So now I have an excuse to keep working on my Famicom collection. Here are the 12 I have so far, not to much variety considering 2 are Beat Takeshi games and 4 are Ultraman ones :p Any suggestions for some titles I should pick up?

Oh hell, Takeshi's Challenge? You're gonna be driven insane, regardless of your knowledge about the Japanese language. Oh, and two Beat Takeshi games? I'm not finding anything about a second Takeshi game. Are you sure you didn't just buy the 1990 rerelease of Takeshi's Challenge?

I own a Sharp Twin Famicom and around 115 games for it (some duplicates).....recommendations really depend on how fluent you are in Japanese.

The other is Takeshi no Sengoku Fuu-unji, a Sengoku era themed board game.  I have no idea how it plays, but somehow Taito made it after Takeshi's Challenge.

Edit:  In addition, Yie Ar Kung Fu is such a great game.

I was hoping to be the first one to point out the Beat Takeshi games, but seems to have beaten me to the punch. I've never gotten around to actually trying the second game, although given how the first game was created ironically because of Takeshi's supposed distaste for games, I suppose I owe it to myself to play it and see how he could have justified a second go-round. That being said, might I recommend you get yourself some Yoshi's Cookie? Yoshi (or Yoshi no Tamago as it's rendered in the copy you got) is an okay game and I realize you can get Cookie pretty easily in English, but I personally think Cookie is easily the superior Yoshi-starring puzzle game. I'm probably biased since Yoshi's Cookie was also the very first Famicom game I ever got, but I digress.

This is giving me some motivation to actually go out and expand my own Famicom collection while I'm actually in its native country. Those copies of Hebereke and the Digital Devil Monogatari games (I'm going to hate myself for picking them up, but everybody knows how much of a whore I am for Atlus, so...) aren't going to nab themselves, I suppose. Are you considering going into Famicom Disk System games at some point, too? That things been on my to-do list for the longest time, even if I shudder to think about how I'll actually lug it back home with me with all of the other stuff.

@Pepsiman:

Actually, Takeshi himself wasn't involved with the second game, which explains why I had such a hard time finding out what the hell it was.

You should see if you can find a copy of Gimmick while you're there.  That one seems to turn up online pretty infrequently as far as I can see, and it still commands pretty high prices, for a Famicom game anyway.

That's why I just got a Twin Famicom, it combines the two systems in one and is not much bigger than the regular Famicom.....though I would advise against getting a Famicom Disk System, its a cool novelty but there just aren't a whole lot of good games on it due to it being a borderline failed product for Nintendo....and a lot of the best games for the FDS are available in cartridge form anyways and its prone to break unless the belt was replaced with a higher quality band beforehand....also I second Yoshi's Cookie, its a much better game than Yoshi's Egg.

@Video_Game_King: That would explain things. He certainly wouldn't be the only celebrity personality here in Japan to have something like that, far from it, but I was still hoping in the back of my mind that it was him being ironic again. Alas.

@SpaceRunaway: I do like me some old-timey Sunsoft stuff. Native Japanese sources also confirm that the game still commands a pretty penny. I have a few other expensive games I'd like to add to my collection before heading back to the States, so I'll probably prioritize those, but I'll keep Gimmick in mind in the event that I come across it unexpectedly. Lord knows if there's one thing you learn quickly when it comes to game prices in Japan, it's that there's no such thing as consistency and that's usually for the better if you're willing to put in the (sometimes literal) legwork for it.

@Unknown_Pleasures: Yeah, I'm still tempted to get a Twin Famicom as well despite already owning a regular one. I know that the FDS itself doesn't have much in the way of great games, but as somebody who's already planning to get even "worse" Nintendo hardware like the Satellaview and 64DD (probably not during this trip because, well, I need money) as it is, that's ultimately not a big worry for me. I've certainly made worse console purchasing decisions in my lifetime, at least. I'm more interested in the history behind it anyway, so I'm willing to pay at least a little bit of a premium for the privilege of having it in my hands.

@Pepsiman:

From what I could tell, it was a poor NES equivalent of Mario Party or something. Certainly not the type of game that makes you do insane shit for a bare ending screen.

From a collector's standpoint, it'd be really cool to complement that with an FDS and say... Metroid or something. But as mentioned above, belt-drive problems make it impractical.

@Pepsiman: the 64DD would be a very expensive investment, to get one that actually works will cost you $500+ and the games themselves are very expensive too.....its strictly for collectors because only something like 9 games were released for it and 4 of those were mario paint games.....I mean if I had a lot of money I would get one but there are so many better game systems to buy for the money it would take to get a 64DD......at least with the FDS the price is reasonable (I got my Twin Famicom for around $150 with the belt replaced) and there are a decent number of games to play.....it just sucks because a lot of the FDS games that are actually worth owning are expensive.
