Hello Community,

For years I have been a strictly nintendo consumer, only ever having owned nintendo consoles, mostly because growing up my parents had always refused to buy me "guy" consoles such as playstations and xboxes, because I'm a girl. (apparently, nintendo makes more female oriented games in their opinion, as if that matters?) Anyway, with the "death" of the wii for the most part I've finally decided I really want a different type of console, because I really want to play those "guy" fighting combat games I was always deprived of. What I don't know however is which console to buy because I don't really understand the pros and cons of the playstation 3 and the xbox 360, mostly because they both seem the same to me as they mostly get the same games released on them.

So, if anyone can help me out, which console is a better investment the xbox 360 or playstation 3?

Either one's a good option, really. Depends on whether you want Metal Gear Solid 4 or Nuts & Bolts. (It was the first thing that came to mind, honestly.)

My terrible non-answer would be, "Which platform are your friends playing on?" Because if I was in the same situation as you, the answer to that question would be the thing that would move me one way or the other.

Also, hold both of the controllers in your hand and see witch feels better. I honestly can't stand ps3 controllers, but the 360 controllers are amazingly comfortable for me. Others prefer ps3 controllers though.

I have both consoles and Id recommend the ps3 unless you have a lot of friends to play with on Xbox Live since thats the only reason I use mine now. They're pretty much the same but the ps3 is cheaper, has free online play and netflix (you need gold on xbox) and a blu ray player

@Velamo05: Depends on what your looking for. What kind of games do you like? RPG? , Fighting games? , Platformers? I could probably recommend more accurately if I had a idea of what you are into.

In general PS3 is considered to have the better selection of exclusive games like Uncharted , Little Big Planet etc... but often suffers on the 3rd party support with lacking ports in some cases. Although the online features are free so thats a plus.

The 360 is the machine you want if your into shooters or any of the big third party releases each year as the 360 is often the lead platform. It has better online features but its also pay 2 play for LIVE.

Get yourself a gaming laptop. It's multi purpose and with steam sales you will still be able to afford clothes.

I own both and have had the 360 for much longer than my PS3, and I still have to go with the PS3.

Free online, better exclusives, blu-ray. PS3's are much better.

PS3 is also a the best Blu Ray Player, has the better controller and better first party games.
360 has a bigger online community, a better store and games are made for 360 and then ported to PS3.
I prefer the PS3.

When it comes down to one of then, it's tough to decide, but I'd say get an xbox, unless paying for live bothers you.

In exchange you get the bigger multiplayer userbase, XBLA has a better selection than PSN, better controller, and typically the best versions of multiplatform games.

On the flip side, the retail exclusives tend to be more numerous, and are probably of a wider variety than the xbox, plus there's the blu-ray player, which is why I like to own one.

4 years ago the PS3 was the cheapest and best blu-ray player but now there are plenty of better blu-ray players out there and for much cheaper. Although, it can be argued as the best multimedia entertainment system. But as a PS3 owner whose blu-ray drive broke, don't use your PS3 for watching blu-ray movies it wears out the drives.

I buy most of my games on the 360, but I can't help but think that the PS3 is a better option if you're only just going to get one now. Sony's exclusive games are of such a high quality and most of the exclusives to XBLA eventually end up on PSN. The 360 does a bunch of online stuff better and has Gears, Halo and Forza and things, but If you never experienced them I doubt that would matter.

If shooting things in the face is the highest thing on your list of gaming needs, the 360 is the correct choice.

I prefer my PS3 but it's really due to some petty bullshit (interface, controller, etc).

Either or is fine, depending on what games you're interested in. PS3 has more and better exclusives but if you have no interest in them, I'd suggest a 360 just because you're less likely to get screwed when it comes to multiplatforms.

Get Xbox 360. Superior downloadable games and simply a better controller, imo.

What someone said earlier - get the one all your friends are on. I have both but clearly by my green name it's obvious I'd say go with the 360. I don't like paying for XBOX live and I honestly don't see many pros of that subscription fee at all but I'd still go with it.

Exclusives are getting more and more rare these days anyway. Dark Souls and Final Fantasy XIII are some solid PS3 exclusive series that ended up on 360, likewise with Mass Effect going from 360 only to PS3. Developers love money, and exclusives don't make you money.

PS3 gets a lot more RPG specific exclusives and more esoteric Japanese titles.

XBOX gets a lot of shooters.

One thing that I find a dealbreaker for MYSELF personally is the chat system on the 360 and the overall interface. Friending and partying up with people is a breeze. You can also be in a party of friends and just talk while you're all playing different games. I find that grouping up with people on the PS3 a bit more tedious.

"Guy combat fighting" games? Do you literally mean fighting games such as Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter IV, or do you just mean games with gun combat?

Playstation 3 has a bluray drive, so you can watch bluray movies with it if you want to.

That is highly debatable and a matter of personal preference, not a fact. Even moreso than "better first party games".

I suggest the Xbox 360 unless you're really into traditional RPGs, because then the PS3 would be the way to go. The Xbox Live Arcade is the main reason I say this, because there's where a lot of amazing titles have been showing up lately. The Playstation Network Store has its share of exclusive titles, but in my personal opinion, the overall quality is lower than that of the XBLA.

Besides that, it comes down to your personal preference. If you have friends that play games, do they play on the Xbox or a PS3? If you plan to play multiplayer games, does $60 a year (pro-tip if you buy a 360, never pay full price for a subscription. They are always on sale somewhere,) bother you? Have you had experience with the controllers, and if so, is there one you prefer? Will you be playing older games? The 360 has a lot of old and cheap titles, since it was the first console of this generation out, and the PS3 was still trying to find its place a year after its release.

Hope that helps. Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the responses everyone :) It really did help, after reading all these I think PS3 would be the best purchase for me at the moment because it has most of the games I want to play on it (while I want to play more action-combat style games, I can actually get through RPG and what not without excessively dying and screaming at the TV). Plus, I held my brother-in-law's 360 controller and it felt like a massive nintendo 64 controller in my hand :l the PS3 one felt much more comfortable! So thanks everyone- though now I'm much more tempted to just eventually buy both consoles :P
