I like games. This thread will get shot down
What Kind Of Gamer Are You?
I honestly think labels like this are ridiculous. Ok, so Retro, Import and Pro at least mean something, but hardcore and casual have so many different definitions that I facepalm everytime they are brought up in discussion.
I honestly feel that the hardcore label isn't governed by the type of games one plays, although that seems to be the most common definition, that Killzone 2 or Gears of War are more 'hardcore' than Animal Crossing. But from another standpoint, you could argue all three are casual simply because they aim for a huge audience and are massively popular with the general public.
Terms hardcore/casual should be defined by a large combination of things in my opinion, but mostly, how wide a range of games you play and how much attention you pay to the industry at large. Not how many hours you can pour into Gears of War or Counter Strike: Source.
I have no idea what the OP considers it, but yeah normally it would mean someone who makes money (or even a full blown living) playing video games.
Considering the vast majority of my gaming purchases are made on Play-Asia.com and I'm learning Japanese just so I can play Japanese games, I'm gonna go with import gamer.
But that's really just a subset of hardcore. You don't see casual gamers importing a Japanese 360 just so they can play a single game, y'know?
The same can be said for retro gamer and pro gamer. I can't see the casual gamer of today going back to 8-bit games, and to be a professional gamer you have to be pretty damn hardcore.
I'm an entheusiast. I read the news, keep up with events, I don't rant about subcultures in gaming or really care about anyone else's tastes.
Casual, I was real hardcore about it when I was younger but now its just a minor hobby. Gaming has become so standardized and corporate that everything feels the same and everyone is out to get more money. All the magic that came from playing video games is gone now, nothing gaming has to offer today can match the feeling of sheer joy that came from owning ones friends in a GoldenEye64 match, the jingle that the PS1 made when loading up a game, or the habitual blowing on cartridges or tugging of power cables to get the Sega Genesis to work that became second nature. Back then every game was something new, now every game is basically is a rehash of 4 or 5 games that get passed off as new.
Horny Gamer
Rumble Roses, Onechanbara and Heavenly Sword are 'gems' in my collection.
not really...
When I play games I prefer to be a roleplayer, which is why RPG is my favourite type of game. Once I've completed the roleplaying experience, I tend to turn around and be a powergamer for a second playthrough.
I play games because it's part of my job to understand them, so I play a lot. I'm guessing I'd be a hardcore gamer, though I agree with others here that those labels are a bit black&white.
You make a good point.
While every company is out for a profit, this trend of churning out mediocre/abysmal games with no heart or soul to thnem is pretty bad.
