@wemibelec90: I suspect that very few releases from modern series will get me hyped from now on. Like most have said, I'm just not built like that anymore. Besides that, I've always tried to not get caught up in the hype of a release other than its date, even before losing my childlike wonder for games. Not because I was worried it would be disappointing, but because it makes the date seem centuries away. For example, I can't imagine how far away Bloodborne would feel if I had watched the 2-hour game footage Oroboros put out.
However, I think I'll always get hyped for series I know from my youth. Metal Gear, Persona, Suda51's creations - and to a certain extent - Pokemon, are some which will always get a rise from me, I think. So, the last justified hype train was probably Metal Gear Rising. Not to hate on Ground Zeroes, but I didn't get hyped because the information surrounding that game pre-release made me unsure what to think. I ended up thinking it was perfectly fine.
The hype train I'm on right now for MGSV and Persona 5 is probably on a runaway. I guess it's because when a standalone game I have no inherent interest in ends up being good, it's just a nice surprise. Like Shadow of Mordor. Or at least, I hope it's as good as I think from watching other people play; I still have to buy a PS4. I loved the PS2 action games, but nothing else from that era fills me with confidence.
But when a game that I have expectations for ends up being great, like a Metal Gear Rising or a Persona 4 Golden, it feels like so much more. It sounds corny, but it makes me feel like a kid again, who can lose himself in the magic of games. Rather than something like Farcry 3, which though I very much enjoy playing in the way I expect a cat enjoys "playing" with a freshly caught rat, I STILL haven't beaten it and am using it as a perpetual open-world murder simulator. It just feels like it's missing something.
I know it's safer to just assume average levels of quality - or better, nothing - but I can't help hoping Metal Gear and Persona are as good as my expectations. Because when they are, they feel like they're worth about THREE games.
