@development: It would be esoteric like real case solving. Every object in the game would be intractable to some degree (can be looked at closer and inspected and collected as evidence). The entire map is open from the get go, and you are given very little to go by when a case opportunity presents itself, which means you have to think critically and decide where you should be going. It wouldn't be hand holdy like most point and click adventures are (and wouldn't, simply, be a point and click game). You are given a journal that allows you to input text notes for future reference. And the reason it would be investigative journalism and not a straight up detective story is because it broadens what a case can be; a case wouldn't have to be rooted in criminal proceedings. It could be any number of things that would make for a good story (when a case is solved, the story to come out of it will serve as a statistics sheet for how you accomplished the case. The story can turn out differently if you approached the case from a different angle). It also makes what the character is doing more morally ambiguous.
It would also feature some really dumb/arcane qualities as well. EX: there's a jump button that's completely useless (makes you jump like an average person, which is to say not very well) except for a few circumstances. You have a gun and 1 clip, which can be shot at anytime, but is only necessary for certain sequences (meaning you would make it harder for yourself if you waste those bullets inbetween cases and arent near a place to get more). I also envision a secret case that is present throughout the duration of the game that would take community effort to solve.
Really though, the most important thing is making everything highly interactable, which can be accomplished more easily when its a 2d side scroller, and making case solving a rewarding and challenging process (which few have come close to accomplishing).
Think of it like LA noire having a baby with the metagame from Fez, the sensibilities of a Metal Gear Solid game having a baby with a Deus Ex style hub based world (but the different 'worlds' can be accessed at anytime), and those 2 babies having another baby, creating this.
It's kind of a ridiculous idea that takes from a lot of conflicting influences, but I really think it could work. Too bad I don't know shit about making a game, or else I would be working night and day to make this idea become reality.
