What 'older' game are you playing right now?

I am someone who revisits old classics a lot. I rather replay something near and dear to my heart than play something entirely new I don't feel strongly about. I figure some people might be the same way. By 'older' for this thread I just mean 'didn't release this year'.

I am currently playing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The story is quite bland, the world looks colorful, but every single NPC has no personality whatsoever, but the actual combat and leveling are a ton of fun. Good game if you're looking to scratch a certain RPG itch. I'm also playing The Secret World here and there, which is a fantastic MMO. Unfortunately no one is available to play it with me and it only stays fun by yourself for so long.

I'm very curious to hear what everyone else is playing.

Trying to get through Kingdom Hearts. There is a lot to like about it but the jumping is such a bummer. I know that sounds like a lame compliant but it's that bad.

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons.

Does Binding of Isaac: Rebirth count as an older title? Because I'm always playing that.

Skyrim and Quake!

I only ever played the first bit of Quake, and hearing that it gets into medieval Lovecraftian stuff has me excited to play more. Started another playthrough of Skyrim, this time with a bunch of mods. Also sporadically playing through Super Mario World again, because why not. Really eyeing up Invisible Inc. though. Might put everything on hold and dive into that.

I finished Wind Waker not too long ago for the first time and I started playing Twilight Princess right after that. I got to the Gerudo Desert in Twilight Princess and decided that was a good point to shelve it for a week or two. I was starting to feel a little Zelda-fatigued and wanted to play something else. That something else has been Tokyo Mirage Sessions, which isn't new but it's an SMT game through-and-through so a lot of its turn-based combat quirks feel like twists on old familiar gameplay (and by "old familiar gameplay" I mean "yet another SMT game that basically uses a different spin on Nocturne's combat and since Nocturne's combat is basically the JRPG version of crack I am OK with that")

I've also had Mass Effect on the mind lately. I only finished Mass Effect 3 once, when it came out, and I've been thinking about buying the PC version of it and all the DLC and playing through it. I don't know if I'll be able to get that done after finishing Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Twilight Princess and before Deus Ex Mankind Divided comes out, though, so that may just wind up being something I think about doing for a little while and then move on.

God, that game is so good. It's a shame no one's tried to iterate on the formula because it had a ton of potential.

@justin258: Be warned! That was my idea but none of the Mass Effect games are playable with a controller on PC. You can get mods to get it to work, but it does feel sketchy. I'd recommend just hooking up your Xbox again. That's what I did.

Lately I've been playing the Genesis version of Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, and I found it to be a surprisingly solid 2D platformer.

Also played Blaster Master 2 and that game is baaad. Controls and level design are awful. Giving up on ever beating that one.

I have been messing around with some of the arcade archives games on PS4. Gradius is a phenomenal shooter with great music and Rygar is...okay. Double Dragon has satisfying if simplistic combat. I love playing old arcade games but these are pretty overpriced, which is frustrating because at $3 I would probably buy all of them, but for $8 I can only justify the ones I am really going to put some time into.

Frankly Gradius and it's sequels are the only ones I feel super comfortable with because they're such great games that hold up perfectly. Just as fun to play now as in the 80s.

I generally don't revisit games, my backlog is huge enough and what I want to play is expansive enough it doesn't usually fit with my schedule.

I am playing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen for the third time because it's now on PC and I wanted to play it with mods (boy is it still fantastic and it looks simply fantastic with ENB lighting, no letterboxing and 60fps). I can't remember the last time I replayed a game of that size/scope. Ocarina of Time might be the only one where I've done that with a 60 hour game or so when it came out on the Master Quest disk

That being said I do play a dozen runs of Mega Man 2 every year without save states. Never beat it, but I also never put in enough effort to really pull it off either. That's the only one I routinely touch every year.

But more often I'll play older games for the first time like Super mario Land 2, never had a Gameboy. Old game but new to me.

I'm trying a three heart challenge for the original Legend of Zelda, but I'm doing it on the 3DS VC, so I have the benefit of save states. I'm currently stuck getting the whistle in Level 5, as the two rooms of 6 blue Darknuts are really difficult with a wooden sword and only 8 bombs.

"Older": GTAV, Soma and Borderlands: THC (ayyy lmao, etc.).

Older: The Tex Murphy franchise.

You can always guarantee that there's a 90s PC game or twelve in my rotation.

Also, anyone playing BL2 on PS4 and somewhere around level 21 or wanting to start a new character in either game? I keep hearing how BL is so much better in multiplayer, but the idea of jumping into random pubs just sounds hellish. Rather play with fellow duders that I can converse with civilly.

Edit: That goes for GTAV as well. I'm curious about giving the MP another try.

I just spent the last month or so playing through The Witcher 3 and all of its DLC, though I'd really hesitate to call it old in any way. I guess I've been messing around with Sid Meier's Colonization here and there. That's a fun game!

@cronus42: I always think about doing this sort of stuff but I'm scared that I'll burn out on that type of game before I get to actually play the new release. I was thinking of getting Gravity Rush on PS4 but the next one is coming out ..sometime.. so I just decided to wait on that. I usually just wait on the newest version of whatever before playing the old one.

I've been going through the old Tom Clancy series.

Ghost Recon (plus Desert Siege & Island Thunder) - I think this game and it's expansions hold up really well. It plays like ARMA lite but it still manages to feel tactical and fun. Highly recomend checking it out if you haven't already.

Rainbow Six 3 - Really wanted to like this game but i can't do it. In a day and age where Door Kickers exists, this series feels kind of unnecessary to go back to. I never did the planning aspect of this game because it felt really clunky, so i would just load the pre defined plan, get everyone to hold position, and try to awkwardly juggle between the three teams. Another old SWAT related game that i liked, and was a little similar, was SWAT 3. So it's possible that, having played a better variation of room planning and a better variation, at least from what i remember, of the first person aspects, Rainbow Six didn't have a chance at this point.

Rainbow Six: Lockdown - The interface got smoother but they didn't really do anything to utilize that interface, i played a little bit and it just felt like an uninspired first person shooter.

Rainbow Six: Vegas - There was one point where i felt like i did a "tactics" in the early stages, but after that the game turned into a trigger spawning shooting gallery and i got bored.

@humanity: Yeah that's the gist I'm getting this time through. I remember not liking it that much when it came out cause I found it stupid that a big daddy could get its ass handed to it by splicers. I've been able to suspend my disbelief this time.

@sikdude: that is the worst thing about it luckily. I felt the exact same way - the narrative disconnect of being a Big Daddy while the game still plays as if you're just a regular guy is pretty immersion breaking. Thankfully everything else is pretty good. Fun plasmids, neat drill upgrades and some cool late game moments. It's also interesting to have Bioshock be all about this Ayn Randish ideal of living entirely for ones self benefit while Bioshock 2 flips it and enacts this quasi socialist "there is no self" approach through Sofia Lamb.

Sid Meier's Covert Action.

It's really ahead of its time in a lot of ways, and I think it's ripe for a reboot, what with the fashion for rogue-like elements and procedural generation. It's got a strong mix of gameplay styles that all fit in well with the theme, and even though it doesn't take long to see most of the different puzzle pieces, it doesn't diminish the fun of cracking a case. An update in the vein of an Invisible Inc or even Alpha Protocol would be really fun, I think.

I've played through half of Mass Effect 1 and all of Mass Effect 2 on PC, so I was already aware of that, and that's fine with me.

As far as controller support goes, there's an .ini you can edit somewhere that enables it, though it's not fully implemented so there are some UI problems you'll have to deal with. I played it like this for some time but eventually just started playing with a KB/M.

According to this Kotaku article, there's an easy-to-install mod that fully enables controller support in the PC version of Mass Effect 2.

If EA were to announce an Xbox One/PS4 collection of all three games with all of the DLC included, then I'd definitely buy it and play through all of them again on my Xbox One (provided the framerate was stable).

EDIT: Also, a lot of the games people are mentioning aren't really all that old. When I hear "old games", I think "anything that came out before the PS3/360 generation". I'll admit that was ten years ago, but something that came out a few years ago isn't "old".

@zevvion: I've been itching to get back into The Secret World myself lately, as it has one of my favorite game worlds I've ever visited. However, I have some serious issues with the combat, so I'm always hesitant to jump back in. If it had more compelling gameplay, I never would have stopped playing it since launch.

I've instead been playing a bunch of FFXIV (for my MMO fix) and way too much Marvel Heroes lately to have the time. XIV is a recurring addiction at this point; I'll jump in for a few months here and there when I have some free time. Marvel Heroes was a bit of a surprise. That's another game I dabble in here and there, but it typically never hooks me for long. This time, however, I can't seem to stop playing, putting in something like 70 hours over the last two weeks.
