Poll Would Duders be interested in a Mastodon instance? (67 votes)

Yes 45%
No 55%

I've been using Mastodon recently and I was wondering if GB Duders would be interested in doing something on Mastodon. Unless there is an instance that has already been spooled up. Is there?

Er, what's a Mastodon (aside from prehistoric ice-age elephant-like mammal)? A little context or background goes a long way, especially when posting in General Discussion forums. ;)

Everyone on Twitter is talking about moving to Mastodon or not moving to Mastodon. I’m guessing it’s just another social media platform but ppl are jumping ship because Twitter is such a cesspool? I really have no idea

It's your own hosted version of twitter. Different mastodon servers can connect to eachother. The downside is that if you host a mastodon server you are responsible for moderating the bad internet that end up on your server. Dealing w/ nazis, trolls, stalkers, hackers, law enforcement, and complying with GDPR, DMCA, NetzDG, the new proposed 1-hour anti-terrorist EU law seem like a real bummer to me. Joining an existing server with dedicated moderators seem like an easier solution.

@soulcake: I dunno, man, it's all right, although Mastodon in general is kinda hit and miss for me.

@cliffordbanes: This is a pretty good summation of what Mastodon is.

I wonder if there might be a way to use the Giant Bomb API so it would ensure Giant Bomb membership of the users. No idea if that would work but it might help keep things a little saner. Users do have to sign up for membership to each server.

Wait, so explain this to me (in "explaining something to Dan" levels), I already have an account in the .social instance, if I want to see the duders instance/timeline will I need to create another account?

@kblosnack: It depends on if the .social admins would want to share messages with the hypothetical GB instance or not. Linking different instances is optional.

If you visit mastodon.social and look at the general timeline on the right it seems to be fairly representative of the internet. Looking at it for a couple minutes I've seen people talking in

  • english
  • german
  • spanish
  • japanese
  • russian
  • french

about
  • anime
  • gundam
  • food
  • linux
  • ads for escorts
  • bitcoin
  • memes
  • furries
  • griffin mcelroy
  • dogs
  • video games
  • headphones
  • cats
  • politics
  • music

Yeah, that's a summation of the internet all right.

I'm always real late to any sort of social media thing and I almost never sign up for this stuff, so I don't know if I'll ever even know what this thing looks like. But can I take an aside for a minute? Mastodon is one of the most popular metal bands around these days. They've been on Letterman, and more than once! They had to know about this before picking a name. Why would they name their social media platform after them? You're just inviting tons of bad jokes, of which I will gladly take part. Mastodon also just doesn't sound like a social media platform name at all.

@soulcake: I suppose it's as much of an echo chamber as the Giant Bomb Forums. I guess I think of it more as Slack but less focused on business.

Mastodon is like Twitter except you can actually ban neo-nazis and harassers from an instance instead of hearing the platform owner whine that he's trying real hard to deal with the problem while not doing anything except where it might lead to seriously bad PR. On the other hand, it seems to be based off an older version of TweetDeck and the decisions by the developer that make it harder to do pile-ons and "cyberbullying" on the platform also make it harder to actually find people and certain posts unless you know specifically what you're looking for.

I think aurahack mentioned that the only way you're going to see real change on Twitter is if the R-18 artists all move en masse to the other platform, but it costs them nothing to just post on both sites and Mastodon doesn't yet have the size/stature to seriously threaten anything yet.

Having said that, I do have an account on that site as well, but I barely use it so I might be part of the problem.

I think a better question is - how many duders would use a GB instance on mastodon?

Good point. In my mind that was implied.

R-18? Does that mean under 18?
