I'll get to the point here: I don't keep my game boxes. I have a case full of discs and that is it. Rather than have shelves of around 400-ish boxes, they sit in one spot under my couch. The same applies to any movies I have as well. I'm not trying to be condescending or silly here, I honestly am curious, why do people keep the boxes their games come in?
Why do you keep the box your game comes in?

Because it looks good and gives a sense of the size of the collection, whether it be DVDs or video games. Also, it's easier to search for the one you are looking for.
Why the fuck do you get rid of the boxes? without the box there's no value or coolness to the collection.
As for keeping games in order, I keep them in the case alphabetized by console (yeah, I'm that guy), but I will say the most annoying part of the situation is shuffling the discs around every time I get something new. In regards to collecting, I don't seem them as a collection in the sense of it's something I expect to rise in value over time, I just want them around to play. I guess the generic answer to that is I'm playing the game, not the box. Thanks for the feedback, though, I know it probably sounds like an unusual question. Honestly I move far distances a lot so that's a big chunk of the motivation for doing this, but I wonder still if I'd keep the boxes if I was sticking around in one place for longer.
" Because I'm not a fucking savage, sir. That made me laugh so hard.
But seriously, because they look cool on my shelves. With everything slowing going digital (songs, books, films, games) it's nice to keep some tradition.
"Cover? You mean a case?Box? You mean a cover? It's mainly for collection and value.
"
Because it keeps them from getting scratched. Sliding discs in and out of cases scratches them to shit.

Because I'm not a caveman, and when games are in a spindle they get scratched really easily and are a pain in the ass to try and find. Also, where do you keep the CD keys if you don't have a box to keep the manual with the key on the back of it in?

" I can't sell it without the box. "It's the truth.
But if you're not looking to do that, you could always just keep them in a giant case for sake of convenience. To each their own, I suppose. Me? I'm nuts about keeping as much of it as possible. Girlfriend hates it, though. :/
I used to but that become cumbersome so what I did is take all my games and put them in a little slide out bin designed for cd's I got when I was 9. I keep the cases in storage boxes under my bed now.
It just makes your collection looks really nice, assuming you have a decent collection of video games.
I used to keep all of my PC game boxes on a shelf to show off my collection but I decided it was kind of pack-rat-ish so I tossed them. As for the cases, I feel like I could find games quicker rather than look through a cd case.
It protects the game disc at no additional cost. I don't see the point of going out and buying a CD sleeve book to do something that you can already do for free.
It's part of the thing. To me, your system is as close to having everything on a harddrive without actually having them on a harddrive as you can get. I also feel like I would disreapect my own memories if I did that. It's why I even have Suikoden Iⅈ on my shelf in a stand out fasion, I like to be able to highlight my favorites or as of late my collector's edition boxes. To me it's part of the experience, and nothing I can rationally explain.
Colectionism, safety, organization. I keep every box and the receipt for the game folded in the manual. I also like my huge collection on my shelf and, from experience, I know that even the best folder or envelope damages a CD or DVD more than being practically suspended in mid-air inside a box. Plus it is easier to find the games by looking at the side of the boxes and you don't get the temptation to store more than one disc per envelope on a folder. If you do that they scrape against each other when you turn the pages. You might as well store them face down on a table.
For one thing, I paid for the box so I am keeping it. Unlike most disposable containers, game, DVD and CD covers have value. They are considered part of the product. Plus, they have interesting box art and also hold all the manuals and other in-box materials. If I ever decide to trade, sell or give my games away to someone, they'll have more value if they have box. Finally, it's just easier for me to organize them that way.
On a side note, my sister used to keep all her CDs in a big case like the OT described and then someone broke into her home and stole the case. If they'd been in 200 individual CD cases instead of 200 in one easy to carry case that would have been more trouble for the burglar. Bulk sometimes has it's upside.
I keep the game cases to the 150 or so console games I have and about 98% 175 pc games I own are on Steam or GOG and only about a double click away to install.
- To organise and find them easily
- To keep the disc and manual protected
- Because they look cool? I like looking at the vast array of box art in my collection
- For trade-in/sale purposes. Wouldn't make sense to throw away boxes if I ever want to sell or trade-in games in the future.
- Basically I think you're a fuckin idiot.
