Today at 2PM Eastern Time, Epic is going to do a live stream on Twitch which you can watch right here. http://www.Twitch.tv/UnrealEngine

They have said this is about the "Future of Unreal Tournament" I am guessing they might just update the graphics and not make many changes so as to get a game out the door quickly that is using Unreal Engine 4.

I am super excited and wanted to see if any other fans of UT had thoughts on what they hope to see from it and which was their favorite UT game.

Unreal Tournament 3 was the most fun I had with the game and never got into UT2003/4, it felt like the focus on vehicles got away from what made UT awesome, the fast paced up close gun action. But I honesly think that UT3 or 1999 version would be perfect just updated in Unreal Engine 4. I just really fucking hope this doesn't have anything to do with mobile.

But do you guys want more guns? Bigger maps? Another awesome campaign?

Honestly if they can make an old-school arena-style Deathmatch free to play, done right (ie like TF2 or Dota 2), I'll be more than satisfied. The last good "arena" type shooters I played and enjoyed were Halo 3 and UT2k4. Its just been way too long

I would like to see something that I couldn't possibly think of.

I would love to see one of the OGs (Doom, Quake, Unreal, Wolf) do the "next thing" like all the things Wolfenstein: ET (proabably mostly credited to CoD?) did last round.

Visually, I would like it to go pretty much in the exact opposite direction that they took with UT3... and I hope it has better level design. Can we please skip the fucking trend of putting RPG progression bullshit in everything, too? Also, I would appreciate it if there aren't any paid map packs splitting the community. Apart from that, surprise me.

Yeah I also want to see something I can't even think of from them. I'm not a Unreal Tournament fan so I'm just looking for anything that might get me interested.

Really i just want to see a system that makes sharing user made mods super easy, a platform for people to create the experimental mods i used to play all the time in the UT2k4 days.

Less Gears influence. More Quake influence.

EDIT: Long answer: I want a fast paced shooter with responsive guns, high mobility, no retarded unlocks and imaginative/unique weapons. A game only needs one shotgun.

Basically, I wish I could have as much fun with a new shooter as I do with Quake 3:Arena or UT2k4 and not just halfassedly feel like playing CoD just because its as close as we get nowadays.

Also fuck unlock systems, put all the weapons on the map or give me every option from the start.

I know I just said "something I can't think of" :P but I wanna blurt this out anyways:

UT would be perfect grounds for the "next-gen"(sorry) of user generated content. *EXPENSIVE & RISKY* Introduce an unprecedented level of curation and promotion staff that filters through and works with hobbyists to create a game that is not only overflowing with content but also creates a competitive creator community.

The world's best players playing in a tournament devised by the world's best creators - but really well thought out with trial tourneys, surprise announcements, etc. Could be a great (or disastrous) blend of big money tech and indie/hobby passion.

Tweak the little things to make it its own game and add a terrible, contrived story mode but shoot for the wealth of content they put in 2k4 10 years ago. As long as it doesn't have a two weapon limit and it has the Shock Rifle I'll give it a chance.

Like Jeff said on the podcast. Mods.

And that it isn't f2p. Which kind of comes with it having a good modding community because you can't have crazy balance mods if it screws with monetization. They wouldn't allow it.

  1. 1. Free to Play (if there is anyone who can do it right, it's Epic)
  2. Facing Worlds
  3. The sames sort of spectator tools provided by Dota 2, and an overall eye towards tournament competition. (Tournament is in the name afterall)

@slaps2: Oh shit, didn't even think of that. I guess they could go together. It'd be a tricky thing to do though and in the end I'd prefer to pay for the game upfront.

Not Free To Play.... just free...

so.... ad supported? Maybe this is just a way for a bunch of people to use the Unreal 4 Engine?

They have to be trying to make money on this, right?

As long as server admins can admin their servers through a web browser like the good old days then that's a step in the right direction.

The twitch chat for this announcement has been fantastic.

We are making another unreal tournament!

"YESSSS! Epic is awesome! This is amazing!

It's going to be free!

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

To be clear, it's not free to play, it's just free.

"What."

Sounds like they're going to be making money by taking a cut of whatever is sold through their marketplace for the game.

@grantheaslip: funny you mention Deathball, recently i saw a live stream of that mod's successor called Supraball which is free to play. I'm hoping GB picks up on it.

listening to the live stream now, sounds like modders can put their material on the Unreal Engine Marketplace and decide if they want to sell it or not which is the business model i expected them to do.

lol, they're probably scraping endless threads like this one just like Microsoft did for the One announcement :P

A Twitter algorithm no doubt holds the fate this franchise.

@slaps2: You were right. Epic did F2P right.

This model sounds incredible. Not only is the product free (with no microtransactions), but they're actually creating the opportunity for the community to make money if they mod the game. Simply brilliant. Giving away the game and allowing their users to profit off of it...

Wow.

I'm in.

Can we all please make this the unofficial name for this game.

Edit: Maybe Open Source Tournament 2014. (OST2K4)

No word on it being ad supported (I doubt it), but it seems like they're trying to make money by taking a cut when people sell mods on the marketplace they create for the game.

I hope this works out for them because it seems, on paper at least, to be a really cool business model: Giving away the base game for free, and encouraging the mod community by making the game as easy to mod as possible and allowing modders to make some money.

Very cool idea. I do hope the base game will be a complete game though. Not that they expect modders to pick up the slack.

UT3 was never up to par with Battlefield 2 when it was released. It promised BIG BIG BIG scale combat, but then just blah.... Like that was unpolished mess of crap added atop of other crap. Why was there a faint button, it did nothing in a game where you get run over by things. UT2004 really got it right, but..... UT3 just slapped together without understanding anything. I'd love just more polish, more understanding how things worked. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I still can't get over they made the characters glow to tell what team they were on, the first time we started to learn about the UE3 blurriness. You spend time designing your character, and he's a blurry mess.

I really loved the 2D mod from UT3, but outside of that the mod scene was underwhelming even when UE3 became the industry standard engine.

It's advertising for the new Unreal engine, essentially. It doesn't have to charge money, the game itself is part of the marketing effort.

Just a solid free to play shooter would be really great. I know there's TF2, but it's like they go out of their way to make none of the classes fun in that game.
