What genre do you associate with different consoles?

It might be the games I played and I had access to, but I have always associated the Super Nintendo with two kinds of games: JRPGs and subpar licensed platforms.

I didn't play too many games for the PS2 but what I did play were mostly JRPGs I couldn't play anywhere else.

Over the years I still associate certain consoles with certain genres. The PSX still makes me think of RPGs and fighting games and the Neo Geo with top-down or sidescrolling shooters.

So what genres do you associate with which consoles? Are the SNES and PS2 really a JRPG machine or did I live in an RPG bubble?

Mine are all obvious.

N64: 3d Platformers.

PS1: Fighting games and RPGs.

PS2 3rd Person Action games.

SNES Fighting games/2D Platformers.

Original Xboxen: FPS and Western RPGs

Xbox 360: Racing games and FPS

Dreamcast: Sports games and 3D Action titles.

Xbox Series X: Xbox One games.

NES: Platformers

Playstation: JRPGs, Survival horror

Weirdly, the 360 and PS3 were JRPG machines for me.

Since then, 360 and PC have been so multifunctional for me I don't really associate them with any specific genres I've also gotten a lot more piecemeal with my gaming and mood/time dependent. Up to and including the GameCube/Xbox I mostly played locally with others so getting a consensus for games was a lot more narrow, which makes sense to having a more focused genre association with those older systems.

Atari 2600/Colecovision/all that 70s stuff: Maze games and shooting galleries

C64: Shoot em ups and sports games

Amiga/Atari ST (both systems largely had the same games): Top down shooters and first person dungeon crawlers

NES: Ultima inspired JRPGs and "action adventure" games

SNES: Run-and-gun and a new brand of JRPGs

Mega Drive/Genesis: Military sims and experimental RTS games

Saturn: Experimental 3D platformers and puzzle games

PS1: Vehicular combat (gonna combine car combat, air combat and tank combat here) and tactical strategy games

N64: Racing and party games

Dreamcast: Whatever Shenmue was and 3D platformers with fixed cameras

Xbox: FPS and open world games

PS2: Sci-fi shooters (both first and third person), retro inspired shoot em ups and open world games

Gamecube: Survival horror and poor Mario games

Wii: Sidescrolling platformers and shooting gallery oriented FPS games

PS3: Third person RPGs and military shooters

360: Cover based shooters and driving games

WiiU: Mario Maker (that's a genre, I think?) and isometric 3D platform/action games.

PS4: Mascot/character action games with ~~serious narrative focus~~ and souls-likes

XONE: Live games and fighting games

I don't think the PS5 and Series X have been out long enough to form any kind of identity yet, I barely know of any games for either system.

360 also saw a JRPGs for me as well. I remember trying to burn through a bunch of them with Blockbuster rentals.

Blue Dragon especially caught me despite its 3 discs and ridiculous difficulty.

Playstations: Everything

Lost Odyssey is still one of the greatest I've ever played

Basically JRPGs for every PlayStation, because there's a fuck-ton of them, and Persona is the reason why I bother with Sony consoles and handhelds these days.

NES: Sports (Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Punch-Out, Stadium Events)

SNES: Trashy licensed platformers (in retrospect it would be JRPGs, but in real life it was a lot of Tom & Jerrys, Lion Kings and Marvel-adjacent clones of better things I found later via emulators)

N64: 3D generally (Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Blast Corps, Body Harvest)

PSX: JRPGs (Legend of Dragoon, Final Fantasy VII-IX, Xenogears, Chrono Cross)

Dreamcast: 2K Sports

PS2: GRAND. THEFT. AUTO. (plus EA Sports/Big, though just looking at this system it feels so diverse in what was successful and popular, easily my most diverse time for playing games)

PS3: NBA 2K series (I barely played games during this time, getting really into film history and being a music critic didn't leave me a lot of time for anything in games I had to pay close attention to, so I mostly just played MyGM and Ranked Online games of 2K on mute when I did game)

PS4: Prestige third person dramas (a proper fusion of the outside interests I developed during the PS3 era and the hobby I grew up pursuing most that's left me really excited about the future of games)
