After some consideration...

and thinking back over all the games I have ever played, there is one that stands out as be-all and end-all. And that is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

While the intro section which saw you getting executed was impressive and certainly tone-setting, it was the opening to Crew Expendable that made my jaw drop. As the lightning flashes across the Blackhawk's interior, the cigar Price is smoking illuminates his face and then the moment you pull your gas mask over your face and decent via rope onto the ship... you know it's on. The way the SAS then proceed to clear out the ship, killing sleeping enemies, flashing and clearing rooms with brilliant animation just had me on the edge of my seat. Then there were the bad guys themselves, each point and set piece carefully constructed to the fullest effect.

And then of course the ship is hit by missiles and you have to haul it out of there while the ship is sinking before diving for the chopper and making the most awesome escape in a game I have ever seen.

That was just one event and here are a few others I'll care to mention -
-You get nuked in first person
-You take targets out from a gunship hundreds of feet in the air while hapless enemies get blown to bits below
-You sneak past enemies that are a foot from you in a guille suit
-You snipe so far you need to take into account the curvature of the Earth
-You absail out of a building as it blows up
-You hold a position against a battalion single handedly using explosives and a sniper rifle
-You break dogs necks

And then there was the Mile High Club.

Yes that was me in the vid, a chance for me to blow my Call of Duty trumpet and for anyone still trying to do it, this is the way. Tried and tested.

While the single player was short it was the sweetest gaming experience ever, the characters were great, the voice acting spot on, the graphics were very good and the lighting impressive all the while maintaining an eye-bleeding 60fps. Somehow the game managed to make you feel like you were there, the camera movement when you reloaded, the AI that would move so convincingly. So on and so forth.

I don't have a particular desire to play through the single player again, I felt it was more like a one-time deal. But I'm fine with that thanks to the multiplayer.

Quite simply the most finely crafted online shooter this side of Counter Strike. Impeccable. The perk system was something new and served to create situations that never happened before. The idea of sneaking into an enemy area using a UAV jammer and causing all sorts of trouble is one example. Setting up a sniping position and covering it with claymores is another. The weapons are well balanced, the modes offer up enough variation and the kill-streak actions including an air-strike and helicopter are strokes of genius. The speed at which you can load up a game and start matchmaking allows you to easily jump into a game and get shooting, and the matchmaking system itself is pretty damn good taking after Halo 3. For a gamer like myself, I want instant gratification - I don't want to grind for the sake of grinding, I don't want to wait days on end to TRAIN A SKILL (tried the EVE Online trial) and yet MW introduces RPG elements with gun upgrades and levelling in a way that doesn't make you feel inadequate early on. It's a level playing field pretty much all the way.

Modern Warfare 2

It's coming out toward the end of the year and there are a number of things I would like to see improved.

- More multiplayer maps out of the box. I don't mind the single player being as short so long as there are more maps for the multiplayer.
- REPLAY FEATURE, just like Halo 3. This is something I felt was sorely missed from 4.
- When matchmaking, give a warning before auto-joining a round in progress. I'd like to see what map is going to be played before I play it.
- Coop mode?
- Hardcore Free-for-all. And get rid of Old-School, Quake Live Beta is open now.
- Another "Mile High Club" style mission at the end of the game.
- I would like to say silenced sniper rifles, but that might pose a serious balancing issue
- Increased weapon customisation
- An actual reward for maxing out on prestige like a new gun (even a joke gun) rather than just some stupid emblem.
- A snow map might be an idea. Also a night map.
- More than just one map pack after release, and no lazy rehashes of old classics.
- In Hardcore Mode a longer waiting period for team killing. Like a whole minute so you really are going to watch who you're shooting.
- In 4, while Hardcore has no Killcam the camera still turns in the direction of the kill shot. That shouldn't happen.
-It should be even faster to get into a game. Have the option to turn off the intro screens so I don't even have to skip them after the single player has been completed or something.

I could go on about more things that only people quite into the game would appreciate but I'll leave it there. Needless to say I'm very excited about the true Call of Duty sequel. World at War feels mediocre and a step backward next to CoD4.

Keeping with CoD4

It's a Double XP weekend starting Friday until Monday. Hardcore HQ mode and Map Pack Only playlists will be available.

And by the by, I still play a lot of this game so if there are people out there in the same boat and can do UK times, feel free to add me:

Track of the Week #4

I was never a big Ramones fan, I just hadn't given them the time of day (not for any particular reason). But since getting hold of their first album there is one track I've been enjoying this week among others and that is I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

Cod4 was waaay to restrictive to enjoy more than once. And as for the multiplayer, it's just a wild success from being easily accessible to nubs whom in other similar games (GRAW, rainbow 6, counterstrike...) wouldn't have a clue what to do and would get royally wasted by the players that do know what to do

Best game... ever? I mean it's good, don't get me wrong. But in no way is it even close to being the best game ever (in my opinion, obviously) also, I highly disagree with "the weapons are all balanced..." the M16 can PWN anyone, at almost any distance. Still I did <3 the single-player, I just found that the online got really boring really fast. But, eh. Good blog post :)

I loved Call of Duty 4 but since my first console was a SNES, I find it really hard to put it up there as my fave game of all time when it has 4 generations of fantastic games to compete with in my experience - but I would say its one of the stronger outings from this generation along with the likes of Halo 3 (of which I'm sure I'll be heralded as a blind fanboy for simply regarding it highly).

Have no fear, in many respects I would agree with you. Even though I myself was not a massive fan of Halo, but I am less of a fan of COD4. Very elitist game I find.

You've gotta be kidding me...

You described 2/3 great missions of a generic war shooter. You only described the game's best moments. I could do that with any good game.

But you forgot to mention the design flaws:

1. Terrible enemy AI. They have zero intelligence. They're just turrets, they never run out of bullets.

2. Feels like a shooter gallery

3. Enemies can throw grenades with perfection, from a mile away

4. Enemies continuously respawn if you don't move further in the map to trigger an event

5. Incredibly linear level design (this is a game that sets an example of why a game being too linear can be a bad thing)

6. You know the flaw of Sonic 2D games? All you're doing is holding down the Right button, and jumping. In CoD 4, all you're doing is moving forward instead of standing still for firefights. Because enemies continually respawn and don't end if you don't progress, there's no point for any firefights. I could name at least 10 instances of this.

7. It's a ride, not a shooter relying on shooting. Even though the shooting is excellent, the game has some weird design philosophies.

Yeah agreed, I thought the first halo was awesome, but then it went downhill, imo anyways.
I`m not sure why everyone thought Cod4 is and was the shit, It didn`t seem any better of different then many of the shooters out at the time, I think Rainbow Six Vegas was a much better game.

yaaay i didn't get flamed. And vegas is full of balance issues that cod4 doesn't have, even though i prefer vegas over cod 4 as well, third person cover in an FPS will always put the defending team at a terrible advantage - you can see them ,while they can't see you. And poor map design (also present in cod4). Things like these make cod4 popular - it's simple and there isn't much to it but it did it right, if you know what i mean

Rather than saying "this other game is better" you have actually come and given some reasons why I might be mistaken! I commend you!!! And I'll address your points with how I see it differently.

1. The AI: Most of the action in CoD4 is from set pieces, the enemy AI is no where near that of say FEAR for example. But in context of the game I didn't have a problem and they weren't thaaat bad.
2. "Feels like a shooter gallery" Yeah you don't really stop shooting in that game... that was pretty awesome
3. Ok, yes, point taken - on Veteran this becomes a cosmic joke
4. Enemy respawning in this game IS A GOOD THING. It means people that play without balls - i.e. use cover the whole time and pick people off aren't going to get anywhere. The respawning encourages the player to move forward while taking care to not get shot to pieces. Makes for a more intense time.
5. On the contrary I believe CoD4 shows exactly how linearity in a game can be a good thing. The result is that Infinity Ward have laden the game with great set pieces that would never have occured in a more open environment. You see exactly what the devs wanted to you to see. For me that's part of what made CoD4 so epic.
6. You are repeating number 4. Also Sonic 2 was a great game.
7. I would say it's a ride relying on shooting.

You guys have to remember this is just my opinion - and I really can't think of  a game where I have gleamed so much enjoyment. Much of this is attributed to the multiplayer, I cannot stress that enough.

And as for the other games you bring to battle out with CoD4 I can only speak for the games I have played:

Half-Life: I loved this game, played it only 2 years ago for the first time and was blown away. Perhaps had I played it back in 1998 it would have had even more of an impact. What can I say? CoD4 had more of an impact for me.

Ocarina of Time: I am not an RPG fan. Yet I did give the game a go when I bought Windwaker on the GC...because you know... apparently that game is god-like. Yeah, it was lame I didn't go further than a couple of hours.

Rainbow Six: Vegas - This would certainly go in a top 10 of games I have enjoyed, I was playing the multiplayer as part of a clan for quite some time - but the game had some horrendous bugs and lag issues that just set the fluency of CoD4 apart by quite some distance. Also the gunplay in 4 feels so much tighter.

GTA 4: You know it was a great game and my GOTY for 2008 alongside Dead Space; I had a great time finishing it. But I think when people go on about how wonderful the story is they need to get a grip. I mean you had some fantastic charactarisation but the story wasn't "inspirational". Liberty City itself was a masterpiece and I'm not going to forget that. But at this point I'm not that bothered about TLATD, I'm just not interested. GTAIV ended with it's story, the multiplayer was/is broken. I've bought the PC version and I'm still on the same island I'm not all that driven to finish it again.

Halo 1,2,3: I see this as more of a taste thing. And I'll be specific about the multiplayer in that Halo is more old-school with weapon pickups rather than load-outs. It's set in space rather than the real-world. I could go for some H3 and enjoy myself, vehicles feel so at home in that game unlike in World at War for example. As for the single player, I thought it was a good campaign that shone when played in coop.

I never played Deus Ex, quite a few people tell me I should.

CoD4 is a pretty good game, but way too flawed to be considered the greatest of anything.
