Okay, I'll start out by saying I'm sorry if this has been brought up before in these forums. I'm pretty new to this site.
So anyways, I just started playing Mass Effect 2 (I know I'm late to the party) but what I noticed as soon as the story started to unfold was that the enemy was essentially insect like creatures. Now I'm no bug lover myself, but I immediately started to wonder why insects are so prevalent as enemies in video games.
The other big example of this is Starcraft. Zerg are very insect like in the way they act, to how their portrayed in the story and the units themselves.
So, what are your opinions on the buggy villains populating space and many other places in video games?
Why are insects so evil in games?
People are naturally afraid of bugs for a variety of reasons, ranging from the fact that they look about as alien from us as any living creature to the fact that it sucks when you find them in your food, and it gives designers a bunch of different but inherently related ideas to grab from. Personally, I'm fine with killing more bugs in games.
Well social insects such as ants live and die by the hive, right? Without any sense of individuality.
They're basically alien-looking communists.
Insects are sort of digusting to most ppl and you have no hesitation to squash them unless you are afraid of them.
Have you ever heard of insect politics? Insects... don't have politics. They're very... brutal. No compassion, no compromise.

It's natural to dislike them. I do love ants, though. Wouldn't shag one, but do love them.
actually you will find that the next starcraft zerg will be good. :P, maybe with a message that insects are scary and bad at first look, but after awhile they are okay, and blend in with nature... for the record i am bullshitting. But nonetheless zerg will be good next game.
