What game you do you believe get a lot of undeserved hatred?
Anyway, I think Metroid: Other M got a lot of undeserved hatred. That's not to say I couldn't see why people wouldn't like it. The story was shit. The controls took some time to get used to. But overall, the action was fantastic, and once you got the controls down, the dodge mechanic made you a complete badass. The boss battles were also pretty brilliant. And to be honest, I've never played a Metroid game for the story, which is why I could turn a blind eye to it.
" Far Cry 2. "I can't believe you had the courage to say that. I have to give you props for it.
Modern Warfare 2 definitely got a lot more hate than it deserved, albeit not from critics. It was just another textbook case of popular games getting bashed on the internet. The game's multiplayer had some glitches but nothing worthy of the backlash it received shortly after launch.
" Modern Warfare 2 definitely got a lot more hate than it deserved, albeit not from critics. It was just another textbook case of popular games getting bashed on the internet. The game's multiplayer had some glitches but nothing worthy of the backlash it received shortly after launch. "I agree.
I don't mind that people don't enjoy WoW. But I find it hilarious when people act like it 'stole their friends away'. I'm sorry your friend has weak willpower, but that's not the game's fault.
The first Assassin's Creed. 2 and Brotherhood are better but the first was great when it came out and it still is but ever since 2 came out everyone started saying it was terrible. I played 2 first to completion and recently (like last week) got the first one and it was so good. However I do plan on getting 2 again instead of borrowing it like last time and Brotherhood but the first game definitely doesn't deserve the hate it got.
I don't know about you guys, but I think Ratchet and Clank gets hated a lot for looking childish. Sure it does, but the games (Atleast the PS2 games) would be rated Teen and have some humor that younger children wouldn't understand. However, since it's debut on the PS3, its been getting a little more kid friendly.
Alpha Protocol got a lot of undeserved flack. Its buggy and the shooting is janky, but there is so much more to the game. Definitely worth a look if you like hybrid shooters. Reminded me a lot of Deus Ex and MGS. Totally bitchin' game.
Hatred? Well, even I gotta say it's insane how much people hate on Halo and Call of Duty. And I don't even like FPS games.
The onslaught GT5 received after and prior its release is absolutely baffling as well. What the hell did Polyphony Digital ever do
to have their creation be dissected like this? It is, after all, more Gran Turismo, and that's pretty fantastic, if you ask me.
And FFVII, definitely. But that was entirely brought on by insane hype in the first place.
I'm going to be flamed by every Morrowind fan around here. No doubt. I'm still going to say that Oblivion, gameplay wise, is better than Morrowind. Okay, I have to admit that Morrowind had a far more unique setting and art design than Oblivion's generic D&D theme. The story was a little more interesting too. Other than that, I still prefer Oblivion. I think it's a much much easier to get into and better focused game than Morrowind. Angry Morrowind fan in 1... 2... 3...I feel ya. Love both games equally, but Oblivion's gameplay was far superior to Morrowind. Just wish it had as much depth.
This is actually the first GTA that I immensely enjoyed. The game is a bit overrated by critics, but it doesn't it's far from a terrible game. The two biggest problems I've had with prior GTAs, were the missions and the farcical storytelling. The main missions were often poorly designed, based too much on time limits, and frustrating. The protagonist of the previous GTAs were two-dimensional and unlikable macho tough guys. The missions in GTA IV are well designed, never too easy or frustrating, and no time based missions (Well, there are a few, but they give a reasonable time limit this time). The protaganist is actually sympathetic this time around, and the story was rather compelling. It may not be as "sandboxy" as previous GTA installments, but the core gameplay and storyline radically improved in IV.I'm singling this one out because it was so over-praised. For me it has one big flaw, but it was big enough to make me quit. The god damn socializing was such an annoyance I couldn't take it any more. All I wanted to do was to sit back and play but I couldn't because some one kept calling me wanting to hang out.. You coulnd't ignore them either because it would then hurt your standing. I don't like getting phone calls when I'm playing a game and I certainly hate it when it's the game who keeps calling me. I think a lot of reviews of admitted they over shot the score because a game with such a poorly designed flaw shouldn't be rated a perfect 10.
But it had a lot of awesome moments, for sure.
" @SethPhotopoulos said:He was an asshole yes but I didn't mean that guy." @ryanwho: The theme of the thread is you can have opinions but don't be an asshole about it. "Yo I was pretty hard on that dude who wants to murder fat retards, I take it all back. "
Some of that is understandable. Because these games are popular, some may sincerely believe they are given passes they do not deserve. I used to believe that about the halo franchise, because it was held up constantly as consoles answer to Pc's dominance in first and third shooters. And it is a prejudice I still favor, though I have swung around on Halo since the latest gen. of consoles have come out. They, simply put, changed the equation, though playing with a controller still can lack.
Grand Auto 4 to me was a disappointment. I'm still back with Vice city, an honest and great game. But I only got a few hours in, I will try again.
The Final Fantasy series has it's own Adherents, and I am not one of them. that said, the women, and even some of the men(sorry!) tend to be very pretty. Otherwise I do not relate.
Call of duty by Tryarch this last time around is obviously a rousing commercial success. I liked it!. I think Vinny was right in that they borrowed heavily from movies, and I believe other media such as books, particularly novels, the Vietnam mythos(gotta have that vietnam era rock and roll, and even a trip through the tunnels) they did borrow from infinity ward, but that wasn't their only source. Hell, james Bond with that diving scene...
I played fallout 3 instead of Oblivion.
I never look at sports games, such as Madden. personal fitness in the future may become an exception. And multiplayer games such as call of duty, Battlefield, and Medal of Honor leave me a bit jealous for the attention they get while the single player sometimes lacks. But of course I know it's simply going with what ppl. want, and even what the developers are good at.
I've got no specific game that hasn't been mentioned already, but I will say that anything that has become a mainstream success will spawn a vocal minority that hate everything about it.
I am, however, getting tired of all those people claiming they are hardcore whilst belittling the casual gamer. Be glad there are more people into gaming than ever before. Be happy that the Wii made gaming popular with the masses. Without those "casual" gamers, the industry would not be where it is now, and we would not be seeing these massive, high-budget games. Gaming is big not thanks to the hardcore (I seriously hate the distinction), but thanks to the casual gamers.
I did say that the game was over-praised by critics, as it isn't flawless. But it's good enough to outweight most of it's flaws. The friends system was the most annoying part of the game. The shooting mechanics were heavily improved from previous installments, even though the cover mechanic didn't work properly most of the time." @GhostlyEnigma said:

The majority don't really like these games, but they're split with the "hardcore gaming bros" who believe they have a higher gaming stance to hating a certain popular games and believe everyone else should hate it too. I'm not saying everyone should like these games, but at least have legitimate stance or a subjective view for their dislike. Not be an asshole about it, like this one asshole who posted on this blog." @GhostlyEnigma: You've named some of the most popular games of all time. There are always going to be some people who don't like something, but that's down to opinion. The majority liked them/ Alpha Protocol got a lot of undeserved flack. See what I mean?" mainstream means the game gets easier and for multiplayer 10 year old kids who yell prophanity in their mics, look at counter strike mainstream? sure, tons of little kids running around killing their team mates, no because the game is challenging "
" @SethPhotopoulos said:I've never heard anyone dumb enough to call it the best RPG ever, FF game yes, although those who say that are in my opinion incorrect." @Video_Game_King said:How so? I just hate how people hype up FF7 as the best RPG ever. I agree with them in that it's good, but the best? There are better ones out there. Perhaps I should adjust my definition to say that a lot of people have to hype the shit out of a game before it can become overrated, since that happens with pretty much every overrated game I can think of. "" @SethPhotopoulos: No, there can be such a thing; it's just that people have confused it with the phrase "bad", so it's worthless. Overrated means people love a game more than it deserves; the game can still be good, but not as good as people think. FF7 is proof. "Thats the stuff I'm talking about though. The attitude of saying that people shouldn't like something as much as they do because you don't get the same amount of enjoyment is kind of offensive. "
Ratchet and Clank: UYA was the best Ratchet and Clank game ever. It blended the best bits of shooting and the best bits of platforming and made it control extremely well. Take that Giant Bomb staff.
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames...I can't excuse, and it deserves all the hate it gets. However, I still enjoyed it as an open-world action game. I thought it was an awful sequel to the first game.
Tony Hawk's Underground was awesome, one of the best of the Tony Hawk series of games. THUG 2 was an even better game, even if it did have Bam Margera. Do you really come to sports games for a story anyway?
Fallout 3 was entirely different from the first two games. I still enjoyed it after playing the first game. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to play FO3, but would want to play FO1&2. Play them all, because they're all awesome.
Popular games always get a bit of criticism, but whether it's deserved or not really rests in the eye of the beholder. It's important to recognize that when people level criticism at a game (or call it "overrated") what they're doing is talking about themselves, not everyone else. Calling a game overrated simply means that the average opinion of the game is higher than their own. It's not necessarily a comment on other people's opinions, but a comment about their opinion in relation to others.
I don't understand why anyone would passionately hate any games. Is it really worth the effort? Just don't play it. I mean, even games I had high hopes for (Dead Rising, for instance) that I ended up not liking certainly don't rate hatred. Opinions are subjective, after all, and certain game mechanics that some people love are going to seem inadequate or even broken to others. Games like Halo, CoD, etc., get hated actively by a small number because they aim for broad mainstream audiences. And gamers are definitely a clique-ish bunch. We break ourselves down into subgroups all the time, and we certainly have our snooty elitist gamers about who love their genre games and don't like anything else. But someone can certainly make broad criticisms of a game or genre (say, the oft-maligned JRPG genre) and not be hating them. A lot of it has to do with attitude, not content.
A lot of that is like elitist indie-rock aficionados. Mostly it's about feeling more committed to gaming than other people. It strikes me as a bit silly, but then people are entitled to get whatever they want out of gaming. While I'd certainly prefer people not be dickish about it, they're certainly entitled to it. And the rest of us are entitled to laugh at them in return. My suggestion would be to not take gaming (or anything in life, actually) so seriously that you start actively hating people because of it. Argue forcefully, but don't hate.
" Enslaved has been given some undeserved hate, even though it was freaking great. "i wouldn't go so far as to say it received critical hate--enslaved was simply neglected by the public.
" @SethPhotopoulos: No, there can be such a thing; it's just that people have confused it with the phrase "bad", so it's worthless. Overrated means people love a game more than it deserves; the game can still be good, but not as good as people think. FF7 is proof. Also, I'll say that FF13 doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. FF12 deserves all that hate. Where's the FF12 hate? "Nowhere, because FF12 was awesome.
No, it wasn't. The tagline for it read, "Final Fantasy XII: For people who love games, but hate actually playing them."
" @HaltIamReptar: No, it wasn't. The tagline for it read, "Final Fantasy XII: For people who love games, but hate actually playing them." "Yet, I loved it so.
Final Fantasy XIII. Nobody seems capable of finding a middle ground. There are the people that say it's amazing, and then everyone else claims that it's the worst thing to be released this generation.
I imagine that's because you don't have a lot of time to play games, so you like one that caters to that part of you.
@natetodamax:
Again, it's spillover hate from FF12. Because gamers are idiots.
" @HaltIamReptar:Negatory. I appreciate how passive the game is, but I still got a lot of enjoyment from it.
I imagine that's because you don't have a lot of time to play games, so you like one that caters to that part of you.
What part of the game did you like? Was it when you spent more time holding a dictionary than a controller? Or when the game got all pissed when you tried to reverse this?
" @HaltIamReptar: What part of the game did you like? Was it when you spent more time holding a dictionary than a controller? Or when the game got all pissed when you tried to reverse this? "I don't understand where your vitriol is coming from.

I played it; that's where it comes from.
@SethPhotopoulos:
I actually have a list of all the words I had to look up while playing this game (it's from a long-forgotten blog), and I remember being somewhat generous. Let me cut the list down:
abaft
adjudge
amphora
anathema
bauble
bereft
cannonade
deifacted
docent
effulgent
eldritch
ensanguined
evanescence
eventide
fallow
founder
fulminate
hark
intercession
jerkin
lambent
maundering
nill
pell-mell
pinion
resplendence
roil
stygian
sunder
surfeit
vortice
wroth
That's still a lot of fucking words. Hell, if I remember correctly, "sunder" is listed as "arcane" in the dictionary; when the dictionary is telling you that nobody uses a fucking word anymore, maybe it's time to cut back.
Extermination. It was Sony's answer to Resident Evil. It had some stuff that was ahead of its time and a story that had some pretty cool stuff directly inspired by obvious films. If the voice acting most of the time was actually competent and the combat more refined, it would have been awesome.
" @HaltIamReptar: You like Final Fantasy XII; clearly, this crime cannot go unpunished. "Alright.
God I hate the term "overrated" so much as it essentially claims a thing such as "objective quality" exists in something as nebulous all the various components stuffed into this thing we call a video game.
On topic, I'll easy mode it and say "really massively popular game number 26." More specifically, I can say my personal criticisms of Mass Effect and Dragon Age can be considered unwarranted. I stand by my opinion that those two games are deeply faulted and offer little in terms of weighty choices. But its probably Bioware's own back patting of how ground breaking those two franchises apparently are in terms of choices that makes the faults offend me so much.
COD World At War: I actually enjoyed playing it and thought it was quite decent... a lot of people were upset at the portrayal of the Japanese, but to them I say, this is a videogame...right?
Also, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, just because many people found the difficulty hard, but if you put the effort in, it was awesome.
And also MGS4: just because the story is a bit loco, and just because some of the cut scenes run for 15 minutes doesn't mean it's a shit game. One of the best games out there

Also, the voice acting... to be honest I can't remember all of it, but there was definitely some angry people in Australia regarding the game."
