Here's a nerdy dilemma; you want to know about the things you like and care about, but do you really want to seem like a crazy person over trivial information and things? While I'm certainly not crazy and I am sure a majority of gaming enthusiast have greater knowledge of these things in general, I still realized the other day that some days, I just know too much for my own good. Or maybe not, but enough to make my surrounding raise an eyebrow.

Here are some examples;

Just today I was listening to a backlog of Nerdist podcasts wherein one of the guys says "I heard today that the Xbox 360 is turning 10 years this year" and the other responds "Yeah, they're also doing a revamp of the UI because of that to make it look more windows phone esque" I'm paraphrasing some wording but that was the gist of it. I had to pause the podcast and go "WHAT!?" It's been 6 years since it was released back in 2005. It's not 2015. Yet.

Or how about the newspaper having a poll on their website asking what was ones favorite 80s gaming console and they included the SNES released in the early 90s.

Time paradox aside, how about sitting down for an episode of Entourage only to see Turtle playing Gears (or whatever, I don't exactly recall) and seeing the goddamn controller blinking indicating it has no connection to any goddamn Xbox.

Not to mention just casual conversations with people at work and the misconceptions they have about games in general.

But hey, that's life.

I dont bother correcting people, as nothing is more annoying than people that constantly correct you over trivial nonsense.

yep, horrible stuff that you realize that bother you.

there was a commercial for video game design, like 5 years ago on g4 that i remember. it was a voice over for a girl saying hey what are you doing? it sounded horrible that she didn't talk. two guys have ps2 that are going crazy, twitching with the hands. they say they are twicking the graphics. there is like 80's video game sounds. one of them says man i can't believe we got a job playing video games for a living. it was pretty funny commercial.

I correct smart people. dumb people should be allowed to express themselves as much as possible, how else will we know they are tarded?

I don't bother making corrections unless they impact someone's statement in a significant/meaningful way.

Although I don't know much about console history and what not so yeah..

Thats not really knowing too much, that's just knowing your hobby, i could tell you a thousand stories about how the shop signs in la noire are not viable in the real world. or how the doughnut falling in crysys 2 is could not happen like that, because i work with signs every day.

That's just laziness on the part of the Director.

Or ignorance. Either way it doesn't bother me less because of that.

@Swoxx: It would actually bother me more because as a Director he shouldn't be putting things into his scenes if he doesn't know how they work.

It's funny that you guys remembered that moment, because I was just thinking about it the other day. A completely unimportant, but odd oversight.

Its silly, but bothering to correct them is even worse.

But, in my head I already murdered them five times over.
I'm supposed to understand their shit, they can at least try to pretend mine.

I don't remember what podcast it was, but awhile back I was listening to one where this chick was a guest and she kept referring to games and consoles from as long ago as 2000 as "next gen/current gen". It drove me fucking nuts, even though it shouldn't have (well, I guess maybe it should have because you expect that people on game shows who are on there to talk about games and supposedly know a lot about games would know about how long the current generation of games has been around).

And no, I wouldn't say you should feel bad about it. There's something wonderful about disproportionate apoplectic rage - just as long as long as you're aware of your over-the-top anger over something fairly trivial and you're not turning into one of those guys who throws his computer over their fifth story balcony because they're having a nerd-fit. :)

I know what your talking about. I have knowledge over things I shouldn't.

FOR EXAMPLE.

The French Revolution

Redwood Trees

Slender Man

The Beatles

Im American. How is it that I know every single detail about the French Revolution but if you asked me 2 years ago who killed Hitler my response would have been "Winston Church Hill"?

Redwood trees I get. They are so huge and interesting... I think I want to live in one when I get older.

Slender Man scares me.

The Beatles were beasts. I know everything about these niggas.

I wouldn't say that's knowing too much. There are people who know more than others, and then there are people who are prepared to listen to the more knowledgeable. I'd like to consider myself one of the people who takes the time to stop and listen. I have an interest in Nazi Germany and the USSR in particular, to the point where I do have an understanding of the subject beyond some of the people I know. I don't consider myself as knowing too much, nor do I consider myself as being of above-average intellect. To me, I'm just me, and that's pretty average. I have interests in other fields as well but the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany are the two that spring to mind most readily for me as things I tend to notice points about. Games are a fairly obvious option: surely we're all here because of an above-average understanding of videogames and their concepts? I'd imagine people like Marino with stupidly high Wiki Points are among the most knowledgeable on videogames.

Sometimes on here, I get the feeling that people take me for someone that takes things seriously. I think I need to work on my writing some more. Or maybe I spur serious discussions from things obviously not entirely serious. Sure, these things can bug me, but come on.. it's not like I'm going to bother writing to the newspaper and get nerd-huffy about it. It's just funny though how much you sometimes react to inaccurate statements because you possess knowledge others might not because it's not important to them. Everyone needs self awareness enough to have fun at ones own oddities. I get nerdy about certain things, and I enjoy wallowing in them. But I can gracefully handle myself socially because I know it's all in my head. Still, I do correct people when I feel it's needed because people need to know not to talk out of their asses. And then there's the entertainment medium at large containing games as background details that very often suck, but that's nothing worth bothering with because it's so far away, in a sense. I mean, that would mean you have to mail James Cameron and tell him a dirt bike doesn't have a gazillion gears.

@Prodstep: So you would prefer people walk around spreading misinformation? I've never quite understood the aversion people have towards being factually correct. If I make a statement and someone can give me a valid correction, I'm not going to throw a tantrum. I just learned something. But I suppose learning isn't for everyone.

@Beaudacious: I am sure I could get more sex from my girlfriend if I wanted to, but that wouldn't change who I am.

@Dagbiker: The hidden science of signs, that actually sounds pretty interesting.

@Branthog: If I throw my computer out my window, something messed up has happened. In fact, I am sure if my computer killed someone I knew I would probably still keep it around. I paid for this sucker. So no worries there.

Thats just shoddy journalism (lol). If they cant be bothered to find out the actual detail I don't care, no skin of my nose. The thing that I try so desperately to get over (like so many others im sure) is trying to watch and enjoy certain movies after knowing the source material. Latest example for me is watching X-men: First class, great movie but I caught myself the whole time saying stupid shit like asking why is this person doing that, that's not supposed to happen and where Iceman..blah blah blah.
