Get that Danni O'Dwyer, I love them Irish lady girl types!

Doesn't matter to me one way or another, I'll be happy with anyone who isn't insufferable. Right now I like all of the GB regulars, and I'd like to keep it that way.

How many good editors are there to add to the staff even in general, nevermind out of a pool of female editors. But then again I barely follow video game news in general and don't read any other sites, so maybe I'm just out of touch with the larger video-game editorial community.

EDIT: I mean that's what I'm assuming this thread is about, because it's honestly backwards-ass retarded to assume that there would be a problem hiring someone because that person happened to be a woman.

It would be an added bonus if the person they picked happened to be a woman, yes, but I'm more interested in them picking a good person in general. I hope they're a complete unknown.

I'd love to see woman join the Giantbomb crew

This.

I'm not sure hiring a female for the sole reason of having one is the right move.

But also this.

Watching Drew, Alexis and Ian create Sims of the GB crew this morning reminded me of what a sausage fest this place is. There are plenty of qualified ladies writing about games right now. Some diversity would be nice.

To sum up, I wouldn't want it if something like this is the reason why. I'd much rather have another guy that fits in the group and is extremely knowledgeable about videogames and preferably has a somewhat different taste than the current staff members, then trading any of those aspects for the sake of having a different gender. That said, if they can find a girl like that, then hell yeah. If they find a guy and girl both equal then I think I might actually prefer girl.

that's not impossible, the GB guys are very hospitable to any lady that comes onto the site. But I'm reminded of Carrie Gouskos from the Gamespot days and he constant complains how narrow minded the audience was when she would write an article on brain activity. Maybe the time is right for her to return?

I'm not against it per se, but I think I would prefer it to remain all boys for a variety of reasons. Then again, I can't really make a full judgment until I see who the girl is and what her personality is like, as well as whether she melds well with the crews sense of comedy.

I don't think anyone's trying to force anything here. Obviously personality is the most pivotal element.

Also: "[...]not because of what's between their legs." Blaarhrhrheeerhrheeeerhhreeehrhr. :/

Just look at the post above you quoting me. People think that someone's personality is based entirely on their gender, race or religion, rather than their life experiences and upbringing....

Also it's usually a penis or a vagina that's between someone's legs, I don't see why you're so disgusted.

I assume you're referring to my comment where I said "gender is a huge part of personality" and not "someone's personality is based entirely on their gender, race or religion". Of course life experience and upbringing are major factors in shaping someone's personality, but these too are affected by gender.

I think it would be great.

That being said, it would also probably be a nightmare for a lot of different reasons - if you thought people hated Patrick a little too much, you probably couldn't fathom the amount and type of nastiness a woman would get thrown at her.

To be fair... both those things are pretty gross.

And, in seriousness I would say gender does have an effect on personality since it affects your life experiences. Plus... hormones.

I always enjoyed hearing Nikole Zivalich when she would guest on Weekend Confirmed. She's half my age but absurdly knowledgeable as well as deeply passionate about video games. She's also comfortable on camera and understands how to speak in cadence with a natural conversation. This is the stuff that truly matters to me.

The real problem is there's a special magic between all the folks at Giant Bomb. It's going to be rough for anyone to join the crew and win total favor with the audience, whatever sex they are.

Anybody else find issue with the "I'd rather they hire somebody who's qualified than hire a quota woman" rhetoric? (It's in there, even if I haven't worded it well.) Isn't there a ton of implicit othering in this logic?

It would be great, as long as it's not a "token female" type of deal (and I trust GB to be above that). The comments and forums would certainly suck for a while (remember the chat every time Sara Lima showed up?), but it would even out.

We had Sara Lima from Comic Vine on Whiskey Media Happy Hours for a long time. It worked well, except for the part where she could feel a certain segment of the community trying to touch her through their screens and had to quit (I'm pretty sure that's how that went down).

She moved to New York, seemingly left for another job afterwards.

I've said a few times now that a female personality might be a good addition to GB. For some female gaming journalist, I like Keza Macdonald formally of IGN, Tara Long from Destructoid and Rev3Games is also cool.

I feel like it's unfortunate that this is even a question that should be asked. All anyone should care about with a new staff member is if they mix well with the others while also offering a different perspective on things. With those things in place, there shouldn't be problems but I get that the internet often copes badly with change. If the new staff member was a woman, just use Patrick as an example and then add a gallon of anti-female scorn on top and you can imagine the outcome. It's unfortunate, but in the end there's always that minority of the internet that's gonna exist and be weirdly persistent. Luckily, I'm confident that most duders on Giant Bomb are pretty sensible and accepting.

Women are usually too clean and would clash with the disheveled nature that permeates Giant Bomb. She'd have to have really messy hair or never wear make-up or something, just to fit in.

That's a shitty comparison! Ghosts and Dragons actually exist on the internet, women don't.

edit: Anyone who fits in with the rest of the site and is good in front of a camera would be fine in my view whether male / female / transgender / French / everything in between.

"Primped" might be a better fit for what he was going for than clean. I expect the GB guys are reasonably clean most of the time, they're just really dressed down with their hair doing whatever, toss in a dash of perspiration, energy drinks, and taco bell, and there you go~

Female video game reporters tend to be more immaculately groomed than the average woman in day-to-day life. I especially notice it in terms of the shiny-shiny hair, without a strand ever out of place. It just irks me that the presence of a camera is enforcing this anti-realism standard, even in the frontier of internet media. (For as obnoxious as a lot of people seemed to find Lena Dunham, I appreciate that she's willing to go for it and be sloppy and anti-attractive on screen.)

The problem with this is that there are very few people in the video game journalism community that would be a fit for Giant Bomb, and out of those people I would guess there is zero women. It would be great if they could get a lady on the team, but I just don't think it's possible given what GB is looking for and what that community is like these days.

Obviously the criteria are mostly to be both enthusiastic and knowledgeable about games and the industry... but the secret criteria are to be willing to shoot the shit on the bombcast and UPF about stuff like woodworking, obscure fast food options, and formula one. Anyone who can handle the randomness (and is up for bringing even more of it to the office) will be a good pick...be it duder or duder(ette).

Any lady joining Giant Bomb would have to pass the Carrie Gouskos on-screen test, she has a good blend of intelligence, wit and charisma. She as well as the other E3 and GDC GB streams regulars aren't on Giant Bomb nearly as much as I'd like. Having said that, if you can make me laugh and teach me something new at the same time (like the current GB staff) I don't care if it's a woman or not.

Alright while we are here and there's no point in starting a new thread (I don't mean to jack this thread OP): What if GB hired anyone besides a white person of Irish descent? I ask the same question: would a person with a radically different background be a good fit for GB? Why or why not?

Hell I'm not even talking about someone out of this world either, I'm just talking about someone who say...loved anime...or something like that...how would that affect the dynamic of the crew and the GB community?
