Been switching between sessions of Skies of Arcadia (Damn it! Why haven't they ported this?!) and Front Mission 2 (Still have no idea what they're saying since never came to US.)
What 'older' game are you playing right now?
I bought Resident Evil 4 for the...wanna say 3rd time and am now playing it on PC...man, the first half of that game is so good, it makes the second half bearable...
I'm debating whether I'll get the RE4 re-release when it comes to Xbone. I've already played the game to death (ha!) on GameCube and Wii. It's still one of my absolute favourite games ever, but do I really need to play it again with the new shiny?
EVERYthing in the village and thereafter is golden...RIGHT up until you get to the castle and the jerkasses with crossbows show up...it's not a BAD game at that point, but basically everything after the Village Chief boss fight isn't a horror game anymore...
I have been going through some games that my friends bought for me. One is a collection of Intellivision games for original Xbox. One is a collection of Midway arcade games, and one is a collection of Tecmo arcade games. Also I have been playing the original Gran Turismo game.
Phantasy Star IV: Man, this game is beast. Really holds up well too, totally could pass as a "new retro" release today. The difficulty is perfect, not omg hard but not a walk in the park either.
Rogue Galaxy: Downloaded this day one it was released as a PS2 Classic on PS4...have been playing it since, huge amount of content and it's one of the best PS2 JRPGs you'll play. OCD people be warned though, there is almost too many things to accomplish in this game. I've picked a more chill playthrough style, since I have enough stress in my life already!
Sonic 2: No save states or cheats...straight up old school, I'm stuck on that damn air ship. :x And when I say "stuck", got there once, made some progress then hit a progress wall with some of the platforming, nerd raged and haven't revisited it since. Need to get that monkey off my back!
I also play a lot of older games for just a few minutes, get bored and move on to something else.
I discovered Metal Gear Scanlon about a month ago, and have been replaying each game in the series as I watch Drew do the same, leaving the cut scene watching to Dan and drew of course ha ha. Only issue is i only have 3 on my 3ds, which is far less capable of a port than the ps3 version was.
@herrheimlich: There is an English patch available for Front Mission 2. Not everything is in English (believe it is like 85% or so) but their is a translatiin guide for everything else that is still in Japanese included with the patch. You can pick that up over at Rom Hacking Dot Net.
I revisited my town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf last night. Is that game old enough to count as 'older'?
EVERYthing in the village and thereafter is golden...RIGHT up until you get to the castle and the jerkasses with crossbows show up...it's not a BAD game at that point, but basically everything after the Village Chief boss fight isn't a horror game anymore...
It does get better/more horrific when you get to the labs and encounter the Regenerators, but yeah, after the village it definitely becomes more of an action game, and the story turns into pure '80s action movie schlock. Which I kind of enjoy, but I would have preferred a more straight horror experience.
PRECISELY. I wanted to say "everything after you meet Ashley" but honestly? I think people give that character too much shit. As far as escort missions go, RE4's is probably the LEAST egregious MAYBE in all of videogames.
@mems1224: I'm playing through Human Revolution for the 1st time right now. Such a fascinating game. There's a lot weirdness to it, but I am really enjoying it.
Just played through all of Pokemon Crystal over the past couple of days, I grew up obsessed with Pokemon and then fell off around Black/White. Gen 2 still my favorite easily.
The fight with Blue and then Red to cap it off both still feel really significant as a fan of those original games, such cool moments.
Finished Catherine, really liked it but hated the way the last two puzzle sections had so much randomness in them. To the point where the game even said pure skill isn't enough you're going to need some luck.
Playing Ni no Kuni now, liking it so far, not sure how I feel about the weird free control combat but I haven't done very much of it at all yet. I am enjoying imagining a tiny Rhod Gilbert as Drippy though.
Always wanted to get into fighting games (but boy do I suck at them) so have been spending some time this summer trying to get into killer instinct and samurai Shodown 2.
Just played a bit of hitman absolution, it seems alright but i can see why people who like the new one hated this one. Even if you can redo missions it seems counter intuitive and the score seems to make you want to play a specific way.
@forkboy: How long did it take you to get it to work? I hear there are a lot of problems with Game for Windows Live and Rockstar Social Club.
Under 10 minutes. The Social Club stuff is totally borked but you just have to download GFWL seperately and then at the RSC launch choose offline mode or words to that effect. A pain in the arse but on the whole probably worth it.
I'm almost always playing older games, so at the moment I have Halo 5, Destiny, and NFS: Most Wanted (2010) on the burners. Halo 5 is great when it's working and so frustrating when it's not, Destiny is a really solid FPS-RPG, and Most Wanted is kind of a disappointing Paradise-like.
I'm playing through Deus Ex: Human Revolution right now. It is fantastic. My biggest complaint are the boss fights, which fly in the face of every other thing that is designed in the game.
@mambogator: Unfortunately no. I'm playing through the original release because it was free with xbox live gold. I knew about the boss fights from reviews I have read, so I've been keeping hold of a shotgun and assault rifle just for the boss fights. It sucks that I have to waste praxis points on inventory or armor since I've been ghosting through the entire game, but it's been worth it.
Kingdom Hearts II on PS2. Might as well keep it going.
It sucks that I have to waste praxis points on inventory or armor since I've been ghosting through the entire game...
Eh. Though obsessive exploring, hacking, LIMB Clinics and side quests, you'll have more Praxis points that you'll know what to do with sooner rather than later since you're going non lethal.
I bought Anno 2205 last week after a surprise Steam sale, so I've been playing lots of that. I remember being intrigued by Austin Walker's Quick Look from last year, but the price seemed a bit high, but I finally decided to try it.
Playing the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate right now. Still pretty early on in the game but so far I'm liking most of the technical changes they made. I'll see how it holds up.
Also replaying Shadow of Mordor. Holy crap the the gameplay is still solid. Definitely wished they'd spent more time developing the story elements.
Finished all the single missions and the campaigns in Door Kickers, really good game. Lots of content. Play until you've had you're fill than come back and play the rest.
Finished Spec Ops: The Line. This game gets mentioned alot for it's story so i wanted to get around to playing it and after finishing it, i'm pretty disappointing. The story maybe interesting compared to other modern military shooters but the gameplay was so dull that i couldn't care less about any of it. It was just a chore that i pushed myself through to see the ending, which didn't do much for me. Maybe it's the fact that i already knew how it was going to play out in the end.
In between my overwatch and Evolve: stage 2 sessions, I've been messing with Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 again. It's not as strange as you'd thinking playing those games in tandem considering they are very similar and very different at the same time. But I do wanna duds my efforts on one or the other and cannot decide which to focus first
Recently picked up a PS2 component cable and have been playing GTA: San Andreas. For a twelve-year-old open world game it still holds up incredibly well visually, and it's always a blast to just roam around and fuck shit up in a tank or attack chopper.
I've been playing around with the Link to the Past randomizer (Pick it up here - bring your own emulator) - (if this is against the GB forum rules please feel free to remove? It's a program that generates a randomly seeded rom)
Knowing this game inside and out already, it brings a new challenge and legit excitement when it gets mixed up like this. On one run, the starting chest (Usually the lamp) ended up being the Fire Rod. I also happened across a bunch of heart pieces, the hammer, shovel, hookshot, Quake medallion, Pegasus boots, Power glove and 2 bottles all before getting to the 2nd light world palace.
The downside is, now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to get into the sand palace (2nd palace) without the book (There was a 20 rupee in its place on the bookshelf...). I'm also stuck trying to find the mirror as well, since the old man also only gave me 20 rupees...
I have searched for every damn accessible chest and could not find these items. Run ruined.
I may be overlooking something, but then again, I can just re-roll and start over. I'd like to see if I can complete this run though, somehow.
I am about 4 to 5 hours into Final Fantasy VI, and just got to Mobilz with Cyan and Sabin.
It hasn't hit me yet as the masterpiece everyone says it is, but the scene in Doma where Kefka poisons the water is brutal. That combined with Cyan watching his family leave on the Phantom Train have been the best story beats so far.
Going solo through Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2. Really fun game despite the dead online component (non-existent in EU). Makes me wish Capcom would revisit this take on the franchise with puzzles, exploration and co-op mode.
I have a stack of games I've never put any time into, and I'm trying to go back and look at some of these old Japan only RPGs I have laying around. At the moment I'm playing Emerald Dragon for the PC-Engine and I'm really enjoying it. It's a real looker compared to a lot of the RPGs on the system, the story and characters are interesting enough and very importantly it allows you to save the game at any time (and also to set your walk speed as a menu option). The combat system is nothing else if not novel; it's a turn based system where you have free movement around the battlefield, and moving and attacking drain your meter. It almost feels like a very prototypical Valkyria Chronicles, although the enemy AI isn't particularly clever and there's not a whole lot of strategy going on. At this point I'm about 4 hours in and I'll probably stick with it.
Also I love how all these old RPGs come with physical maps
