Your all time favorites : Ranked

I found this interesting link for sorting your personal list of your favorite games. The pool may be missing some of your favorite options but it's an interesting tool nonetheless. It appears to just have a user manually handling the comparisons for a quick sort algorithm? My computer science is a little rusty but I think that's right. Anyhow, here is my list.

I liked this system they made though the thread they took the list from clearly has a huge bias towards RPGs which happens to suit me quite well, but for a general comparison for all time lists it's way too limited (for instance, the only fighting games are from the Smash Bros. series - to not even include a single Street Fighter game is ridiculous).

Nevertheless I liked it enough to post my own. So as to reduce scroll space, I've split the table into 3 columns and only given the first 60 (as after that is basically meaningless). There are some glaring things on this list that I think aren't correct (and of course, as alluded to, there are many games not present) but it isn't that bad a list. Those in italics are games I don't have a solidified view on (because I haven't played enough; or for a few, even at all):

I have not played all of these, and many of my favorite games aren't in this list.

I'll just paste a chunk of what I got. It's not a bad method of doing something like that, though there is a distinct lack of TIE Fighter as an option. The top 10 though isn't a bad crack at my personal top 10 of all time.

Gamespot 10/10 reviewed Chrono Cross came in dead last for me, so that part is at least right.

I spent like an hour doing this, and abused the middle option so much that about 6 games in my top 10 were tied for second place. But Chrono Trigger was at the top, so it got that right. I'd really like to see something like this where you could plug in your own candidates.

It took me longer than the site said the max was, and then I don't even really agree with it, but oh well. I did it now, so might as well post. MGS3 is better than 2 for the record. But Journey is like the greatest game ever made so that seems ok.

I think my top 10 is pretty accurate with exception of a ton of games that were not in the running at all.

The lower I go, the more nonsensical it gets with a bunch of games that I've never even played.

My top 20 wasn't too far off from how I've personally ranked them. The top 5 are actually completely accurate.

Beyond there, it gets... questionable at best. There are games on that list I haven't played that ranked above some games I have played, which says something I suppose. I'd love to see this with a more comprehensive list of games (if I had a few hours free).

Why is this list just recent AAA games or JRPGs? Ohhhhh it's gamefaqs.

This is like a shitty version of the Elo Rater on the sports reference pages; that's a fun thing to do though. They gave me Johnny Bench vs Babe Ruth today, poor bastard never had a chance.

Ratchet and Clank 3 the easy victor, Borderlands 2 the obvious runner up.

Mine wasn't all that accurate. I was kinda speeding through it, to be fair. Somehow Oblivion ended up below Skyrim and Morrowind, which is not how I feel at all. Might've been a fuck up on my part. Having Kotor 1 and not Kotor 2 was a weird omission, since 2 would've been above 1 for me. No Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time also distorts the very top of my list since it would be in top five easily, but obviously there's a ton of games missing.

Still, my top 10 is certainly representative of how I feel to some extent. Dark Souls and Ocarina would definitely be my top two and I know for sure that MGS2 and KOTOR would be in the top 10 somewhere. I like the rest a lot, but I can't say for sure they'd be in the top 10 in a real list.

Re: What my actual list would be:

Vagrant Story is the only game on par with Super Metroid, period. Metroid Prime is worse than Starcraft but better than RE4, Witcher 3 is a tossup with RE4. Mario World, Mario 3, and Mario 64 are pretty interchangeable. Valkyrie Profile 2 is 6th. MGS3 is around 8th or 9th. Link to the Past is probably a bit better but I fail at matchup knowledge. Street Fighter 2... is oh right not on the list. FFT and The Last of Us are virtually the same game, the best two stories (aside from maybe the Witcher 3) one representing VO and one representing written language, and solid gameplay. Dark Souls II is incidentally tied with the Last of Us at around 7th or 8th. Symphony of the Night is around 10th. WoW is probably better but again matchups don't work for it. Dark Souls and Bloodborne are tied at roughly the same place, as is FFXII as it happens. DQVIII a tad worse I suppose. San Andreas is a lot better than that. DK Country 2 is not a game I would put on my list from memory but is probably the best not Mario platformer ever. MGSV is a tad better, same with Shadow of the Colossus and ME2. Fuck Tetris. Morrowind is better. Final Fantasy VI is a lot better. And we're starting to push the bounds of the list making any sense whatsoever after that. I despise Xenogears but it's probably still better than half the games on the list, figured it would have wound up at 40th or something.

It's OK up to 25. Many games missing, and I can forgive the absent Tie Fighters, Bastions, Wario Land 3s, Startopias, etc. These are forgivable since they're not as big as the other ones. But where the heck is Doom? What's going on? There's no Doom. How's that even possible?

I guess this is accurate? I don't know. No Jet Grind Radio, System Shock 2, SOCOM II, or Vagrant Story...those would definitely be up there. Doesn't really need to have FFIV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, and Tactics. Lacks a lot of PC FPS and handheld titles.

I did this last week and have the same complaint that everyone else has: the list is both completely arbitrary in its inclusions and is also lacking wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many games. I get that it's just based on the GameFAQs bracket, but it's still super disappointing. I almost wish that the person who made the site would scrape the GB wiki, or all games with a Metacritic over, say, 60, or something, but I get that it was totally a pet project that's just using an array and a sorting algorithm, and that they probably don't want to invest that much effort into it.

Also, the first time I went through it I used the middle button far too much because I figured it was going to come back around to different matchups or something, so my list was literally just the games tied at 14 different ranks. I was going through it again while purposefully never using the middle option, but over 500 battles in (more than the tool said was the max), I accidentally misclicked a couple times with battles that were going to determine my top 5 (I saw that the right had changed but I didn't notice that the left had changed to my favorite game so I was assuming it was still New Right Game vs. Previous Left Game) and it wrecked my entire bracket, so I just closed it.

I feel okay about my top ten, though it took 611 "battles" for me before it gave me the list.

Also there a missing a lot of important titles in my opinion (especially outside of the top ten), and a few too many Final Fantasy games for example (though of course there would be its based on GameFAQs bracket).

Instead of some shitty gamefaqs list someone should do this for the IMDB top 250; which tends to be relatively objective aside from the obvious recency bias.

I took 418 battles and got 10 games tied for 1st place, then a further 5 tied for 11th. I may personally have divided those games into 3 tiers instead of 2, but there were more than a few places where I couldn't pick a favorite between the two presented to me and had to use the middle choice. Symphony of the Night against Link to the Past? How can I choose only one? I can't really find fault with any of the 10 I had in first, though I would maybe move Persona 4 and Morrowind down a half notch.

Here are my top 50. I must have done something horribly wrong because FUCK SMASH BROTHERS HOW DID IT EVEN GET ON THERE. The same can be said about Minecaft. I don't think I said Minecraft was better than any game it was put up against, but there it is. I would say most of these actually are some of my favourate games of all time though. Dragon Age and Deus Ex might be higher on my actual list. I would include Max Payne 2 at the #1 spot where it belongs and I think Portal might be higher, say... number 2, tied with Team Fortress 2.

I think its lacking too many great games to really be that useful. No fighters, very few 8 and 16 bit games, no racers, no arcade games.

I ended up with Fallout NV, GTA V and SOTN from my own top ten best of all time but it was missing most of the others.

It was really interesting trying to decide between some of my favorite games of all time, because the reasons you love those games are so different it's hard to truly compare. But man, how the hell did Shovel Knight end up on the second spot on my list? It wasn't even in any of my voting battles.

This was so excruciatingly hard, it took me just under an hour to do. Also, I really tried to avoid the middle option when comparing two games I love, it just felt like a cop-out...

I suppose it's a fairly good representation of my tastes. Although, I'm sure that if I were to do this again tomorrow, the results would be shuffled around a bit. Having to chose between two games you love is incredibly difficult.

I'm happy with this list! Surprised to see how much I enjoyed Mass Effect 3 and The Walking Dead in retrospect, but the more I think about those games the more I remember how fond my experiences were while playing them.

There is a distinct lack of Jak & Daxter on this bracket...

For funsies, here's my bottom five, only including games I actually played;

Elder Scrolls games don't do a whole lot for me. I feel like BioShock: Infinite and Undertale can both get very monotonous, and just sort of left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Animal Crossing: New Leaf actually horrifies me because it started making me feel obligated to spend half an hour of my day doing boring, pointless chores. It was like a drug without any positive feelings associated with it.

That was a fun thing to do. Obviously some of my personal favourites are not included but here is my top 10.

Looks pretty okay to me.

Fun way to kill a couple minutes. Missing some of my personal favorites, (Sly 2, Dark Cloud 2, Civ 3, Burnout 3, etc.) but I have to admit I love every game on this list. Little soon to mark Splatoon, Mario Maker, or MGS5 as an all time favorite perhaps. Like to let these things rattle around in my brain and see if I still have strong feelings about them down the road.

Overall I think this did a pretty decent job of ranking my favourite games. A few points that I found interesting:

• MGS V is actually one of my favourite games of all time. I don't know if I am comfortable with calling it #2, but it MIGHT be.
• Looking at this makes me realize how much I like games this year. MGS at 2, Witcher 3 at 21, Mario Maker at 29, Bloodborne at 37... those are four games in my top 40 of all time.
• This method really fall apart after rank 50. Out of 128 titles there was a four way tie for 114 with Journey, World Ends with You, 999, and Kindgdom Hearts II; they were all ranked too high. =(

Nailed my top 5. WW , witcher 3, portal 2, the last of us , okami/shadow of the colossus

Also there are some bad video games in here .. Wow

My top 5 (with a three-way tie for second place) was reasonably accurate considering how much of a mess the list of candidates is. STOP ASKING ME ABOUT SHENMUE.

A Link to the Past would easily make my top ten, so I have no idea what the hell happened with that one. There are games ranked higher on the list that I haven't even played. Animal Crossing is higher on the list, and I don't recall voting for that even once!

Huh, what an excruciating exercise, although it could have been much worse; if Mario Kart 8 was swapped for SMK, Arkham City with Asylum, or Fire Emblem for Advance Wars 2, the top 25 might of had a shake up.

I deliberately tried to rank games in order of how much I remembered enjoying them at the time, versus how well they hold up (as a good few of them do not). Certain games like TF2 or Melee got up there based on the fact that fondly remember playing them with friends vs on their own merits.

There's a few minor screw ups (TWEWY is outstanding but not better than Dark Souls or Isaac), but this wound up pretty close to how I'd lay it out myself, if I could ever get over the crippling indecision these kind of rankings brings out in me. It took nearly 400 picks as it is, and you can see the amount of times I gave up and hit the middle button.

Ain't nothin fun about shaking thirty trees and kicking twenty weeds!

After 486 Questions, the list ended up still rather inconclusive (and as people said, some elemental games are missing...Burnout 3 would've probably made it at least to 10th place)

That said, as much as i don't like ranking favorite games (or movies, or any media), i find the result mostly agreeable, even though i feel Silent Hill 2 should maybe be ranked lower (i like the game, but still) and Walking Dead Higher (not Top 10, but still)

Well, I do know what you mean, I get bored of these games pretty quickly. I keep buying them though! I don't know what my problem is, but I keep buying them!

I did about 40% and stopped because I got bored.
