Am I the only one who thinks "The Hurt Locker" is a little overrated? I mean don't get me wrong, it's a great movie and it helps give the average citizen a glimpse at what our soldiers are currently going through in Iraq and Afghanistan but come on! I mean it's good but it's not 6 academy awards and best movie of the decade good .
Seriously films like Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Casualties of war, Gettysburg, Gods and Generals, We were Soldiers, and Hamburger Hill were all far better movies than "The Hurt Locker". Am I missing something? Is The Hurt Locker only so critically acclaimed because it's the first decent Iraq War theatrical film we currently have, or am I just a guy with bad taste in war films.

It was a good film that was topical; it also had strong performances and tried to transcend being a "war" film by taking you into the psyche of one specific soldier. I mean, the whole "I JUST CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT WAR BECAUSE I'M USED TO IT!" thing has been done to death, but it was a well made, albeit tedious to watch, take on it.
Also, the other best picture nominees were weak aside from An Education. I assume there was a lot of Avatar resentment among the voters.
" @JB16: It was a good film that was topical... "This.
I think what made it stand out to the academy, and to many other people, is that it took a story told many times and applied it to our current generation of soldiers. It was interesting, to me, to see just how different the conflict over there is from wars past; and to see the kinds of challenges that a soldier is faced with, coming home in this era of cynicism.
Plus, the acting was pretty friggin' good all around.
" Its overrated but I think Avatar is as well. I think Up should of one. Why are we talking about this now this was months ago. "Well I just watched the movie again to see if I'd like it more the second time and while I do say it's definitely good ( I loved the sniper scene), it's still not great when compared to past war movies.
I was really surprised to find out that it was a complete mess narrative-wise. I didn't get attached to any of the characters and it was hard to follow the plot because of the huge cuts in between the scenes. Action scenes were pretty good though. There was a lot of tension and the effects were realistic. Also I'm wery confused about the topical thing. Weren't there any other movies about modern warfare before? And there was a pretty successful mini-series Generation Kill not a while back... I don't know. I'm not American so I guess I'm not supposed to get it.

"There were a few other Iraq war adaptations to film, Over there, Redacted, Lions for lambs, green zone, but none of these adaptations have done well. Over There lasted for 1 season before it was canceled, and the movies bombed in the box office. Generation Kill was phenomenal but even that only did "ok" when it comes to how many people watched it when it aired. The Iraq war is really unpopular in America so they usually dont do well for that reason.
The Hurt Locker is the first successful Iraq War movie that has came out so far.
The film did very little for me. Its a good film, but its entirely overrated and some of the scenes trying to be "realistic" was actually pretty unrealistic. The sniper scene was stupid since the insurgents could one shot every British mercenary in the team without missing but the Marines couldn't do jackshit with their .50 cal sniper rifle with missing a few times. Then there was the time where the EOD team of three men decides to split up and go check out the dark alleyways on their own. I wouldn't mind nearly as much if this was more of a action film, but since it tried to portray the daily life of a soldier then this makes no sense.
Oh and the characters were completely un-attachable for me.
It's the best movie I personally have seen in quite a long time. I like it many times over more than all those movies you listed. :P
I think any time a movie wins a lot of awards it is immediately considered overrated by most.
It was a good movie, worth seeing, and recommendable for others to watch. I don't think I'd count a movie overrated unless I wouldn't recommend it to others, since rating is far too subjective and incredibly relative. Don't complain about the good movies getting good press, save it for movies that you genuinely dislike.
I liked it, but I was honestly shocked to hear how much praise it got. It's good, but not as amazing as most people make it out to be.
Wonderful CHARACTER movie. Doesn't feel so much like a war movie that it's often compared to. And it's only really the protagonist that's greatly interesting. Whereas traditional war movie usually has at least two or three really good characters. *shrug* It doesn't feel like a standard war movie to me at all, but more a single character drama with great depth. I dunno, at my most cynical I think it was just a weak year for standard old school Hollywood flare. I'd say something about Avatar and comparison of greatness, but haha I still haven't seen it.
I watched it and thought it was a good b movie, than I looked it up and saw it won last year for best picture...
It was better then all the other Oscar nominees except for two, District 9 and Inglorious Basterds. Personally I liked the movie a lot but it was not Kathryn Bigelow's best work because that would be Point Break.
I thought it was kinda crappy, the whole idea of a rebel in the military is dumb, this was the Rambo of 2009 without the cheesy action that made rambo awesome. Also why the hell is a bomb specialist with no sniper training(or very little) a better sniper then the sniper that brought the rifle in the first place?
ugh, complaining about the realism of the hurt locker is like complaining about the medical verity of frankenstein
Some people would say The Hurt Locker is one of the best war movies ever made.
BAM MOTHERFUCKERS!
