This blog will obviously have some spoilers for Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. So if you haven't beaten these games yet, I would recommend you not to read it.

I have been really, really engrossed in to Dragon Age 2 lately. I got the game as soon as it came out, and I am already in my 3rd game. There are a lot of hateful discussions going on regarding DA2--mostly regarding the change in direction from Dragon Age: Origins to DA2. While I agree with some of the complaints, to me, DA2 is a great game mostly because of two things:

No Caption Provided

1. Streamlined Quests
2. Awesome Battles

Streamlined Quests
You may call it  "dumbed down", but I really don't like running with my companions for longer periods of time just to find out quests or important plot locations. The world in DA:O was epic. One could say that a single location like "Orzhammar" had more variety than the whole DA2 game. But then again, running through that location, keeping "tab" pressed down all the time for discovering nugs, treasures and NPC who'd talk to you became a chore. This became more prevalent in multiple playthroughs. The first time was a joy of discovery, the 9th time it became just a chore. I just wanted to "get to the action", and things like the above made my life difficult.

However, in Dragon Age 2, I can just click on a location in the map and know which quests are available there. Also, I can pace out the game by completing different parts of different quests without following any sequence. The same could be done in DA:O, too, but each location was so vast that quest hopping didn't make much sense. While in Denerim, you'd want to complete all the quests in Denerim...no matter how similar or boring they got. In DA2, it is a lot more easier to have a 100% completion, and grinding can also be done in a nicer and more interesting manner

Awesome Battles
The new mage is cool that it makes me never want to go back to playing a mage in DA:O. While the DA:O mage would only use his/her staff as a ranged weapon, DA2 mages use it just like Gandalf the white and hits any melee range enemy with it like a quarterstaff. The battle animations are a lot more nicer, albeit inspired from the likes of Devil May Cry. Apart from the mages, rogues also got a facelift and backstabbing now looks cool--almost like the teleport punch attack of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

I miss many things about DA:O, but I must say I am enjoying DA2 a lot. 2011 has been a good year for RPG gaming so far.

I will write more about upcoming games, soon.

Just for the record, when using a comparative like 'nicer', 'more' is redundant.

As for DA2's combat, I found combat against normal enemies with fairly short health bars to be very satisfying particularly with Isabella and to a somewhat lesser degree with mages, but combat against enemies with long health bars just sapped the whole 'I'm so powerful' feeling right out of it.   Most boss fights took me upwards of half an hour on hard (on pc) and that's without counting reloads.  More tedious than tense.

While the combat in DA2 is better the overall experience is dumbed down by a bad campaign and a poorly told story.

Not to mention the achievement's/Trophies are fucked it's an all around disappointing game with better gameplay parts and interactions but worse as far as campaign. *sigh.

I'll say at this point, that to me Origins and DA2 are equally good. I think that i'll say, that all of what I don't like in Origins I find awesome in DA2, and what I feel are lacking in DA2 are present in Origins. I'll make it short and say, that all the actual interaction(character, controls, pace...) was much better in DA2, but what DA2 lacked, was the feel of being in a world; the game was simply too claustrophobic. Also, I think the plot in DA2 is interestingly made, each chapter having it's own "boss" and plot. But agreeing with Catolf, there's no point in Meredith. There's not even a real relation to her, you just kind of go "huh" when she's introduced.

@Veektarius:  Thanks for pointing out the grammatical error, will be more careful in future :)

Well I've been playing on normal and I feel battles are quite fare, apart from a few difficult ones (like facing the varterral and the duel). Haven't tried hard yet, so I can't comment on that.

@Catolf: Like I said, if you think of DA2 as a story totally (or mostly) unrelated to origins, you won't have a good reason to complain against it. It is like a side story within an epic tale. If you'd make a game on Harrowmont or Bhelen's childhood and make it DA2, it might have had a similar impact.

I do agree that the achievements are silly. I remember the utter satisfaction I got from getting the achievement for exploring all areas. It'd be difficult not to do that in DA2 considering the lack of unique locations!

@Flaboere: You just spoke my mind!

I hope there's better RPG's coming, I'm a first class Bioware fangirl but I already forgot DA2, way too bland, not enough Bio magic.

I'm so exhausted of talking about DA2 at this point .. most I can say is it's a fun game, dramatically inferior to Origins and is far from what I would of wanted from a sequel to Dragon Age, but non the less a really entertaining RPG.

@TaliciaDragonsong:  I am looking forward to Witcher 2 and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Hope these will be better than DA2.

@Abyssfull: Yes that's the point...it's not really a sequel. They could have named it something else.

I felt that DA:O had a better story and environments, but DA2 had better characters and combat. Both equally great games in their own right.
