I purposely don't get hyped for anything anymore. It's better to remain skeptical about everything (like Alien) and get surprised by how good it may be (Alien again) or how bad it may be (The Evil Within). It also makes those moments when I'm not expecting anything from a game but it ends up being awesome, like Legend of Grimrock 2, that much sweeter. I do look forward to games, sure, but I expect very little from almost all of them just to be safe.

Also, I just don't think that aspect of my personality is very strong anymore. I'm too busy doing other stuff to pine away after a game release; after all, I usually still have dozens of other games to play in the meantime!

Probably Mass Effect 2. I don't really get hyped up anymore. Certainly not like I used to.

@wemibelec90: Yeah, I try not to get too hyped, but sometimes it just happens. For example, I am so hyped about Binding of Isaac: Rebirth at the moment. I just can't help it.
Also, this thread seems really messed up and it doesn't appear in the forum page =/

When was the last time that you were really hyped about a game that met (or exceeded) your expectations?

For me, I was really looking forward to Legend of Grimrock 2, which I really ended up loving. Before that, it might have been BioShock Infinite. Most other games that I had been looking forward to fell a bit flat for me - I haven't even finished Alien: Isolation and I was looking forward to it since it was first announced =/

MOD EDIT: Hopefully this doesn't explode...

Fallout: New Vegas was the last one for me. Fallout 3 was a very, very good game and played it to death, but I had some issues with the writing, characters, and world building it attempted to build off on from the older games. Exploring the world and the moment to moment gameplay was great, but the other stuff I like about Fallout was missing. The characters mostly felt weak, not too many meaningful choices, didn't care at all for the Enclave coming back, and I get Jeff Gertsmann like rage at the broken steel ending retcon. New Vegas brought the gameplay of Fallout 3 to bear, but brought the tone and things I came to like about Fallout, the writing, story, characters were all top notch. It suffered from technical issues and the world didn't have the "wow" factor of exploring it like Fallout 3 did, but it exceeded my expectations of what I wanted.

Fallout is really the only thing that gets me to buy a ticket on the hype train these days. I still get excited about lots of games, but I'm not a teenager anymore, and with my considerable back log, waiting for a game is really no longer a thing. Unless I'm keeping an eye on a game, I usually forget all about said game until it's a week out from release.

I don't think hype trains are ever justified, it's just allowing yourself to get so excited for something that it can't ever live up to those expectations.

That said, I got so excited for Grand Theft Auto 5 that I remember thinking "Fuck, if this isn't literally one of the best games ever made I might be really disappointed, I've let myself get that caught up with excitement". But you know what? Fuck if that game didn't deliver and then some.

Otherwise I just try to keep a level head and see if I'm interested in a product, if I am then that's that and I'll just check in with it closer to release to see if anything's changed to make me no longer interested.

At the moment I'm on the Hyper Light Drifter train. Absolutely loved the playable preview and am convinced enough that the final game (whatever it may be when it's feature-complete) will be something I'll play again and again for a long while.

Weird post...

I'd say Fire Emblem Awakening was the last one. Or maybe Shovel Knight. Oh! And a Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds!

I don't get hyped often, but usually when I do, it pays off.

I think the last game I got really hyped for was Dragon Age: Origins. And it fully lived up to my expectations and then some. Which, of course, was the reason I pre-ordered the second one (yes I was hyped for that too) , which turned out to be a pretty big disappointment. After that I have been very careful about getting too excited for a new game.

So yeah, Bioware ruined my hype :(

@mrfizzy: Yeah, that was the last one for me as well. I want the new Assassins Creed but have no real expectations. I am in possession of 3 first class hype train tickets to Witcher 3 station, MKX-ing, and a final destination at No Mans Sky.

The most justified hype train I've been on must have been Red Dead Redemption, I even bought a magazine that had it on the cover - still can't imagine what I was thinking! That game exceeded my high expectations. The riding into Mexico:

Oh man! Good times.

The last justified one was probably with The Last of Us. I think I'm too good at riding hype trains - my expectations are often excessive.

Also: Time Paradox!

Skyrim. I was so hyped for that one and it delivered. Even though I was playing on crappy pc with sub 30 frames per second it was still best experience I had in a long while. Before that ME 2. I hope Witcher 3 delivers also. Even if it gets bad reviews and be buggy as hell I probably like it.

Does a game that is not out count? Because The Phantom Pain would be my current answer.

If serious, probably The Evil Within. I knew what the game was going to be, and was not disappointed at all with how it came out.

Does anything live up to the hype? I hate to say it, but hype is a marketing to get you to buy the game. It's super annoying when the gaming media does it. remember the hype of Titanfall? A little bit of euphoria had them singing the praises of that game... and where is it now?

Just don't buy the hype. It isn't real.

GTAV, and before that Red Dead. Rockstar don't disappoint. I've enjoyed other games more than these, but I can't remember being very hyped about them before they came out.

@wemibelec90: I suspect that very few releases from modern series will get me hyped from now on. Like most have said, I'm just not built like that anymore. Besides that, I've always tried to not get caught up in the hype of a release other than its date, even before losing my childlike wonder for games. Not because I was worried it would be disappointing, but because it makes the date seem centuries away. For example, I can't imagine how far away Bloodborne would feel if I had watched the 2-hour game footage Oroboros put out.

However, I think I'll always get hyped for series I know from my youth. Metal Gear, Persona, Suda51's creations - and to a certain extent - Pokemon, are some which will always get a rise from me, I think. So, the last justified hype train was probably Metal Gear Rising. Not to hate on Ground Zeroes, but I didn't get hyped because the information surrounding that game pre-release made me unsure what to think. I ended up thinking it was perfectly fine.

The hype train I'm on right now for MGSV and Persona 5 is probably on a runaway. I guess it's because when a standalone game I have no inherent interest in ends up being good, it's just a nice surprise. Like Shadow of Mordor. Or at least, I hope it's as good as I think from watching other people play; I still have to buy a PS4. I loved the PS2 action games, but nothing else from that era fills me with confidence.

But when a game that I have expectations for ends up being great, like a Metal Gear Rising or a Persona 4 Golden, it feels like so much more. It sounds corny, but it makes me feel like a kid again, who can lose himself in the magic of games. Rather than something like Farcry 3, which though I very much enjoy playing in the way I expect a cat enjoys "playing" with a freshly caught rat, I STILL haven't beaten it and am using it as a perpetual open-world murder simulator. It just feels like it's missing something.

I know it's safer to just assume average levels of quality - or better, nothing - but I can't help hoping Metal Gear and Persona are as good as my expectations. Because when they are, they feel like they're worth about THREE games.

"Justified"? That's a good question. I am trying to think back to the games I got hyped for versus the games I truly enjoyed. Two of my favorite games played this year were Bioshock Infinite (PC) and Diablo 3 (PC & PS4). I didn't buy either until long after release. For reasons I'm not quite sure, I never got into Bioshock 1 (PC) and Diablo 2 was a long time ago. When these sequels came around, I was interested but not enough to plunk down any cash. A year or two later, I did take the plunge and loved every minute.

Borderlands 2 (PS3) might be the last time I was on board and felt satisfied by the experience. Well, no now that I think about it. I played the original 3 times to completion as the Siren, but I was sorely disappointed in the changes they made to Maya from Lilith. It wasn't until Gage (the Mechcromancer) character came out was I back into it. She was supposed the be the "girl friend mode" character, but she provided something that was missing in Maya, the runaway-button. When I picked it up on the PC (2nd copy), I was able to manipulate Maya's skill tree better by just ignoring her main power. So, I guess in the long run, Borderlands 2 was justified for me, but not right away.

Anyway, the real answer is probably something like Dragon Age Origins (PC) or Skyrim (PC) which have both been in my Top 5 games of all time since release. Also, they are among the most played games I have according to Steam.

The last time was probably either Pokemon Y (kind of jumped back into the series with that game) or before that, Saints Row: The Third.

I don't really hype games up anymore to be honest. My best experiences came from games I never expected anything from. The Darkness 2, DmC: Devil May Cry, Red Dead Redemption, Metro 2033/Last Light, etc.

But on the flip side, for games I have been excited for like Titanfall or the various Assassin's Creed games, I rarely find myself disappointed as I get exactly what I bargained for, if not more.

If a hype train actually ends up being justified it's completely circumstantial. There's so much hype being manufactured that some of it is bound to stick. The Last of Us comes to mind but that barely left the station until the actual content was out and available to the public. I remember Naughty Dog being pretty selective on what they showed before they released it. There weren't lofty promises or unrealistic graphical showcases but they showed some strong stuff to at least show people that they were making a thing.

I think the gaming media is the worst offender for peddling illegitimate hype. Even over the publishers themselves. The way many outlets talk about games before they are released is frankly gross to me now. I used to eat it up but now I just see it as dishonest.

I'm not sure I remember. I guess Halo 3. Got to the store a couple hours before midnight and by the time it was 12 the line wrapped around the front of the building into the parking lot. I've stood in line a couple other times since that have had turnouts, but nothing like that.

I'm not sure if this counts, but I was pretty hyped up about a new Monolith game which almost noone seemed interested in before launch - Shadow of Mordor. I ended up not really liking it, but the general consensus seems to be that it's a GOTY contender ... so I guess my hype was justified?

Was totally in love with the Penumbra games and had great difficulty waiting for their "next great horror game"

To be fair I'm not sure how much of a hype train it was and not just me being excited...
