Will games eventually only have multiplayer?

These days people buy some games for only the multiplayer, MW2 being a prime example. While many people also enjoy the single player, I think most people buy it for the multiplayer.

This got me thinking. Will we eventually start to see games who only have multiplayer? Will developers stop paying attention to the single player aspect of games in favour of the multiplayer? Will developers go as far as to not even make single player mode for games and just make the multiplayer mode. Because eventually the players only play the multiplayer.

Personally I don't think it will happen. I do think that some games will come out that only include multiplayer but most developers will still include the single player mode. Although the attention given to the single player mode may go down a bit.

Thoughts?

No. Wait what? That's already happening. I thought you meant single player games will disappear. In which case, no. But multiplayer only games are pretty widespread and will keep increasing in number as more and more people get into them. Just look @ the rise of the MMO market for example. That doesn't mean it's happening at the cost of single player games or anything, they're different markets.

I don't see it becoming a trend, no. But there are already more than a few games that are multiplayer only.

No, I actually bought MW2 primarily for the campaign. I wanted to know if Price and Gaz were dead. The multiplayer was a bonus, although it's not connecting for me at the moment

I don't believe single-player games will ever disappear completely. Many developers enjoy creating a storyline for others to play though and I think it would be rather difficult to tell many types of storylines through a game that was multi-player only. Developers are also aware of the fact that there are still many people, a good portion of consumers, who don't have access or choose not to play online and they would be losing a lot of profit if they made games multi-player only.

Not to mention that many multi-player games will go away simply because the servers will eventually be cut off and I think developers want people to keep playing their games years later, which could only be done through single-player at that point.

There's already less focus on single player gameplay.

There's already multiplayer only games. Warhawk and MAG come to mind.

Everything you're pondering happened a few years back. Get with the times.

You really should refine your terms to what genre multiplayer only would include: FPS, RTS, TBS, sports games. If you mean for just those types of games then maybe. Why not, if the only single-player experience they want to offer is 3-5 hours of gameplay. I remember when Medal of Honor came out. That was a single player shooter to remember. Maybe I am jaded because I just got a 55 hour single player experience in Dragon Age and so I am being cynical. I really like on-line shooters, but I can't stand playing them with random people because so many teeangers on their refuse to control their mouths and it just turns into a free for all on deathmatch and it gets really boring that no one is ever tactical....sorry i just fell asleep there thinking about it.

Um, gee I think Warhawk, Shadowrun and Battlefield 1943 can be added to the list of recent multiplayer only games out right now.  This isn't a new trend since Starsiege Tribes on the PC was a mutliplayer only experience, too if I recall.  I don't see it as becoming the norm, though.  While many people enjoy the competitive and cooperative nature of online multiplayer, there isn't too much opportunity for storytelling in these games in the current standard.  Perhaps that will change as game developers move away from just deathmatch and capture the flag, but until then I don't see it surpassing the single-player experience in overall quality.  For the Modern Warfare franchise, Infinity Ward could probably get away with a multiplayer only product.  The same is true for Halo as it was for Quake III Arena back in the day (although I think that had bots).   But, the majority of games need to build a player-to-game relationship, and that is done through a single-player experience.  If we become invested in the setting of a game, its world, then we are more likely to enjoy running around in its multiplayer afterwards.  In my opinion, good multiplayer extends the life of the game, it shouldn't replace the single-player storyline.

While a lot of people definetely enjoy games for multiplayer, you have to remember that now more than ever the chances to tell stories in a game are larger than ever. Developers like Bioware, for example, are exploring that direction with the Mass Effect series. If you ask me, I think the only way people will stop getting up in arms over violence and sex in games is if we are able to reach a point where a mainstream audience can say they got a cinema worthy story out of the game, and thus moving the industry entirely into the multiplayer realm would get it nowhere.

There have already been games with no singleplayer to speak of. Unless the multiplayer is hugely entertaining and is constantly being updated by the developers, such as Team Fortress 2, these games usually have a very short lifespan. I generally try to stay away from multiplayer only games, as I do prefer a fantastic singleplayer experience over multiplayer. As for every game becoming multiplayer only, I seriously doubt this will happen.
