I enjoyed Ski Resort Tycoon. Now the world knows.
What game you do you believe get a lot of undeserved hatred?
" @Tsoglani: That kind of raises the question of exactly what kind of authenticity of experience we want in a game. A somewhat racist view of the Japanese would be somewhat accurate through the perspective of a marine. We know now that kamikaze pilots were often well educated college students forced into the role for example, and that the civilian population was not anywhere as near set up on the death before occupation mentality as we thought, but ignoring how much the US bought into Japan's own propaganda of itself would have been pretty disingenuous imo... "I concur.
I don't know if this comment belongs in this topic or not, but bear with me, please.
I am on my second playthrough of Mass Effect 2. It has been almost a whole year since I last played it, and it's as great as I remembered when I played it in January. I agree it's more third-person shooter than RPG, but the story is incredibly epic, and the characters that join your crew are great, too. But, what feels most improved to me is the Combat. The original Mass Effect is a wonderful game, but I was annoyed on how poorly you shoot weapons in the beginning of the game, and it doesn't improve until you seriously improve your skills. Here, the combat is much more satisfactory and fun. I'm playing as a Paragon, with a few points in Renegade.
Frankly, I am bewildered as to why there are some people out there who hate this game. They keep complaining how repetive it is, in that you have to keep gaining your teammates' loyalty by going on personal missions with them. What they may not understand is that You need to form a powerful team in order to fight the main enemies of the game, and in order to do that, you need to help your teammates get rid of any emotional baggage, so they can be fully focused on the mission.
Sorry, if I offended anyone, I just needed to write that.
Any game that is well reviewed by critics and/or is financially successful gets a lot of undeserved hate from the internet. Why? Because the majority of internet posters try to be contrarian smartasses, regardless of whether their opinions are valid or not.
If the majority of these kinds of threads are full of people who say what you say, what does that make you? Do you feel more comfortable painting a picture where you're the underdog fighting a current of hatred? Cus apparently "the majority" do, if this thread and the dozens of identical responses like this indicate. I hate to break it to you bud, but you hold a majority opinion and you're largely fighting phantoms of your own making." Easy.
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.
It may not have been the rote sequel that "old fans" wanted but it was a (another) perfect example of the QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP that made RARE famous in the first place.
" WOW. You know who you people are. "Guilty as charged. On second thought, I never really hated the game. I hated the fact that my roommate wouldn't leave the house, and would sit in his room and play it non-stop. It basically killed our friendship. The game itself is perfectly fine, if you know how to put the controller down every couple hours.
Regardless, I apologize for having any ill feelings toward the game.

I can't believe you listen to him, faggot (See I just insulted you for no reason again, faggot)
Mmm interesting. Anyway.
The Dynasty Warriors series isn't brilliant, but people who never played it shit on it all the time. I tend to like the Empires expansions. But when you've got quick looks like jeff's where he sets the game to very easy then bitches about it being very easy, well the jeff parrots have their talking point. The levels are different in every game, so its not the "same game", and it continues to be based in the same story but game stories are bullshit anyway and they tread familiar ground constantly. It just seems like something people feel fine making fun of even with zero actual experience with it. What's really laughable is they'll do that then go play Dead Rising 2 which has even more tedious gameplay and even more braindead AI, but apparently dumb AI is fine under the pretense of zombie invasion. Its not a crime to like a mindless game, many games are mindless. The idea of shitting on a game for being a popular linchpin of mindlessless then getting back to pressing x 5 times for some other mindless game that presents its mindlessness more cinematically is asinine.

"Which is why I hate the term "overrated." I believe there is no such thing. It's just people not liking stuff as much as others and saying they are the only correct people in the world. "My thoughts exactly. Saying that something is "overrated" is just like saying "I don't like it but I can't be bothered to give it a reasonable criticism"
" GTA 4 for sure! That game is enormous and insane, with a very captivating story! Then I see people calling it a POS and not explaining why. "I loved the apparent and underlying themes of the main game. People bitch because it ain't San Andreas. People want non-sequitur and pretty much useless activities.

They just keep releasing sequels to it because it sells and they can do it on the cheap. I'm pretty sure anyone who plays the games (myself included) could make a huge list of improvements to the game that would make it truly great but I seriously doubt Koei would ever make the steps required to accomplish that goal. It's mainly the kids who loved the ridiculousness that was San Andreas to death and can't comprehend a mature and good story that bitched about how it was "boring" and I don't know what else. I'm glad that Rockstar decided to go into that direction and leave all the kids with Down Syndrome playing Saints Row 2. I hope they continue like that and not listen to those little imbeciles that shouldn't be playing such games in the first place.
Who are you to tell people they don't like a game as much as they think? Just because you don't like it as much as they do doesn't mean they don't like it more than you. Seriously. The word is stupid and needs to get out of everybodys gaming vocabulary." @SethPhotopoulos: No, there can be such a thing; it's just that people have confused it with the phrase "bad", so it's worthless. Overrated means people love a game more than it deserves; the game can still be good, but not as good as people think. FF7 is proof. Also, I'll say that FF13 doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. FF12 deserves all that hate. Where's the FF12 hate? "

i think a lot of jrpg's get a lot of undeserved hate. i can think of 4-5'ish that i would have in my 'top 10' ps2 games list. i think they are an easy target because we arent the core audience in western countries. sort of like how halo appeals to tweens i guess? The attitude of saying that people shouldn't like something as much as they do because you don't get the same amount of enjoyment is kind of offensive. "
i don't really think people hype it as the 'best' RPG ever, as much as it is just continuously highlighted as an important game in the history of games. i think to call ff7 the definitive rpg is fair call. it basically set out the rules for what was considered 'jrpg' in the 3d games that were to come after it. BEST rpg though, i think that's just fan boys getting excited. at the time it might have been though.
Is it overrated? I say it kind of is. Is it bad? No, in fact it's far from bad. It's a damn good game. It help open JRPGs to the western market. Without it, great JRPG games such as Xenogears and the Persona series would probably wouldn't attract a large fanbase in the west.Glad this game got a mention. It's actually the only Final Fantasy I've played to completion (almost beat FFX but got frustrated when I got to a boss that could kill my whole party in one attack). I ended up really getting into the tactics system in it. Damn fine game.
Oblivion sucks. It is the very definition of bland. There's a ton of stuff to do, but none of it feels meaningful or has any real impact.
People don't hate on Halo because of its gameplay or story. They hate on Halo because of the effect it had on the gaming world. It was the franchise that robbed PC gamers of the FPS genre and single-handedly flooded the world with homophobic, sexist, racist, squeaky-voiced teen bitches. " @Trilogy said:I get that. I mean, why isn't Empire mode just part of the main campaign? Why not have a historical mode where you play as a side instead of a person (which is therefore able to be more accurate), and also a mode where you play as a person instead of a side (which is able to take more liberties)? They kind of just jump between the two. The way they deal out expansions is just a remnant of the old way of doing things, they keep doing it because in Japan it continues to work for them. I would say DW5 and DW6 has some fairly significant differences, but DW5 had like 3 expansions in the meantime. As for doing something more substantial in the time period, they tried that. Dynasty Tactics 1 and 2 were pretty brilliant, didn't sell for shit. ROTK keeps getting made but its numbers have never been great. I guess they feel like if they make the main DW games overly complex they'll lose those high numbers they get in Japan." @ryanwho said:This EXACTLY, Dynasty Warriors is a fun series. Cry me a river a build a damn bridge over it. Halo help shooters to become multi-platform. Now console gamers are able to play shooters that PC gamers can play. Not everything should be exclusive to one "SUPERIOR" machine. Deal with it.
Another thing, I've been hearing obnoxious jerks online before I played Halo. There's always an anonymous group who's sole purpose is to piss someone off. It's been going around in Counter-Strike, before Halo 2 revolutionized console online play. Stop making Halo as a scapegoat for spewing more mindless hate.

"Over-rated" is term used by people with no respect for any one's opinion, if it does not coincide with their own. They have a compulsive need to degrade, or down-grade anything they lack the desire or ability to appreciate. Case-in-point: I never could get into the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". I simply could not get past the title, and enjoy the show. It was a very well-made show, and had millions of loyal fans--but I wasn't one of them. Does this mean the show was "over-rated"? No. It means I under-appreciated it. It's a game's fans that, ultimately decide how a game rates, in popularity, at least. Self-appointed critics may give it low ratings, but that makes no never mind. "Critics" gave the first "Star Wars" movie low ratings, too. A lot they knew.
