I've been looking at Adult Swim programs for quite some time, and I feel like it's time for me to give some opinions. Some shows I love, with great passion, and some I see as utter stupidity. The current state of adult swim is a weird one, but a 50/50 one.

In my opinion, the best show Adult Swim ever had and most likely will ever have was Moral Orel. Personally, I believe that show is beautiful for what it did in the 3rd season. By no means were the first 2 slouches, because they were indeed hilarious, satirical, messed up, and well written. But man, the dark turn taken by the creators was a smart one. The fact that a lot of the episodes intertwine with one another really boom with reality in a natural way, with the fact that everyone, and I mean everyone, has their problems that they're hiding. Kind of like this American Beauty effect. I never thought I'd say such amazing things about a 15 minutes per episode claymation show. Honestly, it's underlying tones, amazing voice acting, animation, and writing, as well as deliciously dark drama and comedy make the show amazing. Moral Orel was a great change of pace from the other Adult Swim shows, and it's a shame it was cancelled. But it truly deserved a better home... alas, the show was cancelled, but ended with a heartwarming piece of art as it's finale. It's kind of funny, but ultimately, it's one of the most depressing shows I've ever seen, yet it's overall outcome is an amazing one. Just look at this scene below. The animation, raw emotion with the song, etc. Fucking beautiful. It's almost as if the show says, "Hey, this is sad, like a lot of life. You are watching this."

Another brilliant show Adult Swim had and occasionally shows is Home Movies, which is where the creators of Lucy the Daughter of the Devil (which is an awesome show in it's own right, with it's dark and satirical, anecdotal comedy) and Metaocalypse (amazing music, writing, voice work, and plot) worked together before they went separate ways. The improv like banter between the characters, played brilliantly by Brendan Small, H. Jon Benjamin, Sam Seder, freaking Louis C.K and Jonathan Katz, and et cetera was so natural and hilarious. The parodies, good laughs, and awesome story lines for every character, whether dramatic or comedic; all amazing memories and things to watch. Everything about this show just feels so normal and natural, which is why it's so damned charming.  It's kind of like a white version of The Boondocks, which is also an amazing show. The writing is genius, and every time I watch it, I feel special inside and like a huge impact has been made. It's a strong show that's hilarious and doesn't hold any punches, which is exactly why I respect it and love it.  Both shows are awesome, and really leave a big boot print in your heart of you bother watching.

Shows with a bit of random humor also strike a chord with me. Aqua Teen Hunger Force's old, smart and yet stupid comedy still has me in tears a lot. Most of the time, it has to do with the delivery, which is almost perfect in each episode from each character. Even though the show has taken a turn for the slightly worse, it still has a place in the hearts of many. Tim and Eric Awesome Show: Great Job! is a perfect example of smart and yes completely random and often retarded (sorry) humor. Something about the show is ridiculously addicting, regardless of how dumb it is. Non-sensical ideas, purposely bad editing, and overall funny acting and writing shows that Tim and Eric is... something special. The show is fucking retarded (sorry), but so good at being retarded, that you'll want to keep watching. It's stupidity, which is evoked with the help of some special guest actors (like Zach Galifinakis, Patton Oswalt, Will Forte, et cetera) and their general writing, is genius, if that makes any sense. For example, they got JOSH FREAKING GROBAN TO DO A SKIT. Watch the magic here [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cqtqxGigAQ]. I would like to show you a plethora of other skits, but this one stands out to me as the general brilliance of the show.  PS: I'd also like to give Venture Bros. some credit here... hilarious show, along with Frisky Dingo.

Ever since Tim and Eric Awesome Show: Great Job! and Robot Chicken came on, I feel that the general feel of all the new and original shows has been "be as random and stupid as possible." I don't understand the rationale there, because Tim and Eric are good at being random purposely, whereas shows like Xavier: Renegade Angel (which might have some layer of depth there, but it's practically invisible), Superjail! (sorry, pointless violence), Titan Maximum (funny, but gets nowhere, really), Squidbillies (*cough*), Robot Chicken (occasionally funny), and many others aren't good at. Even the winner of that Burger King pilot contest is freaking dumb, and falls under the category of random for the sake of being random. There was another pilot that actually seemed like it had some sort of story, and it was actually quite funny, and reminiscent of the Office UK, which is also showing on Adult Swim. But no, they went with Cheyenne Cinnamon and the Fantabulous Unicorn of Sugar Town Candy Fudge. I don't get it, is this some sort of new direction that adult swim is taking? Does this sell to a lot of you? If they want this, they should just get Tim and Eric some more air time, because that show is actually funny.

Some shows that are out there that seem like they'd be fit for Adult Swim, like Ugly Americans (from the Superjail guys), or Archer (starring H. Jon Benjamin). These shows are hilarious, and would fit perfectly on Adult Swim's circuit. Hell, they feel like they've been made for the channel... and yet why do they reside on Comedy Central and FX? Is it because it's not what Adult Swim is looking for? Maybe the creators wanted to cover more territory or even avoid working with Adult Swim for some reason. Who knows.  I mean what happened to the glory days of Sealab 2021, Space Ghost, The Brak Show, and Harvey freaking Birdman go? The humor in these shows was brilliant, even if it isn't in depth or whatever. At least it was funny and had a sense of entitlement and parody. I even loved Tom Goes to the Mayor (from Tim and Eric), Stroker and Hoop (irreverent and good, plain, old fashioned adult humor), and Assy McGee (*cough*.) I suppose the glory days are over.

A lot of the entertainment I get also comes from non-original shows like King of the Hill, early Family Guy episodes, Mission Hill, the Clerks cartoon, etc. I'm glad they got these shows, I even wish they got more (like Celebrity Deathmatch, Dr. Katz, et cetera.) There are also some shows that would work with their "Brit Block", like Spaced and Man Stroke Woman. My true wish though is that they would come up with some better stuff of their own. Of course, the channel is for adult humor, and there are tons of shows out there that have a spot waiting for them here, but maybe show a little effort. Who am I to judge, though? I just personally believe that they should maybe try and step up their game a little more.

What are your opinions on Adult Swim programs? Are you a fan of a lot of them? What are your favorites/least favorites? Any shows you think should be on Adult Swim?

DISCUSS!

EDIT: Special mention to the Boondocks (thanks @HypoZenophobia) A hilarious show that satirizes many things others would be afraid of, and manages to be ridiculously good at it. Sprinkle amazing writing that pulls no punches and is close to genius, and some deep themes, and you've got the Boondocks... also this strange anime-esque style animation... it's weird :P

The only thing i would disagree with you on is Tim and eric. They are a comedy vortex, where everything funny gets sucked away and all you have left are 2 retards making faces and sounds for 30 minutes. Its the worst show ive ever seen in my life and ive never gotten so much as a chuckle from those buffoons. ERIC IS IN A DRESS LIKE A LADY LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!! OH HE MADE A FART NOISE LOLOLOLOL!!! ugh, no thanks.

Aside from that adult swim has dropped in quality as of late, i still dont think the live action stuff works(CARTOON network) and i will forever say that any show that requires you to be high in order to laugh at it(12oz mouse, perfect hair forever,80% of the shows these days etc etc) is NOT funny.

Really the only shows i ever get excited about are metalaclypse(man thats a bitch to spell) robot chicken(not as good as it used to be but a laugh here and there)  and the best show adult swim has to date in my opinion, venture brothers. Currently all three of those shows arent  on air so its been awhile since ive even turned adult swim on, unless i wanna see family guy episodes for the 30th time.

I never really got around to watching the very late night shows.

The shows I really watched on Adult Swim are Futurama, Robot Chicken (back when it was good, or the Star Wars specials) and Titan Maximum (I like stop motion animation, but the show itself is gross).

Didn't they make the Robot Unicorn Attack flash game?

If so, they are epic.

Home Movies is a wickedly under-rated show.

H.Jon Benjamin is absolutely brilliant.

@Laharl: Those kinds of laughs I don't pull from Tim and Eric. Mainly it's from the completely and utterly pointless turns in a skit, stupid editing, hilariously and purposely bad acting, and some of their ideas are freaking genius. Much like 4chan.com/b/, every time i watch Tim and Eric, it's a gamble, for some times, i might not laugh. Also, Venture Bros. kicks. ass.

@Willy105:  I love stop motion, too. But the two stop motion shows still showing are an insult to the craft. Dino Stamatapolous' new show "Mary Shelly's Frankenhole" is also stop-motion in the same vein of their previous show Moral Orel, which looked freaking amazing by the 2nd season. They should grab Celebrity Deathmatch and start airing episodes of that. The clay-mation and stop-motion work out brilliantly! ... I assume it's stop motion... regardless, looks great.

@Yukoei:  They're game ideas are freaking great, but like their shows, they're just becoming more random and random
Radioactive Teddy Bear Zombies
Robot Unicorn Attack

hmm... actually they're quite funny

@ProfessorEss: I attempt to show everyone I know Home Movies. They always love it. Also, H. Jon Benjamin is a genius in everything he does. All the cartoons, and especially Archer. Awesome stuff... reminds me of Frisky Dingo

Well, not to pile on but I agree with some of the latter comments concerning Tim & Eric.  I don't find a single thing funny about it and it's gone on way too long.  Additionally, it opened the door for more live action stuff on the network which is the worst decision ever in my opinion.  Live action, whether its Adult Swim, moronic reality shows or the umpteenth run of Shark Boy and Lava Girl have no place on the Cartoon Network.  I am only partially willing to forgive in the case of the live Ben 10 movies because they came from a original CN show.

Five to 10 years ago when Adult Swim was showing stuff like Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sea Lab 2011 and fresh episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force it was "must-see" TV for me.  However, from what I understand, the people at the top switched around, the emphasis on quality was tossed out the door and cheap crap was the new focus of the network.  Honestly, the only thing I still watch on Adult Swim is Venture Brothers, Home Movies and Family Guy.  And less and less of the last one, too.

I'd trade the entire AS line up for a season of FX's Archer.  Luckily, I think there will be a season 2 of that and I am eagerly awaiting Comedy Centrals return of Futurama.  Adult Swim just isn't funny any more and (dare I say it) I wouldn't miss it if they canceled it like Toonami (which I do miss).

I do not know ANYONE who likes tim and eric. It seems like a project they fund them selves with money they got from another show.

@Everyones_A_Critic: I remember that... in the second season, everyone except for Steve-O died via decapitation... that was weird. It's a shame...

@PenguinDust: strong opinion haha. Agreed, it's gotten pretty bad... yet there are still some good-amazing shows out there, cancelled or not. We'll see what they do, but i'm getting closer to agreeing with you on the cancellation thing... but where will the good shows find a home?!

[Adult Swim] will always hold a special place in my heart as during my college days every night we would switch it over to watch Family Guy, Futurama, and whatever randomness came on afterwords. Since then I have become an avid fan of the Venture Brothers and Robot Chicken with most of the other things being real hit or miss. I'll agree that I think Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job is a disgusting and slightly retarded show that I derive no enjoyment from. I would classify the Mighty Boosh in the same vein but that's British humor and I can't say that I ever really understood that.

One of the things I look forward to most with Adult Swim is their April Fools Day gags. Well, this Thursday it's coming up so I'm waiting for them to dazzle me.

@CenturionCajun: actually, i delve in british humor and it's okay, the Mighty Boosh is pretty bad. They should grab Spaced and Man Stroke Woman before it's too late.  I hope they show the Room again this thursday... i have to thank Adult Swim for opening my eyes to one hell of a movie.

adult swim used to be great when it was almost all anime. When it was summertime my sister and i would watch it for as many hours as it was on. I would stay up super late to watch inuyasha, trigun, cowboy bebop, stardust memory, 8th ms team, yu yu hakusho, and lots of other really good stuff. But now that its all absurdist hipster humor (where people laugh even when there is nothing funny because they are afraid of being the guy who doesnt get it) i honestly hate it. Its just not as good.

@Supermarius: i was never into anime, but i did indeed watch most of the shows you mentioned when they were on. it's a shame that the turn taken by adult swim was for the worst. the boondocks is anime.. even though it's rarely shown anymore...

I don't think adult swim is a place for hipsters, though. They just have this new mindset of "If Tim and Eric 'worked', then we should make everything random! THEN THEY'LL LOVE US!" It's strange.

Cancel the god-awful George Lopez late night talk show and shove them into that time slot on TBS.  Space Ghost Coast to Coast began on TBS before moving to CN, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary.  Or just leave the good ones on CN but don't shoe-horn them into a block called Adult Swim.  I think one of the problems is the network feels they have to fill up the nightly block of programming with stuff so they find whatever they can that's cheap and like something else that might have been a mild hit.  AS runs from 10 pm to 6 am, so even airing shows twice during that time means they've got 4 hours to fill each night.  An hour of King of the Hill and an hour of Family Guy mean 2 more hours of tired and "absurdist" comedy to eat up the time.  I think they should dump the whole thing, broadcast the 2 or 3 remaining good shows on weekends only and move on.

Actually, for several years now [Adult Swim] has been treated as an entirely separate network to Cartoon Network. I wouldn't be shocked if at some point down the road they were spun off into a whole 'nother channel ala Boomerang. If you'll remember it used to only be from about 11 PM till 2 AM but has now spread out from 10 PM to about 5 AM.

For those of us who enjoy anime don't forget that Saturday nights now are completely anime. While I don't always get them that's a pretty hefty commitment to give them an entire weekend programming block.

I watched Perfect Hair Forever one new years, I couldn't stop laughing at the absurdity. To this day, the hot dog and tree remain an injoke within my collective circle.

I'm equally surprised there's no love for Boondocks in this thread. That was a great show.

@HypoXenophobia: Hey man, I've shown my respect and love for the Boondocks several times! (in the original post and a response to someone talking about anime) Brilliant writing and amazing stories and plots... llllllllove it. I don't even mind it's animation style. plus it's fucking hilarious

Those were brief references, not a lovesplooge like you gave everything else. Not harping just surprised there's so little mention of it.

" Actually, for several years now [Adult Swim] has been treated as an entirely separate network to Cartoon Network. "
I am loving the New fullmetal. I like how its much closer to the manga.

I only watch Adult Swim is on the weekend. Saturday for anime and Sunday for Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I think everything else they air is stupid.

The only thing on that network I ever got annoyed with was some anime, family guy re-runs, and thats about it. Morel Orel was okay, but it isn't a damn thing compared to ATHF or Sealab.

Best Show Ever on adult swim. Still watch some of season 1 every once in a while if I have to transfer thing on to my external drive and I see them.

I couldnt help but notice the 2 positive videos you linked for tim and eric were not of tim and eric but of other, funnier people. :)

Also yes Archer has been picked up for a second season and i think someone mentioned "the room" i highly recommend watching the rifftrax version. The movie itself is funny but the mst3k boys riffing on it makes it epic.

As always, I just about agree with all your points. We have similar tastes, duder!

However, I friggin' love Superjail because of how depraved and manic everything is. I love how there's something ridiculously violent going on in ever single scene of that show- the animation is actually very deep and layered, even if it looks grungy and cheap. The show itself manic and random, and it unfortunately rests the humor on the gratuitous violence, but the violence is so inherently ridiculous that it makes me laugh hard.

But hey we can't agree on everything, can we?

Adult Swim is pretty good, other than the weekends with shit like Moral Orel and Tim and Eric.

I wish they'd bring back Shin Chan...

I think The Tim and Eric Show is terrible. I'm sure there were better shows out there that [adult swim] could have picked up. I know we all have our different tastes, but every time I've seen a skit I always ask "are you fucking kidding me".
I've never laughed at Moral Orel or King of the Hill, I've actually fell asleep watching the latter.
The Boondocks, ATHF, Sealab, Superjail, Home Movies, Shin-Chan, and Family Guy are pretty good IMO.

I usually sleep, so I don't normally watch the shows after 12:30, because I do enjoy Family Guy and Robot Chicken. D:

@SJSchmidt93: Shin Chan should've never gone away man... though I'll disagree with you on Moral Orel being shit. That show has a lot of depth and drama that can't be found in any of the other shows... it probably would've been better on like HBO or something. Tim and Eric is 30% awesome and 70% shit XD

@Axxol: I don't think Tim and Eric necessarily needed to get picked up, because with their last [as] show Tom Goes to the Mayor, they basically gained the key to [as] broadcasting rights. and indeed, we do have different tastes :P It's strange because king of the hill would've been perfectly fine as a live action show, but after a while, i feel that it wouldn't of been the same; it wouldn't have the same charm. I don't blame you on not laughing at Moral Orel, because the humor comes with a certain taste and after a while they stopped going for comedy and just wanted to tell you their stories, regardless of how sad they are.

@damnboyadvance: i wish i could sleep that early all the time :O

The lack of Venture Brothers discussion in this thread is extremely disappointing. In my opinion it's the best thing on TV, not just AS.
