for me it was The Witcher 2... until i played Skyrim. which i have sunk nearly 50 hours into since i got it before the weekend. some thing i NEVER do.
What game do you think will win Giantbomb's overall game of the year?
@Linkster7: Patrick could also end up being the one the likes it the most! Very happy to know that at least Vinny is genuinely excited for some Zelda.
It will be Vinny fighting for Zelda against the World, and It will be glorious :)
Skyrim, and there will be little argument. Ryan and/or Jeff might get behind Saints Row 3 for a while in a half-joking way, but ultimately drop it. Mortal Kombat will be brought up, but Jeff will let it be sidelined like SFIV was in 2009.

Skyrim. Jeff will push for Gears though.
Didn't you hear him in the Skyrim Quick Look saying "Looking back on 2011, it sort of sucked until this came along."
A few months ago I would have said it was going to be a toss up between Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Zelda, or Batman. Hell maybe even Gears or Assassins would be in the mix. But it is pretty clear, Skyrim will win by a landslide.
Well, here are my ratings of the year's best games.
Dead Space 2: 9
Crysis 2: 9
Portal 2: 9
LA Noire: 8.5
Deus Ex HR: 9
Gears of War 3: 8.5
Rage: 7.5
Battlefield 3: 8
Uncharted 3: 9
Batman Arkham City: 9.5
Skyrim: 9.8
I like to think my taste in games is pretty close to the GB guys, so it looks like Skyrim.
I'm guessin' Batman, they all seemed to love it, and had virtually nothing bad to say about it (unlike Uncharted 3). I haven't listened to this weeks Skyrim talk yet, though.
EDIT: Should be Portal.
EDIT x2: @LiquidPrince: You put Modern Warfare on that list and not Portal? What's wrong with you?!
I think this is the most obvious it has been since Giant Bomb started, Skyrim, there can be no other way.
i know personally, when i fired up darksouls it was a pretty instant game of the year decision for me,
then i played skyrim, and unless somehow it falls horribly off the rails along the way, my first 20 hours or so isnt GOTY its probably one of the best games i have ever played, fullstop, so yes its my game of the year, i can't imagine many people having played skyrim and not agreeing with that,
Pssh, it's obviously Modern Warfare 3.
Seriously though I voted MW3 seeing as it's the only one I've played so far. If I were to go with my gut (and the majority) it would be Skyrim hands down.
Nearly every other game has been a let down. Also, it seems your list is comprised of games that came out within the last month or so, which is not repsentative of the whole year. It's definately missing a few good titles from earlier this year. I believe Skyrim will take it rather easily.
The only 2 games that everyone has played, and has enjoyed without much reservation is Portal 2 and Skyrim. It will be between those two.
Skyrim will probably win and it will be much deserved. What it does is pretty known quantity but masterfully put together. Portal 2, on the other hand, is something completely different, in my opinion. I just played through it again and it's damn near perfect. And, not like BF3 and Skyrim, it was perfect when it launched.
Yeah... I can't look pass that I had to lower the audio output quality to keep Skyrim from crashing within 15 minutes. Shame.
But it's not my call. I'm looking forward to hear the GB crew argue over this :)

I'd say Skyrim, because it's the freshest experience to them, and Portal 2, while amazing to them, came out at the start of this year. Games usually (but not always) that come out near the beginning of the year don't win game of the years. I think runner ups for game of the year though will be Gears of War 3, Dead Space 2, Uncharted 3, Arkham City, and Portal 2. I think Skyrim will probably win if all of them play it and enjoy it. I'm going off how I perceive their views as, not my own. I haven't played Uncharted 3, Arkham City, or Skyrim yet, though I will be playing Skyrim soon enough; whenever my brother's done with it. Oh, and another runner up might be L.A. Noire.
mass effect 2?

GOTY is usually so obvious every year that I'm always much more excited to see the ''Top 10'' videos for each individual staff member.
Overall GOTY's are bullshit, but the individual lists are good.
Jeff is the reason why it's Skyrim. When he said "I was feeling really bummed about this year until this came out" pretty much sealed it.
I'd love it to be Dark Souls but I just can't see that happening. In that case I can't see how it could be anything else but Skyrim for GOTY.
@usgrovers: why not they decided not to review it because they covered the development of it, when it is time to judge a game against its peers why not. Bastion is a great game and it deserves to be in the conversation.
God this. I always feel like GB has taken game journalism "to the next level" or whatever you want to call it, essentially promoting each individual editor instead of hiding behind the site's name pretending everyone is the same ("This is what we thought of the game" or "come join us as we tell you what we think of it!") and yet for some reason they still hold onto this dumb and outdated idea of a unified GOTY.@Abyssfull said:

Everyone is different and everyone is going to have a different opinion for GOTY, so what is even the point of a unified one? iirc last year ME2 was only the winner on 2 of the guy's lists, and wasn't even in Alex's top 10 and yet it won overall goty. Why? Clearly most of the staff didn't think it was the best game of the year since they each spent prior days telling us what was the best. I honestly can't even take unified GOTY choices seriously, on GB or any site. Individual is the way to go, always.
Oh and Skyrim is clearly going to win, though I will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't.
Skyrim. Everyone seemed disappointed by everything else, and with Pat and Brad with a say, they're not going to let it go.

Also: I refuse to believe Skyrim will beat out Portal 2. I'd like to hope that saner heads will prevail and see that Portal 2 wins on both a technical front and a qualitative front. Better, more engrossing experience overall compared to Skyrim.
...
That or they'll just give MW3 the award. I'm ok with that.
Even though it probably took more technical skill to make Skyrim's world than Portal 2?
You bashing Skyrim every chance you get is pretty funny.
The problem is Skyrim is technically incompetent in so many ways due to so many ridiculous issues that have carried themselves forward from previous Bethesda games. It's embarrassing that a game as good as Skyrim has the issues that it does. There's something to be said for building an incredible 2 floor house over a mansion that has issues throughout. That's the case here with Portal 2 vs. Skryim.
Also you're misinterpreting my comments about Skyrim. I'm playing through it and I'm having a hell of a time. It's a great game and that's coming from someone who thought Oblivion was complete shit (let's be honest with ourselves, it was). What I'm speaking out against is people overrating the game by intentionally looking past major issues, largely technical.
