Why is this month (+10 days) so incredibly, ludicrously, stacked?

From May 12, 2023 through June 22 2023 we're seeing (have seen)

Tears of the Kingdom

Diablo IV

Street Fighter VI

Final Fantasy XVI

That would be a strong suite of headliners for a holiday season, let alone a seemingly random stretch of Spring/Summer. I'm old enough to remember the famous summer game drought, and that has been less of a thing recently, but this is a deluge. Street Fighter is sort of a separate thing, and Zelda has a whole console to itself, but this is still a whole lot of games during a usually somewhat quiet period.

Random? Covid delays finally ending? The result of game companies realizing that sending all their games out to fight in one quarter makes no sense? I don't know, and all these games will have long tails, but wow. That's a mind blowing lineup for someone who grew up during a time when major late spring/summer releases were pretty rare.

It's brutal out here, for sure.

Plus I'm paying the Too Much Money for early D4 on top of it all.

I bought Street Fighter 6 last night from Steam but I was hemming and hawing for a while because I just got Tears of the Kingdom which I've barely scratched the surface of that game and a friend suggested I buy Diablo IV to play with him and his wife but the price of that game here in Japan is pretty steep and with Tekken 8 coming later in the year? Man, it's never been a better time to play video games but woof, my wallet.

It's nice to be back in my old position of not having enough money or time to keep up with releases. During lockdown I almost caught up in a way and it felt kinda weird.

I'm marginally interested in FF16, it does seem like it will be a good game to at least watch happen whilst I pretend to be affecting it (I lose the thread quickly in games that fast), though I'm still not sold on the insular world-building. I don't have the money or space for a PS5 though so that's out the window for at least a few years.

TotK is at least in my wheelhouse, but I'm still burnt out on open world games and I never got the itch for Breath of the Wild like many did. Glad people are enjoying it though.

I have spent years fighting the FoMO and have (sort of) come to terms with the fact that I won't be able to play all the big games, especially not around release. I had some money left over and picked up Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun so I can enjoy that while everyone is off to Hyrule/Hell.
