I've recently started working on my next big project to add to my portfolio; it's a creature from http://designstudiopress.comamazing book 'Alien Race' and the concept was done by Thom Tenery.

I haven't got a scanner so I had to make do with taking a photo of the page the concept is on:

I've currently just finished (I hope) the base mesh to bring into Zbrush, I was planning on waiting until I'd finished the creature before adding all the harnesses and such.

@Harkat: I'll definitely rig and pose him but I'm not sure about full-on animation as that's not a strong-suit of mine - I might, however give the rigged final product to an animator to let him have some fun with it.

Should you not model him in his natural stance? I'd adjust the legs to how it is in the concept. Also, the arms are a touch too long. 
 
Looks cool, I'm interested to see how you do with this guy!

@Akrid: Honestly I wasn't sure how to pose his basemesh, my experience with modelling creatures is very little. I assumed since the best pose for humans is with legs straight and separated and arms slightly bent that it would go the same for creatures too but that was the entirety of my logic. Part of my posting this before sculpting was to get advice from all angles, so you think I should adjust the legs to fit the concept initially? I'll go do that then (and shrink the arms!)

@Robosaur: I'm not an expert on this, but I'm pretty sure you want the base mesh to be in it's natural, default pose. Otherwise you'll immediately run into trouble when you try and move those legs. Think about what kind of range of movement you want out of them and model accordingly. For instance, you'd probably want the leg to be able to go flush to the body.  You'll also want to figure out how this creature could conceivably walk - because it can't as it is. You'll either have to change the design slightly or fudge it somehow. 
 
Anyway, none of that matters too much since you're just posing it. Just things to consider. More important then that stuff right now: having a proper center of gravity will help immensely when you get to sculpting. You can't establish a proper idea of how the creature acts and moves and weighs with its legs in the wrong position. If they are, you're simply sculpting the surface and not the form of the creature.
 
Also, a dogs hind leg will be excellent reference for the legs on this creature; I think that's what the original artist borrowed from.
