I was given this question by my nephew a few weeks ago, "If you had a million dollars (his estimation of rich), what would you do with it?"
I turned teh question aroudn on him first, and he said he'd buy a car. He is ten years old, and I think a car is still something he wants to own but is out of his realm to own for what seems like many years.
I told him I would buy a lot of Legos, he's a kid, and that seemed fun to him. In reality, I though to myself I'd really probably be practical and buy a house. Then again, I really think my Lego's answer was sort of my dream use for money. I would just buy all the sets of Legos, buy hundreds of bins to sort the bricks, gears and parts into and then just build.
So what fun, impractical thing that woudl give you joy would you do with a million dollars? And, sure, give me you safe/practical answer too - car, house, pay off bills?
A Million Dollars - Not a lot, but what would you buy?
that's million bucks
seriously, I'd get a million tacos for a million dollars, to provide adequate substenance for the Dr who marathon.
I would buy the most expensive PC setup, and the latest Mercedes.
The rest I would put in my bank account, without benefit, and use it one day 20 years from now when something really bad happens.
See what I can get for a perpetuity and live on the interest.
Based on current prime and a conservative guess, I should make about 25-35 thousand dollars a year to do nothing.
that's million bucks
Whats that saying from? I remember seeing that and laughing my ass off.
With a million bucks I'd invest it to make more millions. I'm too old now and have had my wild partying days to do anything other than something practical. Until my midlife crisis which shouldn't be too far away.

The annoying thing about having a million bucks is that you can't afford to do any of the crazy shit only a rich person could do. if you buy a decent house, you've lost half of it. Then hire a private chef, that money will run out in a couple years.
@yummylee: I'm not sure if I should be mad that someone locked that thread or happy because it is now preserved in a pure state.

Thank you. I laughed again.
The fun thing to do, would be to go to the local Mercedenz-Benz dealer dressed like a complete bum and put in an order for a new S63 AMG and fill out the entire options list. Then I would spend the rest of the money on rubber, doing donuts all day long.
The responsible thing to do, would be to pay off my mortgage, my mom's mortgage, renovate her house, save some money and maybe withdraw like $500 extra each month.
What in the blazing fuck are you on?
If you divide 1,000,000 buckaroos by 25,000 (my current salary) I could:
A) live 40 years without working a day
B) do whatever I want for 40 years
C) live comfortably enough to rent a house and own a car (as I do now)
D) do whatever I want for 40 years
If I had a million dollars and I would play and make games sunrise to sunset. But literally I could do anything that isn't a stupid waste of money like "buy a yacht". Even if I spent 500,000k on a nice condo or a villa in Spain that's 20 years of income left. Probably I'd spend 500,000k staffing a company of my friends that just makes cool shit and go from there.
Not a lot!? Where the fuck are you from?
No kidding. I mean, if you own a billion dollars, it's not a lot, but to a peasant like me who only ever has two thousand dollars or less in my bank account, a million dollars sounds amazing.
These questions always come down to me thinking about how I'd feel about actually acquiring that amount of money, and it comes down to how I acquired it. If I won it, then I'd be super egalitarian with it; big donation to charity, pay back my parents for all they've done for me, pay off my sister's student loans, and save and invest so I could live comfortably in the future. If I had earned it, and was in a position to earn more money, then you start getting into more frivolous and personal uses; spend a year travelling the world in relative comfort, build a competitive Magic: The Gathering legacy deck, Mercedes S-Class, fund an independent film about my life etc. I think my real answer to the question lies somewhere between those two extremes.
I would just do the boring reasonable thing. Get a nice house and car and pay off bills to live comfortable while working at my job which i don't hate. For me that means i could save and use my everyday money on things i want without worrying about bills. Take a vocation for more petty things and not feel bad.
I would buy more money. like a subway franchise!
I like this, I would follow my dreams and become a sandwich artist.
Pay my way through school, spend a couple thousand on dumb novelty or luxury items (i.e. A neo-geo) and put the rest in the bank to buy a house at some point or whatever.
If I had a million dollars I would buy you a green dress, but not a real green dress cause that's cruel.
Fuuuuuuck.
@geraltitude: As I mentioned in mine, you could lock your million up in a perpetuity or savings bond, and probably make 25k a year off the interest. And then when you're tired of that, you can get your million back.
Pay off the mortgage, get a second bathroom for the house, buy a 58 Cadillac Sedan, invest half of what's left into something secure like oil, and use the other half to buy dumb needlessly powerful computer parts.
Edit: TOTALLY forgot to mention the kid's college fund, I'd probably put some into that!!

Yeah that's actually much smarter.
lol, I was thinking when I posted mine "Man so few of the people here must really work" and then I read your comment and thought "dammit, a real adult".
Pay off my student loans and credit card. Buy a modest house debt free. Invest the rest.
Also, 2 chicks at the same time. I figure that could be arranged for way less than a million dollars.
Pay off all my friend's student loans. I only have the one friend, so it wouldn't be too much. I'd give the rest to needy animals.
Pay of my Parents loans they have never been able to get down and buy myself a nice small house.
Bank the majority of it and live of the interest as well.
