I have a gamecube, ps3, advance, genesis, laptop. And 360(shared w/ friend.) My ps3 is not backwards compatible, and I hate that Sony did that.

Start by considering "what games would I want on a DS? What games would I want on a PSP?" and so on

DS all of the way. So many great games on that thing. PSP has a few but in my opinion, not enough to warrant the price tag.

Atari Lynx. Done.

Seriously though, depends on what style of gamer you are. If you're even remotely a Metal Gear fanboy (I am, so I'm not trying to offend anyone) I'd go with a PSP cause the Metal Gear stuff is enough reason to get it. If you just want a bunch of fun pick up and play stuff get a DS. I've got both and by time percentage I've used my DS way more.

Nintendo 64

No, I'm serious. Of all my "retro" consoles (which counts around 30 I think) it gets the most play. Super Mario 64 is still just as playable as it was upon release, Mari Kart 64 is my preffered entry, Starfox 64 always pleases alone or in a cloud, Turok was at one point a good game, 1080 snowboarding is excellent fun even for non-sports gamers like myself, Super Smash Bros. is very different from the sequels (and still awesome).

There are more, but the point is the N64 is great alone and in a crowd. hey, it was the first mainstream console to have 4 controller ports out of the box!

get one!
