Surprised... and very pleased, to see MGS3 winning. Its by far my favourite in the series. It has both the best gameplay and the best story of the series.

Thats a very complete list although its called Subsitence, not Substance. MGS2 was Substance only.

Metal Gear Solid 3 for me as that game has some of the best boss fights I have ever faced.  Nothing can ever top the one hour showdown I had with The End and finally taking his Mosin Nogant.

The MGS3 special edition was called Subsistence.

But anywho, I think the objectively correct answers are MGS and MGS4, but I can respect that they were all good for their times.

I'll go with MGS.

MGS4 is my personal favorite.

I would vote for MGS3, but I thought that the story and bosses were kind of weak in the early portions.

Never got into the first MGS when it came out. I did thoroughly enjoy MGS2, though. Then I went back and had a good time with Twin Snakes. I've never really found MGS3 to be very good, though, and without a PS3, I haven't tried MGS4 yet.

Snake Eater does a lot of smart things but is still way too talky and stupid, even if somewhat less stupid than the other three Solid games.

Metal Gear 1, 2, and the GBC game are all very good and know when to shut up. I vote Metal Gear.

Snake Eater, it was a combination of feeling fully in control of the mechanics and the gameplay working out in a way that made sense to me.
For example in 2 you could do the whole "pop out from cover to shoot" but you never actually wanted to fight, you'd just cartwheel into them then go run and hide.

That said I haven't gotten through 4 as I have no PS3.

Honestly, you're not missing much. I beat it in a single weekend on a friend's PS3. It seems shorter because its divided into acts and the story is almost shockingly simple. Rather than telling a unique story, it just seems devoted to tying up the loose ends left after MGS2. And the answers are really lame too, usually overelying on nanomachines to explain everything. The gameplay is the best on a mechanical level but its the least fun to play. With the improved shooting controls, Snake doesn't even need to rely on stealth. You can just shoot your way through. The bosses aren't creative and are a chore to fight in contrast to MGS3s consistently fantastic bosses. Without a shadow of a doubt, MGS4 is the worst non-spin off game of the Solid series. Its still a good game, just instantly forgettable compared to the rest.

Oh and fuck Octacon's disc swap joke. Swapping a DVD takes less than a minute. Installing acts can add up to twenty minutes. Retard.

Say what you will about MGS, but the way in which threw so many winks and nods to previous games was amazing. It's weird to describe, but it felt like they were saying "welcome home, thanks for all the memories."

The naming of the bosses and the Shadow Moses level alone are both well worth the price of admission. Shadow Moses even made me shed a tear.

I really want to play it, I just don't have a ps3 I'm pretty sure I would enjoy it especially the set pieces and trademark craziness and just the spectacle of the story being wrapped up. However I really like MGS2 because of how inexplicably batshit crazy it was, looking closer at loose ends in mgs2 seems like a bad idea because anyway you explain it will probably be pretty lame. The last thing I would want to do is shoot myself through the game, I love the stealth mechanics and trial and error gameplay, I always try to avoid guards completely and if I am forced to take one out I will always tranq them. The open battlefields and more shooter style gameplay is seriously off putting to me, because that's the last way I would want to play that game. Install's sound like a pain.

I think what it did best is help the player establish a relationship with Snake and by using extensive flashbacks he made you think how much shit he has gone through so when the end came it completely fucked you up.  If your bitterness comes from the fact that the gameplay became more TPS and less stealthy  i totally understand you.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is easily the best Metal Gear ever made followed by in my opinion the original Metal Gear Solid.  I should know considering I have played every metal gear game ever made except for the ones on the phones and ac!d.  You should have condensed your list considerably.  You don't need two entries for what is really just Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops for example.

If Snake would have blown his brains out  at the end of MGS4 it may have been the greatest game of all time, but the damn flight line wedding and the nice tidy ending ruined the game for me.

Peace Walker. Takes the best parts from MGS3 and 4 and blends them together into something exquisite. Shame no one played it cause it was on the PSP since it's pretty much MGS5.

Metal Gear Solid 3 for me as well.  Second would be Metal Gear Solid PS1, and then the Substance release of Metal Gear Solid 2.  Love the VR Missions in the latter.  OH and Metal Gear Solid VR Missions/Integral.  My love for the series is heavily focused on the gameplay, and then the story.

Metal Gear Solid, it had the best voice acting out of all of the games.

Liquid Snake: So the Snake's finally come out of his hole? Are you ready now... my brother?
Solid Snake: Why are you calling me brother? Who the hell are you?
Liquid Snake: I'm YOU. I'm your shadow.
Solid Snake: What?
Liquid Snake: Ask the father that you killed. I'll send you to hell to meet him.

Snake Eater, not just because it's the best in the franchise, and not just because it's the most emotionally affecting, but also because it remains virtually untouched by the awful, awful things Metal Gear Solid IV did to the plotline.

I tried getting into the series around 2 and 3, but it never clicked with me. If/when they do a HD super collection where they bundle them all together I will probably pick it up when it drops to $20 and give it one more shot to hook me.
