I just spent some time on Metacritic where I saw Catherine being advertised and I wondered how many guys are getting that game with no idea of what they are truly buying. It made me think of my first game purchase where I wandered from shelf to shelf and ended up buying Starcraft mostly because the picture of a Protoss on the front was slightly textured. I lucked out that time and these days I know almost too much about a game by the time I buy it, all because of the internet. My questions is, what is the most uninformed and random game purchase you have made and how did it turn out? It also counts if you got something crazy from a well meaning family member with no idea about video games.

Hmm, not sure.  Besides when I used to buy games when I was a kid because of the cover art and the franchises they were from, I guess Spider-Man 3.  I didn't even know it was out, or hear about how it was quite inferior to Spider-Man 2 (which is still one of my favorite games of all time) and when I saw it I immediately bought it because of how much I loved Spider-Man 2.  I ended up pretty much hating it.

That's a good question.  It's been so long since I saw a video game cover and thought, "that looks cool, I'll try that."

...Breath of Fire IV!  Probably not the single most uninformed purchase on my part, but it's the only one I can think of right now.

@g6065: From the game's page: "Also, before the final boss battle the game's villains perform a musical number." - This actually sounds pretty great.

Final Fantasy XIII. I got it cus I didnt think X was that bad- I enjoyed it and thought itd be a fun change of pace and something new.

I was wrong.

So as not to just have bad ones I want to add- I impulse games a lot. Sometimes you get a gem. Back in the early 90s that was how I found Monkey Island, Full Throttle and several others that are now nostalgic joys.

Actually, I take that back. Full Throttle was pretty heavily regarded at the time- being pretty critically acclaimed as I recall. Monkey Island, though, I knew nothing about when I first bought it.

Star Wars: Empire at War. Came into the store, saw a cool looking Star Wars cover with AT-ATs on it, bought a copy. Didn't even know it was an RTS.

Just about all my Steam purchases. Though the Star Wars pack in particular. I didn't even know what half the games were, I just knew that the whole thing was 50 dollars and it included Dark Forces

In recent memory Culdcept Saga, saw it used for 15 one day and figured why not. Plenty fun.

But aside from the odd used steal of a game I see, I don't often buy a game without knowing exactly what I'm getting, or at least a good idea.

Buying an Atari Jaguar on its launch day. Paid extra to make sure I had it ASAP. Horrible failure of a system, though Tempest 2000 was a decent game. I also ended up buying its cd attachment for it as well, but that was out of morbid curiousity. And I got it very cheap.

Avatar Legends on XBLA. Thought it would be good since it had a decent rating and was a way to waste the last of my MSPoints.  Regretting it now.

It's been a long time since I picked up a game without having any prior knowledge about it.  When I was a kid, I bought EarthWorld for the Atari 2600 and absolutely hated it.  It had a pretty cool cover and it came with a comic, so that was enough to win my money, but when I played it, I was completely disappointed by the game and felt foolish for spending my money on it.  I learned a lesson that day to investigate games before I buy them.  I still buy a clunker occasionally, but when I do, I know that it wasn't for lack of preparation.

Couldn't pick one. When I was younger, I think most of my purchases were based on walking around the Stop-N-Save and picking a cool looking box. Did that pretty much every other week, one game for me, one for my brother. Good times.

There were a few. I bought Superman 64 because I liked cartoon but that wasn't completely random. No the most blind purchase ever was Slave Zero. Yeah that game is kinda shitty but I bought it for my Dreamcast because I was at the store and didn't have the Raymans so I told my dad to buy that instead. Do I regret it? Kinda but it's not Superman 64.

Life Force Salamander. The brain boss freaked me out and the first level overall was unlike anything I'd experienced before, the music felt ominous and almost depressing. The EU version runs slightly slower and so does the music, that must've been a part of it.

First game I was scared of, guess that's worth something. The upbeat tunes of the second stage were a welcome surprise.

Shit... I do that all the time, usually cheap games. Tokyo Beat Down comes to mind. I think it was $5? It's a not very good but glad played it side scrolling beat-em-up.

Large parts of it reminded me of Yakuza for some reason.

I don't know if it's the MOST recent because when you're twisting off cabbage for used DS games, who keeps track?

Star Wars : Galaxies I bought it thinking cool another Star Wars game and went home and spent an hour installing, then discovered it was an MMORPG I didnt even know what that was at the time. I was more ashamed I hadnt even glanced at the box.

Can't think of anything really. I usually stay pretty informed about any game that might even remotely interest me. I guess Resonance of Fate. I was at a guys place to buy another game and he said he was selling that too for dirt cheap so I said sure what the hell even though I had never heard of it. It's still sitting on my shelf and I have yet to touch yet.

Hmmmm... probably getting a PSP. Got it on the day it launched... I should have waited to see how things panned out.

EDIT: Oh game purchase. Probably the censored version of a doom-clone called Blood, which I got from Odd Jobs (a local junk store that went out business a few years ago)

I bought Starsiege TRIBES because it had an awesome box. And it lived up to every promise the box made.

I don't mean the cover art, I mean the part where the box folded out into a in-game screenshot of an immense battlefield with people running all around.
