So I've decided to get my girlfriend a tablet for Christmas. We are both college students so I figured that would be a good substitute instead of carrying around a laptop. I was hoping to get some suggestions from you guys about tablets, more specially tablets that aren't IPads. Obviously the main thing it will be used for is college so papers, notes, PowerPoint etc. I've been searchin myself but I have little to no knowledge on what is good and what's a piece of shit. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks duders.

This pretty much summed it up for me.

The Nexus 7 ($200 from Google) has been pretty awesome lately. I really like it on plane rides, and it looks great. I like to use it read, but not to write. I guess that would be better with a bluetooth keyboard, but I prefer my laptop for writing, anyways.

I've got a Kindle Fire and while it is far from perfect it suits my needs really well. Mostly as a video player, I download videos at home (either directly download or transfer from my PC) and watch them at work. The rest of it is decent... or usable anyway. I modded mine to run cyanogenmod so it basically looks and acts like a Nexus 7.

That said, get a Nexus 7.

I'd go with what the others are saying and vote for the Nexus 7. I got my 32 Gig version last week and I love it.

I recommend the Nexus 7. It was that or the Kindle Fire HD for me, I went with Nexus since it can just use a kindle app for books and have the benefits of being outside of the Amazon ecosystem.

@Sackmanjones the three things you named are what tablets suck at.

@Devil240Z: It still isn't cool... or have the iPad armies not invaded your area of the country?

I picked up a Nexus 7 a few months ago. Love it. Best bang for your buck IMO.

I will say though if you're planning on using it for notes or writing papers etc. it's probably not your best choice. You can plug in a keyboard using an OTG cable or Bluetooth but it's probably not ideal. You'd be better off getting an affordable laptop.

If you're set on a tablet though, definitely Nexus 7.

I would rather have a laptop (which is why I got one) for college than a tablet but that's your choice I guess. If you want a cheap, great tablet then the Nexus 7 is the way to go.

If you are going to be doing a lot of typing and don't want to shell out for a bluetooth keyboard, the Nexus 7 supports wired keyboards and mice with an OTG cable.

I don't even fool with my Kindle or Nook, but I need to. Too bad I don't like to read! Video games have taken care of that.

I have a Nexus 7 and it is friggin dope. I recommend the microsoft wedge keyboard to go along with it. Using the dust shield as a stand in class and typing notes is great. Also, PLUG IN THAT XBOX CONTROLLER AND PLAY YOUR GAMES!

Get the Nexus 7, throw down 20 bucks for a small bluetooth keyboard and another 25 for the Poetic Slimline Case. Get one of several pretty good Office Suite apps off the Play Market and you should be set to jet at half the price of an ipad.

Jesus, why have I not heard much about the Nexus 7 until now?

But really OP, if you're going to be taking notes in class and using a word processor/powerpoint, I'd recommend a cheap laptop over a tablet.
