done with it, really interesting game that holds up shockingly well) and Steins;Gate which I have barely touched yet.

One is on 3DS and one is on Vita. I'll probably get to them when I have an itch to play something on a handheld again.

I have 279 games that I haven't completed on Steam (only roughly accurate: some can't be completed, some are HD versions of games I've completed, some are completed but I still intend to play the DLC, etc...)

Stuff that's high on my list:

  • Enslaved
  • Shining Force II
  • Trine
  • Deus Ex: The Fall (I feel like I should play it before Mankind Divided >_>)
  • Ryse
  • Doom 3
  • Papo & Yo
  • Neverending Nightmares
  • L.A. Noire
  • I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream

I'm slowly getting through it, this year has been one of the better ones progress wise. All the JRPGs are gonna slow me down big time and I've come to realize maybe I don't love the genre like I once did but I'll grind them out none the less.

I have a lot of games on Steam that I own and say "I'm gonna play this one of these days." This list if whittled down to just those that I'm actually going to go back and play within the next 12 months. There's just too many games coming out in 2016 though. I'm trying to alternate one game at a time between new release and backlog.

  • Wolfenstein: TNO
  • Metro Last Light
  • Dead Space 1/2
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • Darksiders 1/2
  • Mad Max
  • Metal Gear Rising
  • Sins of Solar Empire Rebellion
  • The Darkness 2
  • This War of Mine
  • Victor Vran
  • Dawn of War 1/2
  • Shadow of the Colossus

When does a backlog just become a list of games we have access to?

That's what these lists often look like. OP, at least give some comments on what you feel about it, it's just a list at the moment!

I think you actually need to have the intent to play games for them to be part of a backlog. Otherwise they're just a list of games you probably don't really want to play? Or you probably would have done it already.

Maybe it's best to rank these things into an order, otherwise they will probably never get played.

So my backlog right now is:

1. The new DOOM ,which I don't yet own.

2. Uncharted Collection, to do before playing Uncharted 4. I own neither.

3. The Fallout 4 Far Harbour DLC which will come out this week.

4. 8-Bit Armies

That's it. Those are the games I actually want to play at this moment. There are other games out this year that are also in my backlog, like Zelda, Persona, Mafia III etc.

I still feel that unless you are seriously intending to play something, you can't have it in your 'backlog'. 'It seems like it's more a guilty feeling of having games spent money on games we haven't gotten into, but if you pick up games cheaply on Steam (where the backlog problem seems to stem from) and realise you don't like them, that's fine. That's the advantage of sales.

Right now I've got: last of us and rise of the tomb raider 3/4 of the way done. However, they'll have to wait for the doom to be over. Besides that I still want to start playing FFIX on steam.

I hate the idea of a backlog list. Just play what you want to play when the mood strikes. There are so many games it's impossible to list every single one you might find interesting.

In the amount of time it would take for me to properly catalog my backlog, I could probably finish one of the games on the list.

My console game list says I have 805 games still to complete (I don't count PC games on GOG/Steam in the list). I don't let it bother me, I still just play what I feel like playing and replay games I've already finished, should the feeling to do so arise.

I don't own a lot of games. I usually sell ones I don't like, and I try not to go digital if at all possible. So, it looks like I have 47 unfinished games.

I used to have a lot more, but sold most of it and closed digital accounts I didn't use anymore.

Ignoring Steam because I buy humble bundles for one game sometimes:

PS4 is Tropico, Nobunaga's Ambition, Divinity: Original Sin, Dragon Age Inquistion, Wolfenstein on Hard

PS3 is AC: Rogue (super fun game), Evil Within (I would have beaten this but good games started to come out), Warriors Orochi 3, Dino Crisis 1 and 2, Legend of Mana, few other PS Classics

PSP is Breath of FIre 3, Tactics Ogre

If we're talking all games that I own but haven't played, then that'll be a massive nightmare that doesn't bear thinking about. What I've got directly in front of me is a bit more manageable.

  • Doom 4/2016
  • Fallout 4
  • Grey Goo
  • Stories: The path of Destinies
  • XCOM 2
  • Little Big Adventure (the only Oldie on my current to-do list)

Also picked up this odd little game called Goliath on a whim. We shall see how well that pans out.

I'm not a fan of making a "backlog" list, it just feel like it turns gaming into a chore. I have a hell of a lot of games, it's likely I'll never finish all of them and I'm cool with that.

I'm slowly building my retro collection (NES, SNES, GEN, N64), even if I had all the free time in the world, it would be awhile before I'd get done. I also have a most of my PS2/GC stuff from back in the day.
Minus a few late PS2 Atlus RPG's, like 1 Resident Evil or 2 on GC, & games from last gen (360, PS3, Wii) I'm pretty caught up there.

I do have a backlog, but it's more for what I want to play, rather than I have to play. I don't have much free time, & I'd like to spend it on things I know i'm going to enjoy. If I don't end up playing it/beating it, then I really didn't like it or cared in the first place or it dragged on for to long.
If you buy something, but don't end up finishing it, it's not your fault, just move on.

Games I bought with the intention of playing soon but didn't get around to yet (since we all seem to have our own definition of the word 'backlog'):

Jade Empire
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Valkyria Chronicles
Alpha Protocol
Wasteland 2
Consortium (although this was free)

I also really need to get on Fallout 4, but I didn't buy it yet and at this point I may just wait for a GOTY edition or whatever.

I'm not sure I even dare listing it. Last time I checked the amount was in the hundreds on PC alone. And then I started to look at the time it would take to get to all of them.

My desire for immortality only increases by the day.

Sigh... Let me count.

97 games. Great. Now I'm slightly depressed. At least it's smaller than my reading list.

No Caption Provided

Edit - forgot to count the games at the top of the backlog. So... 110 games. Super.

I believe the concept of the backlog was always the games you wanted to play, never did play (to satisfaction; whether that means finished or not) and still intend on playing.

For example, I never played the original XCOM and despite having 900+ hours in Enemy Unknown/Within and 219 hours in XCOM 2, I do not intend to play it so it's not on my backlog. I never did finish Wolfenstein The New Order and at some point said: 'Meh, I also don't want to play that again' so it wasn't on my backlog. But, for whatever reason I've been thinking about it lots lately and really want to play it again, so it's on my backlog.
