I notice a lot of people got Vita systems for Christmas, so I just wanted to put this helpful note out there.
Get to know the Content Manager and learn how to back up your games if you plan on deleting them.

I made the mistake of assuming the Vita was like the PSP and the PS3 and thought that save data was saved to a seperate section.
Unfortunately, it is tied to the game itself. There may be exceptions, but most Vita only games (PS1 and PSP games don't have this issue) seem to work this way. Deleting the game from the Vita also deletes
the save data. I don't think there is a way to extract the save data. If you want to back it up. You have to back up the whole game.

I bought the first-edition bundle at launch that had an 8gb card, and was deleting games as new ones came out. Recently I went back and downloaded World Invitational and DW: Next only to find out the data I had  was gone.
Mainly bummed out about Hot Shots Golf because I probably had over 100 hours in that game, and nothing to show for it now (except the trophies, but I don't care about those).

This is my fault for assuming the Vita would fall in line with the PS3 and PSP, but I just wanted to post this to keep people from having the same problem, especially since PS+ has a ton of games, and there's no way you can keep them all on an 8gb card, much less a 4gb one. (Which is what all of those bundles came with). Think of Vita games as cartridges, once you delete the game you're throwing away the cartridge along with the save data. This is why games bought in a store create the launcher on the Vita. That's the save data. It's kind of weird actually, I don't think many of the Vita cards actually keep data on them. Just guessing though, I only have 2.

So, to summarize:

  • Downloadable Vita game data is tied to the game, if you delete the game, the save is gone as well.
  • PSP and PS1 data have their own special section on the Vita where saves are stored, they are fine.
  • If you want to move games because of space, back them up to your computer or PS3. Your save data will stay with the game.
  • It's also a lot quicker to just transfer your game back from the Computer/PS3 than it would be to redownload it from the PS Store
So there it is, hopefully this keeps someone from making the same stupid mistake I did.

You would think they would have a cloud set up for game saves, that is a bummer.

@dudy80: There is a cloud for game saves if you have PS+. The Vita stuff was broken at first but I think they've fixed it.

Made that mistake with Mutant Blobs Attack earlier this month. Then my friend said his save for Uncharted was gone, I googled it and that's when I noticed the game saves are tied to the games. We were both bummed out by it. It's a pretty dumb thing to do on Sony's part. For people without PS+, it's going to be a pain in the ass.
