My PC needs an upgrade. I've narrowed it down to two processors but i need your help deciding which one to buy.

AMD Athlon II 2.9 GHz Quad Core
AMD Phenom II 3.0 GHz Quad Core
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5 GHz Quad Core (Q8300)

Speedy answer is appreciated.

I don't have an answer but I'm interested in what most people think is the best as well.

@GuttlessCashew: I'm getting a new motherboard with the processor because my current is an old LGA775 but it doesn't support Core 2 technology and I can't find a BIOS update for it.
@TheHBK: 940. The 955 is 3.2 GHz but is a little bit more than I'm willing to pay.

I'll go with the Phenom. Thanks for the replies people.

@Marz: Costs too much. I'm on a budget of £110 and I need to get a motherboard too. Managed to snag a Phenom II 3.0 GHz Quad for £80. Not too bad.

I'm not sure what you're smoking but the LGA775 does support Core 2 CPUs.

@ISuperGamerI: 775, not sure if it's LGA.

I have a Pentium D 3.4 GHz right now but the BIOs on my crappy motherboard don't support any form of Core 2 tech.

There is some six core amd processor, not sure if it's compatible, I haven't really researched the socket because I seriously don't care. However it's good to throw out options out there as a suggestion.

@HitmanAgent47:
I've looked into the Six-Core's and they're just above my price limit unfortunately. Most of them seem to be AM3.

I recently purchased a Phenom II that I really like, but your biggest issue is going to be motherboard compatibility. Make sure that you avoid the 940 model as it works with very few motherboards, while the 945 works with almost anything.

@Murdouken: Well, the phenom II is my next suggestion, it's at 3.0Ghz, that number is important. If your not going to overclock it, then having that high is good because it won't create bottlenecks which will limit your framerates if it's too low. Otherwise no one will overclock, when they do, they get a ton of framerates usually because they removed the bottleneck. Just get that one then.

Then again for the intel, if you do overclock, you can bring that up to like 2.8Ghz or higher on air, quad cores doesn't really go much past 3.0Ghz at all. If your not overclocking, even if intel is usually faster, at that 2.5Ghz, it's going to be not as good.
