I liked Madoka and all but I think people who herald it as some deep dark deconstruction of the magical girl genre have not watched a lot of magical girl shows

sailor moon, the first season ends by everyone getting killed except Usagi

(also the best part of Madoka is the music and the art that isn't the character designs)

Girlfriend (Kari) 1-2

Description: A TV anime adaptation of the Girlfriend (Kari) a mobile game where players can have girlfriends through playing the game.

Sighh..... You know, I can't sleep and with a description like that how can i not watch it right i mean it's a game!!!! It's actually not what you expect, it's all girls with no Main Dude to be the Harlem King. There are some some lesbian undertones though but there are not "it's def happening". Actually was not terrible. Ep2 was all about main heroine putting on too much weight, yup.

If you have insomnia and have literally nothing better to do, perfect time to watch this.

The giant bomb wiki is missing the game though, i guessi'm gonna have to fix that.

@gaspower: nope havent watched any of the fate series.i dont think madoka magica is good,i thought aldnoah zero was ok,psycho pass was probably the only thing he did that i thought was great.so take what i just said and combine it with the fact i dont think the fate series looks to interesting(i was way more interested in madoka magicka because of the hype)is why i havent seen it.since i watch all anime atleast once i will have to see it at some point, but i dont have high expectations since ive learned what most people say are amazing end up being horrible.

@nasp: Fate Zero was adapted by a different anime studio (ufotable) than the ones that came before that (DEEN) and Zero is the series that Gen was heavily involved in since he also wrote the light novels. Animation and dialogue/story-wise, its done a lot better than the older Fate Stay Night adaptation and the tone is very different (Zero gets pretty dark). I think if you liked Psycho Pass (as I really liked Psycho Pass but have not watched Madoka Magica), give Fate Zero a shot.

@gaspower: k like i said i have to watch every anime once, but hearing this makes me a little more excited to see it.one question though, can i just watch fate zero and say screw fate stay night?

Avatar image for gaspower

@nasp: As someone who went through watching all 24 fucking episodes of Fate Stay Night and the somewhat better Unlimited Blade Works movie, YES you can DEFINITELY skip the old Fate Stay Night anime (and movie as well since the current Ufotable remake covers the same Unlimited Blade works route). :)

Fate Zero is a prequel anyway so its set 10 years prior to Fate Stay Night. The only benefit of having watched the older FSN anime is having certain information already known and what happens at the end but Gen did a great job being able to tie it back to Fate Stay Night even though its not his original project Apparently, he's also good friends with the developers, Type-Moon, who made the visual novel FSN was based on.

Looking back on FSN (DEEN) it doesn't hold up as well for many reason, art style, character development, pacing, CG dragon. Zero and Unlimited blade works are looking to put together all the strong parts of the series into place.

Alright, fuck it. I'm done. I tried...I really fuckin tried, but Photokano might just be the most boring thing I have ever watched. I finished episode 6 and I'm throwing in the towel.

I've read some reviews and seen people call it vile, disgusting, creepy, desperate, and any number of other adjectives, but I say fuck all that. Above anything else, it's frustratingly boring. I'm not even sure who it's for either.

Wanna see cute anime girls? Fucking watch almost any other series these days. Wanna see cute anime girls in sexy poses? Watch any series thats even remotely identified as ecchi and you'll get more panty shots and boob grabs in one episode than Photokano has in it's entirety. It's not a good slice of life because no one in the show has a fucking life. It's never funny so it can't be a comedy. There's plenty of romance I guess, but "effort" is not a word I would ever use to describe what went into writing it. And that's if you can actually call it writing and not what it is which was someone taking a shit on a piece of paper and calling it a goddamn script. The characters are so incredibly barebones it's virtually impossible to hate and/or love them. Their designs are so boring, I was convinced two different girls were the same character until one scene had them in the same room together.

Shit, the only remotely unique thing about this series is the photography aspect and, aside from everyone occasionally reminding the main character he has a fucking camera, even that's arguably barely present as far as I can tell.

No one should ever watch this because literally anything else you could possibly ever do with your time is more worthwhile than sitting through this. I give it a fuckyou/10.

Fuck.

Also I saw the 1st episode of Wolf Girl & Black Prince as well and like with every other new anime this season, I'm holding off on watching it until there's more episodes (:D)... so I'm gonna watch Photokano instead and experience it myself. 0_o

A smattering of thoughts on whats going on in my Anime world. I'm watching more than these, but these are the ones that stand out right now

  • If Fate/Stay Unlimited Blade Works keeps up this quality, it will easily be one of if the the best anime I've even seen. Animation quality alone is jaw dropping. Its got me playing the VN right now. (New episodes Saturdays)
  • I've also started to watch Mirai Nikki and School Days, and they're fucking something else. Can't recommend either of them honestly, but they certainly are off the wall and I'm enjoying them for the most part.
  • Log Horizon 2 is pretty good even with the studio swap, the quality of animation did take a hit it seems. (Saturdays)
  • I joked that my dad should watch Elfien Lied sarcastically because its basically a bad porno and now it was halfway watched on our shared Hulu. I feel bad for the introduction considering Elfien Lied is a terrible intro.
  • Akame Ga Kill is fantastic and another of my all time favorites. Its solely responsible for my reading of manga now (Sundays)
  • Akatsuki no Yona is ok I guess. Seems like it has room to grow at least. Might be worth a shot its (Tuesdays)
  • Sword Art Online is going strongish. Still hasn't topped the first half of season 1, but much better than the fairy stuff. Excited for the new season because of where the Light novel goes.
  • TRINITY SEVEN is a harem ass harem show so far, if thats your thing it seems pretty good. I'll keep watching it to get over the lack of good shows during Summer season (Tuesdays)
  • Aldnoah Zero is fantastic. It's on break right now and comes back early next year. Go watch it, its got cool mechs and is my favorite mech anime since Valverave and Majestic Prince.
  • Aldnoah spoilers: Fuck you Slaine

I took some sick days this week so I decided to go through Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. I have to admit I chuckled more than a few times even though I'm totally not into the genre being satirized. I thought a lot about it was rather adorable, which is not a turn of phrase I often use to describe things I like. I was rooting for the main character by the end though she deserves better. Art wise I couldn't help but feel like I was being tricked by the animators. I mean look at those bows in her hair! They're almost hypnotic. Not sure that I'd recommend this series to super casual people but I enjoyed it as someone who has seen my fair share of comics and cartoons.

That led me into checking out the start of Bakuman. I'm finding it somewhat interesting though the tone is kind of all over the place. One minute it's a slice of life sort of deal, then it's a romance thing, then sometimes it throws in some slapstick. I like the referential stuff involving Shueisha and the creative process, it's just that the characters and pacing have yet to grab me.

ok i watched the rest of log horizon in one sitting(around 20 episodes)and i have to say that it surprised me.i thought it was ok at first then there were 4 or 5 episodes there that were just boring to me.however around the halfway part the show starts to throw alot of political stuff in and instantly i was hooked.there are two problems i have with the show that made it not good enough for my top 10 list of all time though.one was that some of the comedy in this show is just facepalm bad, that doesnt happen much for me.there is two jokes they use in this show OVER AND OVER,even up to the final episode where they just HAD to do it one more time.the other problem was the 4 or 5 episodes that i thoght didnt do anything interesting and bored me.besides that i really enjoyed the show and i think that the second season has the potential to bring it to the next level.

I'm a massive fan of Shinichirō Watanabe, and Cowboy bebop is probably the coolest anime I have seen. Which is probably a little sad and obvious, as I chose the name of the lead character as my username. Anyways, I got talked into watching Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostro, Which if your a fan of the bebop, I think you would really enjoy. The show looks a little bit dated, as I think it was made in the 60's. However the film is really cool.

Here's a little clip for you. :)

@frostyryan: Bayonetta is pretty much a run-down of what plot there was in the first game. Akira was/is a classic anime, especially for those of us who watched the stuff back when you could only get it through VHS tapes. Don't know how it's been adjusted for bluray though.

In other news, Parasyte is weiiiiiird, yet considering we're entering Halloween, quite timely.

@bigjeffrey: Oh Twin-tails is also pretty ridiculous though it reminds me more of Sabagebu and Samurai Flamenco (but less weird). Kokkuri-san reminds me a lot of Barakamon because of the whole "(ghost) grown-up with kid" dynamic and the light hearted tone so it hits me right in the "solar plexus of good feelings". I don't know why but since last year I've been a sucker for well done comedy shows and slice-of-life shows (such as Gin no Saji). :D

Man, I don't know if anybody's pointed it out, but after hearing it over and over Barakamon's opening theme just kinda got stuck to my head. Here's the music video of the whole song. Look at that hair, the facial expressions, those skinny jeans!!!

I actually started watching this awhile back and kinda stopped around the City of the Dead arc IIRC. I actually like the underlying themes that its tackling in regards to the current state of the world and how the characters are coping/surviving in it as well as the conflicts that arise from ideological differences. It's really interesting and deeper than I thought coming into it initially. I haven't finished it though so those are just my impressions from what I've watched so far.
