I usually look for stance specific damage on my weapons - low/mid for dual swords and kusarigma, high for axes, etc. Some form of elemental damage or lifesteal on a weapon is also nice to have. I have a kusarigama right now that gives me +100 life when I kill an enemy using a grapple, which is super nice.
For armor, I like items that reduce my dodge cost. Also anything that heals me in some way. The most common one is healing on Amrita gain. That helps you conserve herbs and also allows you to use those soul stones you pick you pick up as a poor mans herb since every time you pop one you'll get a little heal.
For charms, I usually keep several around with different resistances.
@lawgamer: Kusarigama high stance is so good though! It makes any fight against human enemies trivial.
I've never seen the allure of it, outside of the strong attack counter-weight toss for the extreme range. I'm not running a Dex/Ninja build and it consumes a ridiculous amount of ki in high stance.
Life recovery and ki reduction, have yet to see an element damage weapon besides a poison spear i crafted. Increase drop rates are good too but not a priority.
